Alcoholic extract of pericarp showed significant protection against FeSO4 induced lipid peroxidation, as compared with whole native nut and seeds. Mechanism of action may be through metal chelation or activation of endogenous antioxidant enzymes, because the extract did not show hydroxyl and super oxide anion scavenging property. Further in vitro experiments against FeSO4, it did not maintain the level of reduced glutathione.
Antibiotic susceptibility testing against 17 antibiotics was done on 96 strains of various species of coagulase negative staphylococci by Stokes method. Hundred per cent sensitivity was found against vancomycin and cefotaxime and about 90 per cent against ciprofloxacin, clavulanate potentiated amoxycillin, cloxacillin and clindamycin. Strains showed highest resistance against cotrimoxazole (77.08%) and tetracycline (64.59%). Clavulanate potentiated amoxycillin was found to be highly active against penicillin, ampicillin and amoxycillin resistant organisms. The results highlight the importance of antibiotic resistance typing among coagulase negative staphylococci species which are increasingly being reported from serious clinical infections making empiric therapy and selection of antibiotics difficult in these infections.
The possibility that corticosteroids influence lung maturation was suggested in 1968 by Buckingham et al. and supported by studies mounted in humans and in rabbits by Liggins and Howie and by a collaborative study from the N.I.H. To our knowledge no reverse process, i.e. the regulation of adrenal function by the lung, has been postulated. In attempting to isolate ACTH from fetal lung we found peptides which depressed corticosterone production. Eventually, we isolated a group of peptides from rabbit fetal lung which showed potent inhibition of corticosterone production in rat adrenal cell suspensions. Using high-resolution reverse-phase HPLC and high-sensitivity gas-phase sequencing techniques the primary structure of one of these peptides has been determined and it was called corticostatin. The adult rabbit lung contains a large quantity of a very similar peptide, which elutes close to corticostatin but whose amino acid composition differs by a single glycine and possibly a serine. This peptide is also potently corticostatic. We have isolated homologous human peptides but these show no apparent corticostatic activity in rat adrenal cell suspensions. They do, however, show interesting effects on in vitro growth of lung cell lines.
We have combined the push-pull perfusion of radiolabelled peptide, with reverse phase--HPLC procedures as a valuable method for monitoring peptide metabolism in the CNS. This model not only permits studies on metabolism of neuropeptides at specific sites in the CNS, but more importantly, allows (unlike in vitro methods) the study to be made under the appropriate physiological conditions. We have demonstrated unambiguously for the first time, the metabolism of CCK-8 in situ.
