Performance of individual fibers in a submerged hollow fiber bundle.

Hollow fiber membranes are popular as they have a high specific membrane area. To take advantage of this, it is necessary to pack the fibers into closely packed bundles. The fibers in different positions in the bundle behave differently as they are exposed to different hydrodynamic conditions. In this paper, a 'model' bundle of 9 fibers was tested in a setup which provides flow measurement from individual fibers and the same suction pressure in each fiber. The parameters studied were packing density, cross flow velocity, feed concentration and bubbling. It was found that a low cross flow velocities, high pressures and high feed concentrations, the surrounded (center) fiber performed very poorly compared to the fibers at the corner and the sides. Under these conditions, the overall performance of the bundle was much worse that of a single fiber.

Association between a functional polymorphism in the serotonin transporter gene and diarrhoea predominant irritable bowel syndrome in women.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Serotonin (5-hydroxtryptamine, 5-HT) is an important factor in gut function, playing key roles in intestinal peristalsis and secretion, and in sensory signalling in the brain-gut axis. Removal from its sites of action is mediated by a specific protein called the serotonin reuptake transporter (SERT or 5-HTT). Polymorphisms in the promoter region of the SERT gene have effects on transcriptional activity, resulting in altered 5-HT reuptake efficiency. It has been speculated that such functional polymorphisms may underlie disturbance in gut function in individuals suffering with disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The aim of this study was to assess the potential association between SERT polymorphisms and the diarrhoea predominant IBS (dIBS) phenotype. SUBJECTS: A total of 194 North American Caucasian female dIBS patients and 448 female Caucasian controls were subjected to genotyping. METHODS: Leucocyte DNA of all subjects was analysed by polymerase chain reaction based technologies for nine SERT polymorphisms, including the insertion/deletion polymorphism in the promoter (SERT-P) and the variable tandem repeat in intron 2. Statistical analysis was performed to assess association of any SERT polymorphism allele with the dIBS phenotype. RESULTS: A strong genotypic association was observed between the SERT-P deletion/deletion genotype and the dIBS phenotype (p = 3.07x10(-5); n = 194). None of the other polymorphisms analysed was significantly associated with the presence of disease. CONCLUSIONS: Significant association was observed between dIBS and the SERT-P deletion/deletion genotype, suggesting that the serotonin transporter is a potential candidate gene for dIBS in women.

Helical CT imaging of clinically suspected appendicitis: correlation of CT and histological findings.

PURPOSE: The diagnosis of appendicitis is traditionally made on the basis of clinical findings supported by laboratory results. The aim of our study was to determine the accuracy and feasibility of using a relatively new technique of computed tomography (CT) using only colonic contrast medium. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 50 patients clinically diagnosed as having appendicitis were prospectively examined before surgery with thin-collimation helical CT from the L3 level to the acetabular roof with only rectally administered colon contrast medium. The hard copy CT images were reviewed jointly by two radiologists and a consensus was reached for each patient. The results were then compared with the surgical and histological findings at appendicectomy. RESULTS: There were 35 true-positives, one false-positive, 12 true-negatives and two false-negatives for CT. This yielded an accuracy of 94%, sensitivity of 95%, specificity of 92%, positive predictive value of 97% and negative predictive value of 86%. The appendix was identified in 45 patients (90%) and obscured by an inflammatory mass in the remaining five. An alternative diagnosis was found in 10 of 12 normal CT examinations (83%). CONCLUSION: Helical CT with rectal contrast medium is a quick, well tolerated and accurate test to diagnose appendicitis. It can offer alternative, possibly non-surgical diagnosis in patients who would otherwise have undergone laparotomy.

Breast abscess as the initial presentation of squamous cell carcinoma of the breast.

Breast abscesses are common and rarely harbour an underlying malignancy. Antibiotics and drainage by aspiration are the mainstays of treatment. We encountered two post-menopausal patients aged 48 and 70 who presented with acute breast abscesses that had an underlying squamous cell carcinoma of the breast. Infective aetiology was considered in each case and pre-operative diagnosis is possible but requires a high level of suspicion to avoid a delay in diagnosis. Aspirate from the abscess should be sent for both culture and cytology and if drainage is done, then biopsy of the abscess cavity is essential. Clinicians should be aware of the association of this rare primary neoplasm of the breast.

