Nonlinear unbalanced bessel beams: stationary conical waves supported by nonlinear losses.

Nonlinear losses accompanying self-focusing substantially impact the dynamic balance of diffraction and nonlinearity, permitting the existence of localized and stationary solutions of the 2D + 1 nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which are stable against radial collapse. These are featured by linear, conical tails that continually refill the nonlinear, central spot. An experiment shows that the discovered solution behaves as a strong attractor for the self-focusing dynamics in Kerr media.

Magnetoelastic instability in molecular antiferromagnetic rings.

Lattice stability in a model of an antiferromagnetic ring coupled to adiabatic phonons is investigated for different values of the spin and numbers of magnetic sites. The magnetoelastic transition is shown to be heavily affected by the spin value, displaying a qualitative difference in the nature of the instability for spin one-half. Among the different synthesized materials, Cu8 seems to be the best candidate to observe lattice dimerization in these systems. Our analysis excludes stable lattice distortions in higher spin rings. The effects of thermal fluctuations are studied in the Cu8 model, where a characteristic crossover temperature is estimated.

Chiral spin liquid wave function and the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem.

We study a chiral spin liquid wave function defined as a Gutzwiller projected BCS state with a complex pairing function. After projection, spontaneous dimerization is found for any odd but finite number of chains, thus satisfying the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem, whereas for an even number of chains there is no dimerization. The two-dimensional thermodynamic limit is consistently reached for a large number of chains since the dimer order parameter vanishes in this limit. This property clearly supports the possibility of a spin liquid ground state in two dimensions with a gap to all physical excitations and with no broken translation symmetry.
