[Occupational skin diseases from material of the Regional Center for Occupational Medicine collected during the years 1979-1991].

The authors presented data on occupational skin diseases in the Bydgoszcz Region during the years 1979-1991. They described caused of these diseases with special reference to eczema which proved to be most common. During a thirteen-year period under study, 262 occupational skin diseases were diagnosed, out of them 243 (89.3%) were the result of allergy. Changes in skin induced by chromium, nickel or cobalt were confirmed in 171 diseases. Occupational chromium allergy was diagnosed in 153 patients. The following allergens proved to be responsible in most cases for eczema: in females: chromium as well as chromium, nickel and cobalt jointly, in males: chromium as well as chromium and cobalt jointly, in both genders: chromium as well as chromium and cobalt jointly. It was found that in females incidence of occupational allergic eczema induced by nickel was almost twice that high as in males; almost five times higher when induced by nickel and cobalt jointly and almost six times higher when induced by chromium, nickel and cobalt jointly. It was indicated that in males incidence of eczema induced by chromium is one and a half times higher than in females and almost two times higher when induced by chromium and cobalt jointly.

The influence of strychnine and glycine on the metabolism of acetylcholine in the rat striatum and hippocampus.

Intracerebroventricular injection of glycine elevated the level and synthesis rate of acetylcholine and the activity of choline acetyltransferase in the striatum. Administration of strychnine alone did not change these parameters, but pretreatment with strychnine abolished the stimulatory effect of glycine on the cholinergic system of the rat striatum. Separate or combined administration of strychnine and glycine did not affect the striatal acetylcholinesterase activity. The drugs did not produce any changes in the cholinergic system indices in the hippocampus.

[Eosinophilic pustular folliculitis (Ofuji)].

A case of eosinophilic pustular folliculitis is described. The patient was a man aged 28 years with typical clinical and histological findings. The disease developed after an insect sting. Evident improvement was obtained after administration of sulphones with corticosteroids.

Investigations on the effects of certain hormones on acetylcholine metabolism in the central nervous system.

The investigations were carried out on white rats determining the level and synthesis of acetylcholine (ACh) in the cerebral cortex, striatum, and in some experiments also in the brain stem. Thyroxine administered subcutaneously increased ACh synthesis in the cerbral cortex and reduced it in the striatum without changing the level of ACh in these structures. After thyroxine administration in vitro these changes were not observed. Intraperitoneal insulin caused no changes in the level and synthesis of ACh while in vitro ACh synthesis was increased in the cortex as well as striatum after insulin. Glucagon, hydrocortisone, adiuretin and oxytocin had no effect on ACh level and synthesis in the tested structures.

The influence of taurine on acetylcholine content and synthesis in rat brain.

Taurine applied to rats intracerebroventricularly in doses 0.1--3.0 mg increased ACh level and decreased ACh synthesis in the cerebral cortex. In the striatum ACh level was increased after doses of 0.1--3.0 mg and ACh synthesis was decreased after 0.01--3.0 mg. In the hippocampus taurine appeared to decrease both ACh level (0.5--3.0 mg) and synthesis (0.1--3.0 mg). Maximum effects of taurine were observed 30--60 min following the injection. A possible role of taurine as a neurotransmitter or neuromodulator is discussed.

Acetylcholine↗

Acetylcholine metabolism in rat cerebral cortex after joint and separate administration of gamma-aminobutyric acid and bicuculline.

Bicuculline (BK) administered into the lateral ventricle (i.v.c.) of Wistar rats in a dose of 10 microgram reduced the level and the intensity of acetylcholine (ACh) synthesis in rat brain cortex. On the other hand, Bk administered in the same way in doses of 1, 5 and 10 microgram decreased the activity of acetylcholine esterase. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) administered i.v.c. in a dose of 600 microgram increased the level and synthesis of ACh and the activity of choline acetyltransferase in rat cortex. The effects of GABA were abolished, however, by pretreatment with Bk.

Adrenaline and noradrenaline effects on diuresis.

The experiments were carried out on male Wistar rats administering the tested catecholamines intraperitoneally. Water for diuresis induction and indomethacin solutions were introduced into the stomach through a tube. The hypophysis was destroyed totally with a needle inserted into an ear under stereotaxic controls. Lower adrenaline doses increased water diuresis, higher doses decreased it. Noradrenaline exerted only in antidiuretic effect. There was an analogy between the effects of these amines in diuresis and on adrenergic receptors. Hypophysectomy increased the antidiuretic action of adrenaline which could be due to absence of ACTH. Lower doses of indomethacin inhibited and higher doses enhanced the antidiuretic effect of amines. Intermediate doses were ineffective.