Coincident signalling between the Gi/Go-coupled delta-opioid receptor and the Gq-coupled m3 muscarinic receptor at the level of intracellular free calcium in SH-SY5Y cells.

In SH-SY5Y cells, activation of delta-opioid receptors with [D-Pen(2,5)]-enkephalin (DPDPE; 1 microM) did not alter the intracellular free Ca(2+) concentration [Ca(2+)](i). However, when DPDPE was applied during concomitant Gq-coupled m3 muscarinic receptor stimulation by carbachol or oxotremorine-M, it produced an elevation of [Ca(2+)](i). The DPDPE-evoked increase in [Ca(2+)](i) was abolished when the carbachol-sensitive intracellular Ca(2+) store was emptied. There was a marked difference between the concentration-response relationship for the elevation of [Ca(2+)](i) by carbachol (EC(50) 13 microM, Hill slope 1) and the concentration-response relationship for carbachol's permissive action in revealing the delta-opioid receptor-mediated elevation of [Ca(2+)] (EC(50) 0.7 mM; Hill slope 1.8). Sequestration of free G protein beta gamma dimers by transient transfection of cells with a beta gamma binding protein (residues 495-689 of the C terminal tail of G protein-coupled receptor kinase 2) reduced the ability of delta opioid receptor activation to elevate [Ca(2+)](i). However, DPDPE did not elevate either basal or oxotremorine-M-evoked inositol phosphate production indicating that delta-opioid receptor activation did not stimulate phospholipase C. Furthermore, delta-opioid receptor activation did not result in the reversal of muscarinic receptor desensitization, membrane hyperpolarization or stimulation of sphingosine kinase. There was no coincident signalling between the delta-opioid receptor and the lysophosphatidic acid receptor which couples to elevation of [Ca(2+)](i) in SH-SY5Y cells by a PLC-independent mechanism. In SH-SY5Y cells the coincident signalling between the endogenously expressed delta-opioid and m3 muscarinic receptors appears to occur in the receptor activation-Ca(2+) release signalling pathway at a step after the activation of phospholipase C.

The gag domains required for avian retroviral RNA encapsidation determined by using two independent assays.

The Rous sarcoma virus (RSV) Gag precursor polyprotein is the only viral protein which is necessary for specific packaging of genomic RNA. To map domains within Gag which are important for packaging, we constructed a series of Gag mutations in conjunction with a protease (PR) active-site point mutation in a full-length viral construct. We found that deletion of either the matrix (MA), the capsid (CA), or the protease (PR) domain did not abrogate packaging, although the MA domain is likely to be required for proper assembly. A previously characterized deletion of both Cys-His motifs in RSV nucleocapsid protein (NC) reduced both the efficiency of particle release and specific RNA packaging by 6- to 10-fold, consistent with previous observations that the NC Cys-His motifs played a role in assembly and RNA packaging. Most strikingly, when amino acid changes at Arg 549 and 551 immediately downstream of the distal NC Cys-His box were made, RNA packaging was reduced by more than 25-fold with no defect in particle release, demonstrating the importance of this basic amino acid region in packaging. We also used the yeast three-hybrid system to study avian retroviral RNA-Gag interactions. Using this assay, we found that the interactions of the minimal packaging region (Mpsi) with Gag are of high affinity and specificity. Using a number of Mpsi and Gag mutants, we have found a clear correlation between a reporter gene activation in a yeast three-hybrid binding system and an in vivo packaging assay. Our results showed that the binding assay provides a rapid genetic assay of both RNA and protein components for specific encapsidation.

Focused abdominal sonography for trauma (FAST).

