Switching noise as a probe of statistics in the fractional quantum Hall effect.

We propose an experiment to probe the unconventional quantum statistics of quasiparticles in fractional quantum Hall states by measurement of current noise. The geometry we consider is that of a Hall bar where two quantum point contacts introduce two interfering amplitudes for backscattering. Thermal fluctuations of the number of quasiparticles enclosed between the two point contacts introduce current noise, which reflects the statistics of the quasiparticles. We analyze Abelian nu=1/q states and the non-Abelian nu=5/2 state.

Physical picture behind the oscillating sign of drag in high Landau levels.

We consider the oscillating sign of the drag resistivity and its anomalous temperature dependence discovered experimentally in a bilayer system in the regime of the integer quantum Hall effect. We attribute the oscillating sign to the effect of disorder on the relation between an adiabatic momentum transfer to an electron and the displacement of its position. While in the absence of any Landau level mixing a momentum transfer implies a displacement of (with being the magnetic length), Landau level mixing induced by short range disorder adds a potentially large displacement that depends on the electron's energy, with the sign being odd with respect to the distance of that energy from the center of the Landau level. We show how the oscillating sign of drag disappears when the disorder is smooth and when the electronic states are localized.

Proposed experiments to probe the non-Abelian nu = 5/2 quantum hall state.

We propose several experiments to test the non-Abelian nature of quasiparticles in the fractional quantum Hall state at nu = 5/2. In a simplified version of the experiment suggested by [S. Das Sarma, M. Freedman, and C. Nayak, Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 166802 (2005).], interference is turned on and off when the number of localized quasiparticles between the interfering paths varies between even and odd. We find analogous effects in the thermodynamic properties of closed systems.

Localized excitations at the Mott insulator-superfluid interfaces for confined Bose-Einstein condensates.

In this Letter, we derive the dispersion relation of the surface waves at the interfaces between Mott-insulating and superfluid domains for a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice subjected to a confining potential. We then calculate their contribution to the heat capacity of the system and show how its low-temperature scaling allows an experimental test of the existence and properties of Mott insulator-superfluid domains.

Classical analog to topological nonlocal quantum interference effects.

The two main features of the Aharonov-Bohm effect are the topological dependence of accumulated phase on the winding number around the magnetic fluxon, and nonlocality-local observations at any intermediate point along the trajectories are not affected by the fluxon. The latter property is usually regarded as exclusive to quantum mechanics. Here we show that both the topological and nonlocal features of the Aharonov-Bohm effect can be manifested in a classical model that incorporates random noise. The model also suggests new types of multiparticle topological nonlocal effects which have no quantum analog.

Frictional drag in dilute bilayer 2D hole systems.

We develop a theory for frictional drag between two 2D hole layers in a dilute bilayer GaAs hole system, including effects of hole-hole and hole-phonon interactions. Our calculations suggest significant enhancement of hole drag transresistivity over the corresponding electron drag results. This enhancement originates from the exchange induced renormalization of the single-layer compressibility and the strong dependence of single-layer conductivity on density. We also address the effect of hole-phonon interaction on the drag temperature dependence. Our calculated results are in reasonable quantitative agreement with recent experimental observations.

Strong enhancement of drag and dissipation at the weak- to strong-coupling phase transition in a bilayer system at a total Landau level filling nu = 1.

We consider a bilayer electronic system at a total Landau level filling factor nu = 1, and focus on the transition from the regime of weak interlayer coupling to that of the strongly coupled (1,1,1) phase (or "quantum Hall ferromagnet"). Making the assumption that in the transition region the system is made of puddles of the (1,1,1) phase embedded in a bulk of the weakly coupled state, we show that the transition is accompanied by a strong increase in longitudinal Coulomb drag that reaches a maximum of approximately h/2e(2). In that regime the longitudinal drag increases with decreasing temperature.
