Acromioclavicular dislocations; open reduction with screw fixation.

Athletes with complete separation of the acromioclavicular joint were uniformly restored to full athletic competence by an operation consisting of direct repair of the involved ligamentous structures with temporary fixation by a metallic lag screw approximating the clavicle to the coracoid. The metallic fixation was left in place an average of eight weeks and the screw was then removed under local anesthesia. A number of professional and collegiate football players returned to the rigors of football with no discomfort or disability.

Surgical treatment of bunions; distal metatarsal osteotomy.

The operation of Hawkins, Mitchell and Hedrick for the correction of metatarsus primus varus, bunion, and hallux valgus provides an eminently satisfactory solution both functionally and cosmetically. The procedure is applicable to any degree of deformity. Gratifying results were obtained in 43 operations on 25 patients.

Treatment of difficult and involved Colles' fractures.

Of 105 cases of Colles' fracture, 86 were treated by closed reduction and plaster immobilization alone; 19 cases in which the fractures were more severe were treated by fixed skeletal traction using an external skeletal traction splint. Despite the greater severity of the lesions, the end results, both anatomic and functional, were generally better in those cases in which skeletal traction was used than in those treated by closed reduction.
