A new synthesis of 2,3-dihydrobenzo[1,4]dioxine and 3,4-dihydro-2H-benzo[1,4]oxazine derivatives by tandem palladium-catalyzed oxidative aminocarbonylation-cyclization of 2-prop-2-ynyloxyphenols and 2-prop-2-ynyloxyanilines.

2-[(Dialkylcarbamoyl)methylene]-2,3-dihydrobenzo[1,4]dioxine and 3-[(dialkylcarbamoyl)methylene]-3,4-dihydro-2H-benzo[1,4]oxazine derivatives (3 and 5, respectively) were synthesized for the first time starting from readily available 2-prop-2-ynyloxyphenols 1 and 2-prop-2-ynyloxyanilines 4, respectively, through tandem oxidative aminocarbonylation of the triple bond-intramolecular conjugate addition. Reactions were carried out in the presence of catalytic amounts of PdI2 in conjunction with an excess of KI in N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) as the solvent at 80-100 degrees C and under 20 atm (at 25 degrees C) of a 4:1 mixture of CO-air. The reaction showed a significant degree of stereoselectivity, the Z isomers being formed preferentially or exclusively. The configuration around the double bond of the major stereoisomers was unequivocally established by X-ray diffraction analysis.

Silver coordination complexes as room-temperature multifunctional materials.

A series of bischelate ionic silver complexes [Ag(L*)(2)][X] was prepared by complexation of a newly synthesized 2,2'-bipyridine containing chiral alkoxy chains in the 4,4' positions. The appropriate choice of the construction motifs allows the preparation of new materials in which several functionalities can be introduced. Indeed, when the anion X(-) is a triflate or a dodecylsulfate group, the right combination of intermolecular interactions promotes the production of liquid crystalline mesophases. Therefore, the presence of coordinating anions, which drives the supramolecular assembly, is essential to generate, at the same time, room-temperature columnar hexagonal mesomorphism, the columnar helical supramolecular structure, and excimeric emission.

Experimental and computational evidence of the intermolecular motifs in the crystal packing of luminescent pentacoordinated gallium(III) complexes.

This paper reports the synthesis, characterization, photophysical and structural properties of the homologous series of good emitting pentacoordinated GaQ'2L complexes 1-3, where Q' is 2-methyl-quinolin-8-olate and L is a phenolate substituted in para position with respect to the oxygen donor atom. A combined approach between the experimental structural analysis (i.e. the molecular fragments involved in intermolecular pi-pi interactions) and the computational study (i.e. the nature of the molecular orbitals residing therein) is discussed in order to compare the charge transport aptitude of complexes 1-3, in relation to the facing of their LUMO/LUMO, HOMO/HOMO and HOMO/LUMO arising from the molecular packing. The different phenolate ligands significantly change the packing characteristics of 1-3, with indirect effects on the electron hopping kinetics responsible for conduction in amorphous thin films. The observed preference for pyridyl-pyridyl stacking proves a faster electron conduction in comparison to hole conduction in the three complexes studied.

Synthesis and anticancer activity of cyclopalladated complexes containing 4-hydroxy-acridine.

The synthesis and the characterization (elemental analysis, (1)H NMR and X-ray) of the first cyclopalladated complexes containing 4-hydroxyacridinate as complementary ligand are described. 4-Hydroxyacridine acts as a bidentate [N,O] chelating ligand, giving rise to square planar Pd(II) complexes in the coordination of a cyclopalladated fragment of phenylpyridine or phenylpyrimidine, characterized by the presence of two almost coplanar metalated rings. The biological activity studies conducted on these new Pd(II) complexes proved that the phenylpyridine Pd(II) derivative is more efficient than cis-platinum. The intrinsically substitutional inertness of the cyclopalladated ring and the presence of the [N,O] chelated acridine ligand make these systems of particular interest in their promising biological activity.

Acridine Orange based platinum(II) complexes inducing cytotoxicity and cell cycle perturbation in spite of GSTP1 up-regulation.

A series of new ionic Pt(II) complexes of general formula [Pt(II)(A)n(Cl)(AO)]X (A=en, NH3; n=1, 2; X-=BF4-, NO3-, PF6-, CF3SO3-), 1-5, containing Acridine Orange (AO) bound to the metal atom through the endocyclic N atom, have been tested in human melanoma cells (M14, JR8 and PLF2), human neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY5Y and its cis-platin resistant subline SH-SY5Yres. The Pt(II) compounds, and in particular complexes 1 and 4, exhibit higher cytotoxic activity at lower concentration compared to cis-DDP in melanoma cells, affecting cell growth behavior and causing cell cycle perturbation. Moreover, M14 and JR8 cell lines were not able to rescue the impairment due to the new Pt(II) complexes since perturbation of cell cycle phases and cell proliferation inhibition were found after 72 h of recovery time. In order to evaluate whether GSTP1 may play a role in chemo-resistance of our melanoma model, we investigated the effect of the treatment with these Pt(II) compounds on GSTP1 gene expression. Up-regulation of GSTP1, evaluated by Qreal-time PCR was observed after treatment with complexes 1 and 4, showing that the effect of these Pt(II) compounds is GSTP1 indipendent. The lack of resistance of the new Pt(II)-AO complexes and their cytotoxicity, cell growth and cell cycle recovery in melanoma cells provide the basis for the development of new platinum anticancer compounds, directed to those tumors that over express GSTs enzymes.

