Experimental clinical study of the effect of millimeter waves on microbial and inflammatory renal diseases.

An investigation is made of the effect of low-intensity millimeter waves on the development of acute and chronic pyelonephritis. It is shown that the application of millimeter waves diminishes the rate of pyelonephritis recurrence and reduces the probability of chronic pyelonephritis. Furthermore, these waves normalize lipid peroxidation, stimulate antioxidant protection, and improve blood rheology. Experimental investigations performed on animals provided evidence for the positive effect of millimeter waves on the morphofunctional state of organs and tissues as well as on blood circulation. This especially concerns pyelonephritis of mycoplasmic etiology.

[Changes in immune status in patients with infectious endocarditis in surgical treatment involving artificial blood circulation].

In 98.2% patients with infectious endocarditis, admitted to the hospital for surgical treatment, the moderate immune deficiency state is revealed with the cell link of immunity depression and phagocytic function of neutrophils insufficiency, which become aggravated after operative intervention performance, especially using artificial blood circulation. The cell link of immunity depression, the B-lymphocytes function inhibition are preserved during 6 months after the operation.

[Susceptibility to antimicrobial drugs of strains of bacilli used as a basis for various probiotics].

Five strains of the genus Bacillus used as components of biological preparations i.e. bacterin SL, biosporin, bactisubtil and subalin were tested for their susceptibility to 38 antimicrobial agents, The strains were simultaneously resistant to 5 antibiotics: astreonam, colistin, penicillin, ceftizoxime and cefuroxime. High susceptibility of the strains to some penicillins, cephalosporins and aminoglycosides was recorded. The gene engineered strain B. subtilis 2335(105) marked by the kanamycin resistance gene showed cross resistance to amikacin and tobramycin. Trimetoprim, sulfotrimetoprim and norfloxacin proved to be active against the strains.

[Problem of pathogenesis of Mycoplasma infection].

It has been shown that irrespective of the primary focus of affliction, M. hominis-induced infection should be regarded as a systemic disease characterized by an immune-mediated inflammation which is contributed to by blood kallikrein-kinin system activation resulting in changes in the coagulative system and fibrinolysis until disseminated intravascular coagulation develops. This allows one to interpret in a new fashion the etiology of some diseases proceeding with signs of vasculitis.

[Effect of interferon on the course of experimental E coli-induced pyelonephritis].

The effect of the type I interferon on the development and process of experimental pyelonephritis caused by E. coli was studied on mice weighing 12 to 14 g. Interferon was administered intraperitoneally in a dose of 1000 units on days 3 and 7 of the disease. It was shown that the administration of the type I interferon to the mice with experimental pyelonephritis promoted rapid elimination of bacteria from the kidneys, prevented their penetration to the contralateral (intact) kidney, prevented marked macro- and microscopic damages in the kidneys, lowered the intensity of the inflammatory reaction, and increased the phagocytic activity of neutrophils and the number of the E-rosette-forming lymphocytes in the thymus. The data provided experimental grounding for clinical trials of interferon preparations in treatment of bacterial pyelonephritis.

[Drug sensitivity of Candida in patients with kidney diseases receiving immunosuppressive therapy].

It was shown that prednisolone and its combination with azathioprine++ increased contamination of the patients with yeast-like fungi and promoted development of candidiasis in them to a greater extent than cyclophosphamide. In the patients treated with the immunodepressants there was observed a carrier state in regard to various yeast-like fungi: 12 species belonging to 6 genera were isolated from the pathological materials. Determination of sensitivity to antifungal drugs in 200 Candida strains revealed that amphotericin B was the most active agent. Then followed mycoheptin, nystatin and nitroxolin. Levorin was the least active drug. The MICs of the drugs for the majority of the cultures were 0.5, 4-8, 8-16 and 32-64 micrograms/ml respectively. Candida resistant strains (mainly to levorin and mycoheptin) were isolated only from recipients of kidney transplants during the early postoperative period when the patients were subjected to intensive immunodepressive and prophylactic antifungal therapy. Among the fungi of the Candida genus C. guillermondii and C. parapsilosis proved to be the most resistant. Under the hospital conditions and in vitro studies it was found that cyclophosphamide and combinations of prednisolone with cytostatics increased resistance of Candida to the antifungal drugs. Rapid increasing of the fungi resistance to levorin and mycoheptin was observed. The increase in the resistance to amphotericin B was somewhat lower and that to nitroxolin and nystatin was extremely low. The study of the combined effect of the immunodepressants and antifungal drugs demonstrated that the immunodepressants increased the antifungal activity of amphotericin B, levorin and nitroxolin.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Interferon in the modulation of the immune response in pyelonephritis caused by Staphylococci and Pseudomonas aeruginosa].

In experiments on mice the influence of mouse serum interferon, type I, on immune response in pyelonephritis caused by staphylococci and P. aeruginosa has been studied. The immunomodulating action of interferon and its therapeutic effectiveness have been shown to depend on the etiology of the disease. When injected intraperitoneally in a dose of 1,000 ED, interferon produces a pronounced therapeutic effect in pyelonephritis caused by P. aeruginosa and no effect in pyelonephritis of staphylococcal etiology. Type I interferon introduced in the dose used in this investigation has no influence on the killer activity of spleen lymphocytes, enhances the activity of the complement and the production of antibodies, produces a leukopenic effect and, depending on the etiology of pyelonephritis, exerts influence on the activity of dehydrogenases, the number of EAC- and E-rosette-forming cells, the oxidation metabolism of neutrophils and their phagocytic activity.
