[Lipid peroxidation following ultraviolet irradiation of the blood and the protective action of tocopherol acetate (experimental research)].

Original experimental data are reported on processes occurring in the blood after UV irradiation. A study of the content of primary and secondary products of lipid peroxidation, vitamin E and the resistance of erythrocytes to hemolysis, catalase activity before and after UV irradiation of animals of different age groups revealed that UV irradiation of the blood changes not only the intensity of the process of lipid peroxidation but also the direction of metabolism of unsaturated fatty acids in the blood cells, exchange of semiproducts between them and the plasma, but also weakens the antioxidant systems of the blood. These processes are age-dependent. Preliminary administration of vitamin E preparations secures a high antioxidant homeostasis in the blood, especially after UV irradiation.

Aging

[The role of fat-soluble vitamins A and E in preventing the biological effects of ionizing radiation in rat tissues].

The lipid peroxidation level and the antioxidant system status have been studied by the amount of alpha-tocopherol and the antioxidant activity of homogenates in the brain, liver, heart and somatic muscle of rats given Vitamins A and E, as physiological additives, before and after gamma-irradiation. It has been shown that a new dynamic balance between the parameters under study is rapidly set up after irradiation, which represents a mechanism of rapid adaptation. The radioprotective effect of alpha-tocopherol is more pronounced than that of Vitamin A (particularly in the brain). In most cases, Vitamin A produces, upon irradiation, an unfavourable effect on antioxidative homeostasis.

Animals

[Redistribution of alimentary vitamin E in tissues of irradiated rats].

The data are presented in this paper concerning the content of lipopigments, vitamin E and malondialdehyde (MDA) in the brain and liver of rats. Excess vitamin E delivered with food was shown to be bound in tissues into complex with MDA. It is suggested that it is a labile form that reserves vitamin E. Irradiation of rats caused impairment of these complex and release of vitamin E, as well as a decrease in the lipopigment fluorescence and increase in the MDA content.

Animals

[Age-related characteristics of triglyceride, secondary lipid peroxidation products and alpha-tocopherol levels in the tissues of female rats].

The content of triglycerides, secondary lipid peroxidation products and alpha-tocopherol closely related by complex functional interactions has been studied in the blood plasma, erythrocytes, liver and brain of rat females of all the age groups. The results obtained confirm an essential difference of vitamin E content in the tissues of rat females as against that in tissues of males. It may be a result of susceptibility of these parameters to endocrinic effects and of a particular functional role of alpha-tocopherol in females.

Animals

[Age-related features of tocopherol vitamer content in the heart and liver of rats of different ages in health and in ischemia of these organs in vitro].

The experiments on the heat and liver of 1-, 3-, 12- and 24-month-old rats were conducted to study the effect of ischemia for 1 h on the content of tocopherol vitamers in these tissues. The parameters under study were shown to reliably decrease in all the cases. In the liver the content of all the tocopherol vitamers decreased most rapidly in 1-month-old rats. In the heart the most rapid decrease in the content of vitamers was observed in 3-month-old rats. The results observed permit estimating contribution of certain vitamers to remedy injuries caused by ischemia.

Aging

[The adaptational changes in lipid peroxidation under the chronic action of an electrostatic field].

Experiments on young puberal Wistar rats have shown that chronic effect of the electrostatic field brings lipid peroxidation (LPO) to a new level of the dynamic equilibrium. Metabolism of lipids proved to be sensitive to this factor. But the systems regulating LPO actively holds a new equilibrium state. Inert LPO products of the lipopigments type can bind vitamin E whose content in tissues remains unchanged.

Adaptation, Physiological

[Effect of alimentary factors on the production of primary and final products of lipid peroxidation].

In blood plasma, liver, and brain of pubertal female Wistar line rats the level of diene conjugates, fluorescent lipopigments and vitamin E were studied as a function of different diets: control, fish and fish with addition of vitamin E. The obtained results show that in the brain tissue the role of vitamin E as an antioxidant is more pronounced, but dynamical equilibrium between the oxidation substrates and antioxidants after alimentary deficiency of vitamin E is restored in the nervous tissue more slowly than in the liver and blood plasma. In the organism of young animals fluorescent pigments are not accumulated in form of inert products, but behave as normal metabolites.

Animal Feed

[Radiation-induced lipid peroxidation, a fish diet and modulation of the effects by vitamin E].

Data are presented in this paper on the effect of vitamin E on rats given a fish diet after whole-body gamma-irradiation. The content of lipid peroxidation products in rat plasma, brain and liver and also the content of vitamin E have been investigated. Irradiation increases lipid peroxidation in the studied tissues and decreases vitamin E content. This process is aggravated by the fish diet. Vitamin E given in addition to fish diet helps the organism to stabilize the antioxidant homeostasis at a qualitatively different level.

Animals

[Effect of chronic effect of the electrostatic field on various biochemical indicators of the tissues].

The action of electrostatic field (320 kV/m) on the adaptability has been studied in experiments on young Wistar rats (females). Some parameters of carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism, and the process of lipid peroxidation were observed in blood serum, liver and brain. Glucose content was observed to increase in all the tissues, liver glycogen, cholesterol/phospholipid ratio. The urea and malondialdehyde increased in the liver and brain. The experiments have shown that the physiological adaptability is high.

Animals

[Characteristics of the composition of fluorescent lipopigments of the liver and brain in rats of various ages].

Spectral characteristics of the lipid liver and brain extracts were studied in experiments on rats of different age (1, 3, 12, 24 months). The aim of the experiments was to study age peculiarities of the lipopigments composition by means of thin-layer and liquid chromatography. Different fractions of lipids which differ in spectral absorption and fluorescence were extracted. Proceeding from the results obtained certain conclusions may be derived: the processes of structural recombination of the whole lipid constituents are accompanied by the age accumulation of lipofuscin; the process of accumulation of lipofuscin is not monotonous and has pronounced age peculiarities; the formation of the lipid-pigment complex is tissue-specific.

Age Factors

[Correlation of the calculated content of vitamins C, B1, B2 in the diet of school children and students of trade schools and the actual content of them at various times of the year].

The calculated and factual content of vitamins C, B1, B2 in dietary of schoolchildren and students of trade schools were studied in spring, summer, autumn and winter. The schoolchildren aged 11-13 years, and the students of trade schools aged 14-17 years were included into the study. To calculate the content of vitamins in raw materials and dishes, the normative technical documents and tables of chemical composition of food products were used. Factual content of vitamins in ready products was determined by the methods recommended by the Institute of Nutrition, Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR. It has been found that in all seasons of the year it provides an average supply with vitamins C 67-8%, B1 65-36%, B2 64-29% of a day's requirement.
