[An alternative to postmenopausal Hormone Replacement Therapy? Selective Estrogens Receptors Modulators (SERMs)].

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) represents the first and probably sole therapeutically approach for prevention and treatment of medical postmenopausal disease. Nevertheless, the adverse effects and the risks HRT associated, suggested, to clinical and pharmaceutical research new pharmacological treatment options. Actually a group of compounds, SERMs (Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators), allows a large interest. These pharmacological agents, due to their estrogen agonist/antagonist properties, are able to bind Estrogen Receptors in female target tissues (bone, brain, heart, etc) with different actions; so, by these properties, SERMs represent actually a possible alternative to HRT.

Characterization of a canine parvovirus strain isolated from an adult dog.

A CPV-2b strain was detected from an adult vaccinated dog, affected with severe gastroenteritis. The faeces of the dog were positive to canine parvovirus by a hemagglutination assay and gave a CPV-2b-like pattern by a hemagglutination inhibition test using monoclonal antibodies. In vitro-cultivation of the virus was difficult and after a few passages on canine and feline cells, the presence of the virus was detectable only by an immunofluorescence assay on the feline cells, since hemagglutinating activity had disappeared. Characterization of the virus, by an indirect immunofluorescence assay with monoclonal antibodies, confirmed the antigenic CPV-2b-like pattern of the nonhemagglutinating virus.

[Magnetic resonance (MR) in endometrial carcinoma preoperative evaluation].

BACKGROUND: Myometrial invasion of endometrial carcinoma is an important prognostic factor because the degree of myometrial invasion is correlated with the rate of lymphnode metastases and of recurrences. The aim of the study was a preoperative evaluation of endometrial carcinoma by Magnetic Resonance (MR). METHODS: The authors present a prospective study performed on 54 cases of endometrial carcinoma collected at the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the University of Trieste (Italy). All the patients were considered as Stage I after hysteroscopy and endocervical curettage. Prior to surgery all the patients underwent MR at the Department of Radiology of the University of Trieste (Italy) in order to evaluate the depth of myometrial invasion. The surgical procedure included total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and pelvic and lomboaortic lymphadenectomy in high risk cases. Statistical evaluation was performed by Fischer's exact test. RESULTS: Statistically significant positive correlation was found (p<0.001) between MR staging and surgical staging. The sensitivity reported in our series for distinguishing between superficial disease (Stage IA and IB) and deep myometrial invasion (Stage IC) was 92%. CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative MR is helpful in selecting patients at high risk of nodal involvement and it is suggested that, although MR is considered an expensive examination, its use should be always considered before surgical treatment of patients with high surgical risk.

M gene evolution of canine coronavirus in naturally infected dogs.

Two stray pups (A and B), three and five months old, respectively, both naturally infected with canine coronavirus (CCoV), were studied for 180 days. The virus was detected intermittently in the pups' faeces by PCR for periods of 156 and 146 days, respectively. Sequence analysis of a fragment of the gene encoding the M protein revealed that the viruses detected at the onset of the infection were very similar to typical strains of CCoV, whereas from 42 days after infection in pup A and 40 days after infection in pup B the viruses had nucleotide and amino acid mutations resembling sequences in feline coronavirus.