Synthesis and luminescent properties of novel lanthanide(III) beta-diketone complexes with nitrogen p,p'-disubstituted aromatic ligands.

Tris-beta-diketonate lanthanide(III) complexes (Ln = Eu, Er, Yb, Tb), of general formula [Ln(acac)3 L(m)], with chelating ligands such as 4,7-disubstituted-1,10-phenanthrolines and 4,4'-disubstituted-2,2'-bipyridines, have been synthesized and fully characterized. The inductive effects of the para-substituents on the aromatic N-donor ligands have been investigated both in the solid and in the solution states. Single-crystal X-ray structures have been determined for the diethyl 1,10-phenanthroline-4,7-dicarboxylate europium and 4,4'-dimethoxy-2,2'-bipyridine erbium derivatives, revealing a distorted square antiprismatic geometry around the lanthanide atom in both cases. The influence exerted by the p,p'-substituents with respect to the nitrogen coordinating atoms on the Ln-N bond distances is discussed comparing the geometrical parameters with those found for the crystal structures containing the fragments [Ln(III)(phen)] and [Ln(III)(bipy)] obtained from the Cambridge Structural Database. The influence exerted by the electron-attracting groups on the coordination ability of the ligands, that in some cases becomes lack of coordination of the lanthanide ions, has been also detected in solution where the loss of the ligand has been followed by UV-vis spectroscopy. Moreover, the use of relatively long alkoxy chains as substituents on the 1,10-phenanthroline ligand led to the formation of a promesogenic lanthanide complex, whose thermal behavior is encouraging for the synthesis of new lanthanide liquid-crystalline species.

Investigations on the electronic effects of the peripheral 4'-group on 5-(4'-substituted)phenylazo-8-hydroxyquinoline ligands: zinc and aluminium complexes.

A new series of 5-(4'-substituted)phenylazo-8-hydroxyquinolines (H[L-R]; R = N(CH(3))(2), C(2)H(5), n-C(4)H(9), C(CH(3))(3), H, and F, ) has been prepared and the corresponding Zn[L-R](2) (1a-6a) and Al[L-R](3) (1b-6b) complexes successfully synthesized. These compounds have been studied in order to design new molecular materials with enhanced electron transport properties. The obtained species have been extensively characterized by absorption and emission spectra and by cyclic voltammetric measurements. Experimental and computational results show that the Zn[L-N(CH(3))(2)].2H(2)O (1a) and Al[L-N(CH(3))(2)](1b) complexes only feature luminescence (at 620 and 600 nm), respectively. The unique effects, which are induced by the N=N-C(6)H(4)-N(CH(3))(2) group, are further proved by a reversible electron transfer process detected by cyclic voltammetry. These outcomes, discussed on the basis of theoretical calculations performed on the (H[L-N(CH3)2])-, H[L-N(CH3)2] and (H[L-N(CH3)(2)])+ species, suggest that metal complexes formed by 5-(4'-N,N-dimethylamino)phenylazo-8-hydroxyquinoline should be considered as electron transport materials suitable for applications in photonic devices.

Synthesis and solid state characterisation of mononuclear 2-benzoylpyridine N-methyl-N-phenylhydrazone palladium(II) complexes.

2-Benzoylpyridine N-methyl-N-phenylhydrazone, HL, is a versatile ligand which reacts with [Pd(PhCN)2Cl2] forming the coordination compound [HLPdCl2], 1, characterized by the presence of the N(py)/N(im) chelate ring. When HL reacts with [Pd3(OAc)6] this gives rise to the orthometallated complex [LPd(OAc)],. In this case the Pd(II) environment consists of a N(py)/N(im) ring fused to the N(im)/C palladacycle and a monodentate acetate anion. Complex undergoes methatetical reactions with alkaline halides and complexes of general formula [LPdX](3: X = Cl; 4: X = Br; 5: X = I) are obtained. The molecular structures 3-5 of determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis proved the formation in all cases of mononuclear Pd(II) complexes containing a N(py)/N(im)/C terdentate ligand. As solid samples only compounds 3-5 exhibited luminescence at room temperature (lambdamax approximately 610 nm). This property, quite unusual in Pd(II) complexes, is discussed in terms of pi-pi] interactions, which are mainly responsible for the existence in the crystalline solid state of dimeric units.

2,6-diphenylpyridine-4-carboxylic acid.

The distinctive feature of the crystal structure of 2,6-diphenylpyridine-4-carboxylic acid, C18H13NO2, is the formation of intermolecular O-H...O hydrogen bonds that lead to the formation of centrosymmetric cyclic dimers with R2(2)(8) topology. Molecules related by translation along the b axis exhibit strong pi-pi stacking of aromatic rings, with an average interplanar distance of 3.3 A.
