Search for the decay KL --> pi(0)e+e-.

We report on a search for the decay KL-->pi(0)e+e- carried out by the KTeV/E799 experiment at Fermilab. This decay is expected to have a significant CP violating contribution and the measurement of its branching ratio could support the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa mechanism for CP violation or could point to new physics. Two events were observed in the 1997 data with an expected background of 1.06+/-0.41 events, and we set an upper limit B(KL-->pi(0)e+e-)<5.1 x 10(-10) at the 90% confidence level.

Optimization of quartz tube pyrolysis atmospheric pressure ionization mass spectrometry for the generation of bacterial biomarkers.

Experimental procedures were investigated to improve the efflux of biomolecule pyrolyzates from quartz tube pyrolysis under atmospheric pressure ionization mass spectrometry conditions. Heating regimes, airflows, and ion focusing parameters were optimized to increase the informative mass spectral signals generated from the pyrolysis of Gram-positive bacterial spores and vegetative cells. Dipicolinic acid (DPA) is found in 5-15% by weight in Gram-positive Bacillus spores, and the parameter optimization procedures provided an intense mass spectral signature of the m/z 168 protonated DPA molecule with a minimization of pyrolytic and ionization fragments. Moreover, mass spectral information from the optimization protocols yielded peaks and mass patterns characteristic of DNA and RNA nitrogen bases, protein diketopiperazines, and amino sugars.

Extrinsic allergic alveolitis from a proteolytic enzyme.

BACKGROUND: Subtilisins are proteolytic enzymes of bacterial origin found in detergents. They are high-molecular-weight antigens and have been implicated in allergic rhinitis and asthma. OBJECTIVE: This report describes a case of extrinsic allergic alveolitis due to subtilisins in a liquid cleaner. METHODS: Clinical, radiologic, and serologic information were used to make the diagnosis. CASE REPORT: A 53-year-old woman developed respiratory symptoms while working with a cleaner containing subtilisins. Her symptoms intensified in the work environment and improved away from work. A computed tomography scan demonstrated alveolar and interstitial infiltrates with subsequent scarring. A pulmonary function study revealed a restrictive pattern with diminished diffusion capacity. Bronchoalveolar lavage showed lymphocytosis and all cultures were negative. Precipitating antibodies to the enzyme were found in the patient's serum. Her symptoms improved once she changed her occupation. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of the patient's clinical history, physical, laboratory, and radiologic findings support the diagnosis of extrinsic allergic alveolitis from the enzyme contained in the cleaner.

K5.76Ga5.76Si10.24O32.3.4H2O, a gallosilicate with the zeolite gismondine topology.

The title compound, K-GaSi-GIS, potassium gallium silicon oxide hydrate, was synthesized hydrothermally and its crystal structure was determined from data collected on a single crystal of dimensions 10 x 10 x 8 microm at a synchrotron X-ray source. The compound, which has the aluminosilicate (AlSi) zeolite gismondine (GIS) topology, Ca(4)[Al(8)Si(8)O(32)].16H(2)O, crystallizes in the tetragonal space group I4(1)/a. A disordered distribution of the framework Si/Ga sites leads to higher symmetry of the GIS-type network compared with the usual monoclinic symmetry in AlSi-GIS. Framework Ga substitution for Al in AlSi-GIS leads to substantial distortion of the crankshaft chains, reducing the effective pore dimensions and suggesting the possibility of pore-dimension control via partial framework-cation substitution.

Impact of allergic rhinitis treatment on quality of life.

Allergic rhinitis is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the nasal passages. It affects approximately 20% of the population, is a significant health and economic burden, and severely impairs quality of life. Two main instruments, Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form health survey (SF-36) and Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (RQLQ) have been used to assess quality of life in patients with allergic rhinitis. Antihistamines, corticosteroids, anticholinergic agents, decongestants, cromoglycates, and immunotherapy are used to treat patients with allergic rhinitis. Of these, antihistamines and intranasal corticosteroids are the most efficacious and frequently utilised medications. Studies have demonstrated improvements in quality of life with both of these medications in patients with allergic rhinitis.

Bupropion hydrochloride induced serum sickness-like reaction.

BACKGROUND: Bupropion hydrochloride is used frequently in the treatment of depression and in smoking cessation therapy. METHODS: We report a case of bupropion hydrochloride induced serum sickness-like reaction. RESULTS: There was complete resolution of symptoms on discontinuing bupropion and instituting therapy with prednisone and antihistamines. CONCLUSION: This case is seemingly the first report of a serum sickness-like reaction to bupropion hydrochloride.

Synthesis and opioid activity of novel tetrapeptides analogous to sequence (1-4) of dermorphin.

Seven new tetrapeptides analogous to (1-4) sequence of dermorphin were synthesized and evaluated for their opioid activity. The peptides were synthesized by the solution phase method. Their opioid activity revealed that peptides II and V were the most potent in the analgesia test as well as in the peripheral assays. Peptide II was most active in the guinea pig ileum assay, whereas peptide VI was 2763 times more selective for mu-receptors.

Blockade of the antinociceptive activity of centrally administered ketorolac by nor-binaltorphimine.

Antinociceptive activity of intracerebroventricularly administered ketorolac tromethamine was evaluated in mice by measuring inhibition of abdominal stretching induced by p-phenylquinone. Ketorolac tromethamine produced dose-dependent antinociception with an ED50 of 7.34 micrograms/mouse (4.97-10.82) and a maximal effect at 30 micrograms. Selective antagonists of opioid receptors were used to determine ketorolac's mechanism of action. The ketorolac tromethamine-induced antinociception was not blocked by the mu- and delta-opioid receptor antagonists, naloxone and ICI-174,864 (N,N-diallyl-Tyr-Aib-Aib-Phe-Leu), respectively; however, the kappa-opioid receptor antagonist nor-binaltorphimine dihydrochloride significantly blocked this effect. These findings suggest that activation of kappa-opioid receptors appears to play a role in the mechanism of the antinociceptive effect of ketorolac tromethamine. Ketorolac tromethamine may induce the release of endogenous kappa-opioids to produce central nervous system antinociception.

A comparison of intravenous ranitidine and omeprazole on gastric volume and pH in women undergoing emergency caesarean section.

We have compared the effect of intravenously administered omeprazole and ranitidine on gastric contents in a double-blind study in 80 consecutive women undergoing emergency Caesarean section. When the decision to perform emergency Caesarean section was made, patients were randomly assigned to receive either ranitidine 50 mg or omeprazole 40 mg intravenously. The volume and pH of the gastric contents were measured immediately after tracheal intubation and again before extubation. The gastric pH was found to be higher after omeprazole than after ranitidine immediately after intubation (5.89 +/- 1.46 and 5.21 +/- 1.36 respectively) (P < 0.05) and before extubation (5.97 +/- 1.38 and 5.32 +/- 1.24 respectively) (P < 0.05). However, the gastric volumes were comparable in both the groups. The number of patients with gastric volume > 25 ml and pH < 2.5 were 3 (7.5%) in the ranitidine group and 1 (2.5%) in the omeprazole group after intubation and none in either of the groups before extubation. We conclude that omeprazole 40 mg iv administered at the time of the decision to operate, results in higher gastric pH than ranitidine in obstetric patients undergoing emergency Caesarean section.
