Novel [2]catenane structures introducing communication between transition metal centers via pi...pi interactions.

[2]Catenane systems containing copper(II) and nickel(II) as metal centers have been self-assembled using tetraazamacrocyclic complexes and benzo-24-crown-8 as building blocks. A variety of methods, including X-ray crystallography, ESI mass spectrometry, (13)C and (1)H NMR, and electrochemistry, were applied to characterize these new face-to-face bismacrocyclic systems. Weak pi...pi interactions introduced by interlocking transition metal complexes with benzocrown moieties were shown to increase the communication (cooperativity) of metal centers. Introduction of the benzocrown increases the stability of the mixed valence state of the macrocyclic complex, which is reflected in high values of conproportionation constants. Moreover, this effect was found to be stronger than that obtained by shortening the length of the spacer between the two tetraazamacrocyclic subunits in the parent bismacrocycles. The extent of communication is larger for the nickel catenane than for the copper one.

[Retinal detachment in the eyes with retinopathy of prematurity].

In the period of 1983-1988 among 57 retinal detachments in children and youth in 8 cases (10 eyes) the authors found the retinopathy of prematurity as a cause of retinal detachment. The characteristic picture of changes in these eyes was discussed. Combined surgical procedures were performed in 7 cases achieving a cure in 6. Emphasized was the significance of periodical examinations of these eyes with the aim of eventual prophylaxis of retinal detachment and of therapy of amblyopia.

[Hamartoma of the optic disc in a 17-year old boy].

BACKGROUND: Hamartoma of the optic disc is a rare disease but a very important one for differential diagnosis with choroidal melanoma. METHODS: A case of a boy, 17, referred to the clinic with suspicion of intrabulbar tumor is presented. Basing on the clinical picture ultrasonography and fluorescein angiography studies, diagnosis of retinal and pigment epithelium hamartoma of the optic disc was established. Laser treatment was applied. RESULTS: During 4-year follow-up visual acuity and ophthalmoscopic picture of the lesion has not deteriorated.

[Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous--diagnosis and differentiation].

PURPOSE: Presentation of the cases with a rare form of persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 5 children, aged 3-14, were referred to the clinic with suspicion of neoplasm changes or congenital anomalies of the eyeball. Unilateral, pathological lesions, in the form of opaque membranes, partially or totally covered the optic disc, were found. In 2 cases persistent fragments of arteria hyaloidea were also observed. Diagnosis was mode basing on three mirror glass examination, ultrasonography and fluorescein angiography. In differential diagnosis, retinoblastoma and other entities determined in the literature as pseudo-retinoblastoma were taken into account. The children remained under clinical follow-up.
