Depression in a sample of Turkish type 2 diabetes patients.

Forty-one depressive and 57 nondepressive patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM, type 2) were compared for demographic and clinical variables. The depressive patients were more likely to have a history of depression than non-depressive patients. The female patients were more likely to have depression than males. Results suggest that depression in NIDDM was only associated with female gender and previous depressive episodes.

The effects of Azone and capsaicin on the permeation of naproxen through human skin.

The permeation of naproxen through excised human skin and isolated perfused rabbit ear skin has been determined. It was found that both Azone and capsaicin enhanced the permeation with an enhancement ratio of up to 4-fold. The magnitudes of the effect were similar in human and rabbit skin. The permeation of naproxen from a saturated solution of the drug through skin pre-treated with Azone was similar to that from a commercial preparation (Naprosyn). In the perfused rabbit ear experiments the presence of capsaicin had no effect on the vasodilatation of the blood vessels, inferring that the penetration enhancement was a direct result of capsaicin influencing the barrier function of the skin. Structural similarities between Azone and capsaicin were seen using molecular graphics.

Peroxidative damage in sickle-cell erythrocyte ghosts: protective effect of allopurinol.

1. Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels of erythrocyte membranes of sickle-cell disease patients were measured as an indicator of peroxidative damage and allopurinol was used as a lipid peroxide scavenger. 2. Incubating sickle-cell erythrocytes with allopurinol significantly reduced MDA levels of erythrocyte membranes compared with before-treatment values. 3. Allopurinol seems to reduce the peroxidative damage in sickle-cell erythrocytes, but the mechanism is still unknown.

Lipoprotein levels in patients with pregnancy induced hypertension.

The purpose of this prospective study was to investigate the levels of Lp(a), Apo(a), VLDL, LDL and HDL in 23 patients with pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) and in 20 control. The Mann-Whitney U tests was used for comparisons between the two groups. Serum Lp(a) and Apo(a) levels were significantly raise in the PIH group (p < 0.05 and p < 0.05 respectively) and no significant correlations could be demonstrated for other lipoproteins.

Multiple biliary papillomatosis.

Diffuse biliary papillomatosis is a rare bile duct tumour. We report a case of multiple biliary papillomatosis treated surgically with a transhepatic stent. Diffuse biliary papillomatosis involving intra and extrahepatic bile ducts is extremely rare. It is regarded as having low grade malignant potential. In this report a case of diffuse biliary papillomatosis with obstructive jaundice is presented.