This study aims to examine the feasibility of applying the focused ultrasound examination (FAST) in the initial assessment of the trauma patient. Its advantage over diagnostic peritoneal lavage lies in the speed in which it can be performed, its non-invasiveness and repeatability. Over the period January 1997 to July 1998, the FAST examination (Acuson 128XP/10, 3.5 MHz probe) was used to assess the presence of haemopericardium or haemoperitoneum in 38 multi-trauma patients admitted to the Singapore General Hospital. The sample comprises mainly males (82%) with a mean age of 34 years (range 17 to 77 years). The mechanism of injury was predominantly blunt (95%). Mean Injury Severity Score (ISS) was 22. Eleven patients presented in shock and 16 patients had abdominal tenderness on examination. A single surgeon did the examination, which was performed during the secondary survey phase of resuscitation. Time taken for the FAST examination averaged 2.3 +/- 1.3 minutes. The results of the examination were compared to diagnostic peritoneal lavage, CT scan, operative findings, serial examination and/or post-mortem findings. Overall sensitivity was 67% and specificity 97%. Although the FAST examination missed the small amount of free fluid seen in the CT scan of 2 patients, these patients did not have to undergo laparotomy as their abdominal examination was normal. We conclude that the FAST examination is feasible and should be part of a general surgeon's armamentarium in the initial assessment of trauma.

A study of force and cross-sectional area of adductor pollicis muscle in female hip fracture patients.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the extent of muscle weakness in older female hip fracture patients compared with healthy older and young women; to determine the extent to which this weakness is caused by a decline of the force produced per unit area of muscle rather than by a decline in muscle bulk; and to investigate the mechanism of the decline in force per unit area. DESIGN: This was an open study of three groups of subjects, two age matched older groups and one young group. SETTING: University College London, Royal Free Hospital, and St. Thomas's Hospital, London. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-nine older female hip fracture patients (mean age 85.6 +/- 0.9 SEM), 18 healthy older women (mean age 84.7 +/- 1.2 SEM), and 43 young women (mean age 28.9 +/- 1.2 SEM). MEASUREMENTS: Adductor pollicis muscle maximum voluntary force (MVF) during isometric and pliometric contractions and cross-sectional area (CSA), body weight, height, and demi-span. RESULTS: Isometric MVF was lowest in the hip fracture group. In both older groups, isometric MVF and CSA were lower than in the young women. Only part of this weakness in the older groups could be explained by the smaller CSAs. The isometric force per unit area (MVF/CSA) was also lower in both older groups, the hip fracture patients again having the lowest values. Analysis of variance showed a significant difference between groups. The age-related declines in pliometric force were much less than the declines in isometric force. This resulted in an increase in the pliometric/isometric force ratio both for the hip fracture patients and for the healthy older women compared with that for young women. CONCLUSION: In comparison with the results from young women, the adductor pollicis muscles of female hip fracture patients were even weaker than those of healthy older women when normalized for muscle size. This decline in isometric MVF/CSA accounted for at least half of the overall weakness in the hip fracture patients. Inasmuch as pliometric force is maintained in situations where weakness is caused by a decline in the force produced per muscle cross-bridge, this is the likely mechanism of the declines in isometric MVF/CSA observed in this study.

A minimal avian retroviral packaging sequence has a complex structure.

We have defined a 160-nucleotide region, Mpsi, from the 5' leader region of the Rous sarcoma virus genome that is sufficient to direct the packaging of a heterologous RNA. Mpsi contains the putative O3 stem structure that has previously been shown, and that has been confirmed in this study, to be important for the efficient packaging of avian leukosis-sarcoma virus RNA. Analyses of several O3 stem mutants revealed that other regions within Mpsi can interfere with the proper folding of altered sequences which are predicted to form a wild-type O3 stem.

Neuropeptide Y Y2 receptor and somatostatin sst2 receptor coupling to mobilization of intracellular calcium in SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells.

