[Anesthesia and central nervous system in carotid surgery].

The Authors, in the debate concerning the most appropriate anesthesiologic treatment in thromboendarterectomy surgery, relate their experience using three different types of general anaesthesia under electroencephalographic monitoring. The results are commented correlating data with some physiopathologic considerations. Carotid surgery, in particular the operation of thromboendarterectomy (TEA), during the last few years has assumed features and frequency typical of a routine procedure. Nevertheless, if from a surgical point of view the criteria of choice of the patients and the surgical techniques have been well standardized, in the anesthesiologic field the discussion between the supporters of the locoregional anaesthesia on one side and of the general anaesthesia on the other side is still open. By this report we mean to bring a contribution to the debate correlating our anesthesiologic files with some physiopathologic notations on the theme.

[Reflex therapy in respiratory allergy].

The immune system and factors probably involved in respiratory allergies in certain subjects examined. Subjects were grouped according to age and sex and treated using both conventional methods, specific acupuncture and a placebo. The statistically evaluated results give an encouraging insight into the application of acupuncture within this delicate and complex field of human pathology.

Acupuncture Therapy↗

[The effect of various drugs on post-operative pain-producing sensations].

The influence of diazepam, the hemisuccinic ester of oxazepam, fentanyl and pentazocine on pain-producing sensation after surgery was tested in 160 patients subjected to ordinary and major surgery. Use was made of Dundee and Moore's modification of Clutton-Brock's test, and Bromage's test. Analysis of the results indicated that the slow administration of analgesics and psychoactive drugs enables better results to be achieved, with smaller amounts of active substance.

Drug Therapy, Combination↗

[Glucagon and renal function in arterial hypotension (experimental study)].

The effects of glucagon on the renal function of dogs in posthaemorrhagic hypotension has been investigated. A significant improvement in renal emunctory function was noted after administration (with physiological solution vehicle) of glucagon under these conditions. Following these encouraging results, findings have been transferred to clinical practice.
