Cerebellar hemorrhage in xanthomatous neoplastiform lesion of vermis cerebelli. Case report.

A xanthomatous lesion of vermis cerebelli was removed successfully from the posterior fossa of a 19 years old girl with insulin-dependent diabetes and hypercholesterolemia, admitted for cerebellar hemorrhage. A review of literature shows that this is the first case of xanthomatous lesion presented with cerebellar hemorrhage. The pathogenesis of this lesion is reviewed as it relates to the presentation of this case.

Hemangioendothelioma mimicking a median nerve neoplasm. Case report.

The authors report a case of brachial vein epithelioid hemangioendothelioma resembling a median nerve neoplasm clinically and radiologically. It was found as a mass closely attached to median nerve and arising from one of two brachial veins. Simple resection, requiring sacrifice of the vein, allowed nerve median sparing but recurrence occurred one year later. Hemangioendothelioma should be also considered in differential diagnosis and in the planning surgery of arm median nerve masses. Wide local excision is surgical treatment recommended in those cases when regional lymph nodes or systemic metastasis have not been recognized. Regional lymph nodes resection and adjunctive radiation and chemo-therapy should be considered only for "malignant" or metastatic hemangioendothelioma.

CT morphology of a median nerve neurilemmoma at the arm. Case report and review.

Computed tomography was performed in a patient with a median nerve tumor at the arm, histologically confirmed as neurilemmoma. Neurilemmoma was a slightly hypodense, solid tumor with no vascular contrast enhancement. To our knowledge this is the first CT description of a median nerve neurilemmoma at the arm. According to our experience and to previous literature, CT gives useful information regarding extent, anatomic location, size and relationship of peripheral nerve neoplasm to surrounding structures and may be an useful tool for evaluation arm nerve mass and for appropriate planning of surgical therapy.

[Use of microcomputers in biomedical research. Project and implementation of an analysis of variance program. Computer notes].

Clinical and experimental numerical data evaluation requires microcomputer programs which greatly facilitate both the ease and speed of handling statistical data processing tasks. In present study designing and construction of variance analysis program is approached for application of computers to surgery. It is an approach which allows a physician who has some familiarity with programming techniques to rapidly construct and use a family of programs for statistical manipulation of numeric information.

[Neuroendocrine surgery in Parkinson's disease: comparative analytical evaluation of approaches to microsurgical adrenalectomy. Experimental studies].

In this experimental contribution to the study of neurobiological interactions between adrenal medullary graft and CNS, is presented a model to estimate the approaches to rat adrenalectomy using statistical inference techniques. Eighteen rats were divided into three samples. The members of every sample were left adrenalectomized using lombotomic, anterior transperitoneal and posterior approaches respectively. A score was attributed to every experimentally meaningful parameter, according a previously well established plan. Scores were tested by analysis of variance and by previously planned orthogonal comparisons. Mean, standard deviation of every sample score and confidence interval for mean difference were computed. Statistical analysis results show that, objectively, there is a meaningful difference between anterior approach and posterior or lateral approach, anterior approach being more difficult then posterior or lateral approach, while there is not meaningful difference between posterior and lateral approach. Subjectively, on the contrary, there are not meaningful differences between three approaches to left adrenalectomy statistically.

An experimental model to study axonal regeneration of the rat spinal cord*.

An experimental model for study rat spinal cord regeneration is presented in this paper. Central axons regeneration has been shown after autologous peripheral nerve transplantation between two stumps of the transected spinal cord if cavitation and glial-connective scarring is reduced by microneurosurgical techniques. To this purpose, segments of nerve sciatic fascicles were inserted in a gap space of previously subpially complete or incomplete transected spinal cord and favourable oriented to both spinal cord stumps by biologic sealant. The technical details regarding spinal cord transection, nerve transplantation and spinal cord-nerve end-to-end anastomosis are described. Subpial nerve fascicles graft in previously subpial incomplete transected rat spinal cord allows to connect in suitable way white and gray matter of spinal cord stumps according to one's well established experimental plane and decreases postoperative mortality and the rat assessment during the stage of spinal shock, simultaneously allowing an easier and larger use of this experimental model.

[Normal levels of collagen-type-I telopeptide in the first 90 days of life].

Serum levels of carboxyterminal telopeptide of type I collagen (ICTP), a marker of matrix degradation, were measured by RIA test, on 184 samples of healthy newborns and children aging from 1 (cord blood) to 90 days of life. We found ICTP values about tenfold higher than the adults', with highly significant variations (P < 0.001) in the whole period studied. During the first three months of life serum levels of the bone marker show a progressive increase from 0 to 7 days, they remain unchanged until the 30th day and then decrease until the 45th day, maintaining similar values from the 45th to the 90th day of life. The authors think that the pattern of ICTP in the first week of life is under the influence of the adapting phenomena following delivery, in which catabolic processes are predominant, while in the second period ICTP modifications are related to growing processes and then to bone turnover.