1. In this study we have investigated neuropeptide Y (NPY) and somatostatin (SRIF) receptor-mediated elevation of intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) in the human neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY5Y. 2. The Ca(2+)-sensitive dye fura 2 was used to measure [Ca2+]i in confluent monolayers of SH-SY5Y cells. Neither NPY (30-100 nM) nor SRIF (100 nM) elevated [Ca2+]i when applied alone. However, when either NPY (300 pM-1 microM) or SRIF (300 pM-1 microM) was applied in the presence of the cholinoceptor agonist carbachol (1 microM or 100 microM) they evoked an elevation of [Ca2+]i above that caused by carbachol alone. 3. The elevation of [Ca2+]i by NPY was independent of the concentration of carbachol. In the presence of 1 microM or 100 microM carbachol NPY elevated [Ca2+]i with a pEC50 of 7.80 and 7.86 respectively. 4. In the presence of 1 microM carbachol the NPY Y2 selective agonist peptide YY(3-36) (PYY(3-36)) elevated [Ca2+]i with a pEC50 of 7.94, the NPY Y1 selective agonist [Leu31, Pro34]-NPY also elevated [Ca2+]i when applied in the presence of carbachol, but only at concentrations > 300 nM. The rank order of potency, PYY(3-36) > or = NPY > > [Leu31, Pro34]-NPY indicates that an NPY Y2-like receptor is involved in the elevation of [Ca2+]i. 5. In the presence of 1 microM carbachol, SRIF elevated [Ca2+]i with a pEC50 of 8.24. The sst2 receptor-preferring analogue BIM-23027 (c[N-Me-Ala-Tyr-D-Trp-Lys-Abu-Phe]) elevated [Ca2+]i with a pEC50 of 8.63, and the sst5-receptor preferring analogue L-362855 (c[Aha-Phe-Trp-D-Trp-Lys-Thr-Phe]) elevated [Ca2+]i with a pEC50 of approximately 6.1. Application of the sst3 receptor-preferring analogue BIM-23056 (D-Phe-Phe-Tyr-D-Trp-Lys-Val-Phe-D-Nal-NH2, 1 microM) to SH-SY5Y cells in the presence of carbachol neither elevated [Ca2+]i nor affected the elevations of [Ca2+]i caused by a subsequent coapplication of SRIF. The rank order of potency, BIM-23026 > or = SRIF > > L-362855 > > > BIM-23026 suggests that an sst2-like receptor is involved in the elevation of [Ca2+]i. 6. Block of carbachol activation of muscarinic receptors with atropine (1 microM) abolished the elevation of [Ca2+]i by the SRIF and NPY. 7. Muscarinic receptor activation, not a rise in [Ca2+]i, was required to reveal the NPY or SRIF response. The Ca2+ channel activator maitotoxin (2 ng ml-1) also elevated [Ca2+]i but subsequent application of either NPY or SRIF in the presence of maitotoxin caused no further changes in [Ca2+]i. 8. The elevations of [Ca2+]i by NPY and SRIF were abolished by pretreatment of the cells with pertussis toxin (200 ng-ml-1, 16 h). This treatment did not significantly affect the response of the cells to carbachol. 9. NPY and SRIF appeared to elevate [Ca2+]i by mobilizing Ca2+ from intracellular stores. Both NPY and SRIF continued to elevate [Ca2+]i when applied in nominally Ca(2+)-free external buffer. Thapsigargin (100 nM), an agent which discharges intracellular Ca2+ stores, also blocked the NPY and SRIF elevations of [Ca2+]i. 10. Delta-Opioid receptor agonists applied in the presence of carbachol also elevate [Ca2+]i in SH-SY5Y cells. When NPY (30 nM) or SRIF (100 nM) was applied together with a maximally effective concentration of the delta-opioid receptor agonist DPDPE ([D-Pen2,5]-enkephalin) (1 microM), the resulting elevations of [Ca2+]i were not greater than those caused by application of DPDPE alone. 11. Thus, in SH-SY5Y cells, NPY and SRIF can mobilize Ca2+ from intracellular stores via activation of NPY Y2 and sst2-like receptors, respectively. Neither NPY nor SRIF elevated [Ca2+]i when applied alone. The requirements for the elevations of [Ca2+]i by NPY and SRIF are the same as those for delta- and mu-opioid receptor and nociceptin receptor mobilization of [Ca2+]i in SH-SY5Y cells.

Predictors of fetal mortality in pregnant trauma patients.

BACKGROUND: Fetal mortality after trauma is significant. This study was aimed at identifying factors responsible for this high fetal mortality. METHODS: All pregnant trauma patients admitted to the two major Toronto trauma institutions during the period of November of 1991 to February of 1996 with an Injury Severity Score (ISS) > or = 12 were assessed. Data on age, gestation, hypotension, ISS, hemoglobin, blood transfusion, length of stay, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and specific maternal injury were analyzed retrospectively to determine predictors of fetal mortality by comparison of patients with and without fetal survival. RESULTS: Twenty of a total of 68 pregnant trauma patients qualified for entry into the trauma registry by having an ISS > or = 12. Overall fetal mortality was 65% (13 of 20) for ISS > or = 12, and there was one maternal death (age, 29 years; ISS, 66). There were no statistically significant differences between the fetal death and fetal survival groups in age (29.2 +/- 6.2 vs. 30.4 +/- 3.9 years), gestation (25.3 +/- 10.5 vs. 24.1 +/- 9.2 weeks), lowest systolic blood pressure (98.3 +/- 33.8 vs. 112 +/- 18.0 mm Hg), head injury rate (3 of 13 vs. 1 of 7), extremity injury rate (8 of 13 vs. 2 of 7), abdominal injury rate (4 of 13 vs. 0 of 7), pelvic fracture rate (6 of 13 vs. 1 of 7), and chest injury rate (5 of 13 vs. 3 of 7). However, ISS (27.7 +/- 3.5 vs. 14.2 +/- 11.4), lowest hemoglobin level (78.8 +/- 17.0 vs. 101.9 +/- 17.1), blood transfusions (10.8 +/- 6.3 vs. 0.9 +/- 1.6 units), length of stay (20.9 +/- 16.7 vs. 8.2 +/- 4.9 days), and the incidence of DIC (8 of 13 vs. 0 of 7) were statistically significantly different between the two groups (p < 0.05). All eight patients with abruptio placentae had associated fetal mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Apart from ISS, blood loss, and abruptio placentae; the presence of DIC was the most significant predictor of fetal mortality. This finding may represent stimulation of DIC by placental products entering the maternal circulation after significant intrauterine injury.

The effect of nociceptin on Ca2+ channel current and intracellular Ca2+ in the SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cell line.

The human neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY5Y expresses the 'orphan' opioid receptor (ORL1). We have demonstrated that nociceptin, the putative endogenous ligand for ORL1, produces a concentration-dependent inhibition of the N-type calcium channel current in these cells (IC50 42 nM). In addition, in the presence of carbachol, nociceptin increased the intracellular concentration of Ca2+ (EC50 60 nM). Both effects of nociceptin were blocked by pertussis toxin pretreatment but not by the opioid antagonists CTAP (1 microM), naltrindole (1 microM) and naloxone (10 microM).

Specific interaction of terminase, the DNA packaging enzyme of bacteriophage lambda, with the portal protein of the prohead.

Terminase, the bacteriophage lambda DNA packaging protein, is a heteromultimer of two subunits, gpNu1 and gpA, the products of genes Nu1 and A, resp. Phage 21 is a lambdoid phage that produces a terminase similar to that of lambda terminase, the subunits of 21 terminase, gp1 and gp2, have the same domain structures of their lambda analog, gpNu1 and gpA, respectively. The lambda and 21 terminases have different DNA binding and prohead binding specificities. When the C-terminal 32 amino residues of gpA replace the C-terminal 32 residues of gp2, the resulting chimeric terminase specifically uses lambda proheads, indicating that the C-terminal 32 residues of gpA are a specificity domain for prohead binding. A second chimeric terminase, in which the C-terminal six residues of gpA are replaced by the C-terminal six residues of gp2, is unable to utilize lambda proheads, and a lambda phage producing this terminase, lambda Are636, is unable to form plaques. In the present work, a pseudorevertant of lambda Are636 was isolated that contained a mutation Bms8, affecting the prohead. The B gene encodes the portal protein of lambda proheads, which forms the special vertex that is thought to serve as (1) the site of DNA entry into the prohead during packaging, (2) the site for DNA exit during DNA injection, and (3) the site of tail attachment during virion assembly. Bms8 is predicted to change residue 331 of gpB from proline to serine. Burst size measurements and in vitro DNA packaging experiments demonstrated allele-specific interactions between the Are636 terminase and Bms8 proheads. That is, wild-type terminase interacted more efficiently with wild-type proheads than with Bms8 proheads, and Are636 terminase interacted with Bms8 proheads more efficiently than with wild-type proheads. Prohead binding by lambda terminase is stimulated by an assembly catalyst, gpFI. In vitro packaging extracts lacking gpFI were used under conditions in which packaging was gpFI-independent. In the absence of gpFI, Are636 terminase interacted most efficiently with Bms8 proheads, and wild-type terminase interacted most efficiently with wild-type proheads. The allele-specific interactions in the absence of gpFI indicate that the Are636 and Bms8 mutations affect direct interactions between terminase and the portal protein, rather than acting indirectly by altering the interactions of terminase and gpB and gpFI.

Mutational analysis of the prohead binding domain of the large subunit of terminase, the bacteriophage lambda DNA packaging enzyme.

Terminase, the DNA packaging enzyme of bacteriophage lambda, is made up of two subunits, gpNul and gpA, the products of the Nu1 and A genes. The activities of terminase include DNA binding, cos cleavage and prohead binding. Specificity domains within the structure of terminase have previously been defined by genetic studies of lambda-21 hybrids. The prohead binding domain of terminase is localized to the last 32 amino acid residues of gpA. Mutations in the prohead binding domain of gpA were constructed by introducing the corresponding amino acids from gp2, the gpA analog of bacteriophage 21. The last five residues of gpA can be replaced with little effect on the burst size of lambda. A phage with a replacement of the last six residues of gpA with the corresponding residues of gp2 was unable to form plaques, indicating that the sixth-to-last residues of gpA is crucial for prohead binding. Site-specific mutagenesis of the sixth-to-last position of gpA indicated that the sixth-to-last residue of gpA must be hydrophobic, of the seven amino acids tested, only isoleucine and valine can substitute for leucine at this position. Although the last five residues of gp2 were functional when they replaced the last five residues of gpA, two results indicated that the last five residues of gpA functioned better than the corresponding residues of gp2. First, the presence of a valine residue at the sixth-to-last position of gpA allowed plaque formation, whereas replacement of the last six residues of gpA with those of gp2, which substitutes a valine residue at the sixth-to-last position, was lethal. The second set of results indicating that the last five residues of gpA function better than the gp2 residues were obtained by study of revertants of lethal substitution mutations. In constructing the replacement mutations, a short linker was inserted into the C terminus of the A gene; this insertion created a short duplication of the end of the A gene, so that the normal C-terminal codons were located downstream of the stop codon of the A gene in the substitution mutants. Revertants of the lethal substitution mutations were obtained in which a mutation in the stop codon resulted in addition of the last five residues of gpA to the end of the substitution terminase.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Manipulating the immune response in allergic disease: targeting CD4+ T cells.

CD4+ T lymphocytes play an important role in the induction and maintenance of inflammatory responses in allergic diseases. In this review, we examine some of the recent developments that have expanded our knowledge of how T cells recognize and respond to common environmental allergens. In addition, we discuss the role of allergen-derived peptides and their derivatives in the modulation of the immunological activity of allergen-specific T cells, and their potential application for immune intervention. It appears that the ability to redress the balance between qualitatively different subsets of functional components of the immune system may guide the development of therapy.

Structure of the bacteriophage lambda cohesive end site: bent DNA on both sides of the site, cosN, at which terminase introduces nicks during chromosome maturation.

Packaging of lambda DNA is mediated by the phage-encoded enzyme, terminase, which acts at a site termed cos. cos consists of cosB, the site where terminase binds lambda DNA, and cosN, the site where nicks are introduced to generate the cohesive ends of virion DNA. cos contains multiple binding sites for gpNu1, the small subunit of terminase, and integration host factor (IHF), an Escherichia coli DNA binding protein. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of circularly permuted segments of cos DNA has been used to locate major bend loci in cos. Two major bends have been located; one bend is ca 146 bp to the left of cosN while the second major bend is located ca 92 bp to the right of cosN. The major bend at 92 coincides roughly with I1, the strongest IHF binding site in cos. The possible roles of static bending in DNA packaging are discussed.

Preimmunisation hepatitis B screening in Singapore--a viewpoint from private sector clinics.

Blood samples from 1,600 persons who sought immunisation against hepatitis B in private clinics in Singapore in 1988-1989 were screened for two viral markers. Of that total, 4.81% were positive for HBsAg and 17.31% had anti-HBs levels greater than 10 mIU/ml, indicating that about 22.12% of the general population would not benefit from immunisation. Preimmunisation screening will identify persons not requiring the hepatitis B vaccine and thus, avoid wastage. When immunisation has already been performed without screening, recall for post-immunisation screening should be considered in order to detect the infectious hepatitis B carriers. Data in this study indicates that at this point in time, it is important to immunise adolescents and adults, in addition to neonates and children.
