Unligated diruthenium(II,II) tetra(trifluoroacetate): the first X-ray structural study, thermal compressibility, Lewis acidity, and magnetism.

The title compound, [Ru(2)(O(2)CCF(3))(4)] (1), has been obtained without any exogenous ligands and crystallized by deposition from the gas phase at 170 degrees C. Its crystal structure has been determined for the first time to confirm an infinite chain motif built on axial Ru...O interactions of the diruthenium(II,II) units. The X-ray diffraction studies at variable temperatures showed no phase transitions in the range of 295-100 K but revealed a significant decrease in the volume per atom from 14.2 to 13.3 A(3). This noticeable thermal compressibility effect is discussed in connection with the solid-state packing of the [Ru(2)(O(2)CCF(3))(4)](infinity) chains. The highly electrophilic character of the diruthenium(II,II) units has been shown by the gas-phase deposition reaction of [Ru(2)(O(2)CCF(3))(4)] with an aromatic donor substrate, namely [2.2]paracyclophane (C(16)H(16)). As a result of the above reaction, a new arene adduct [Ru(2)(O(2)CCF(3))(4).C(16)H(16)] (2) has been isolated in crystalline form. It has an extended one-dimensional (1D) chain structure comprised of alternating building units and based on the rare bridging mode of [2.2]paracyclophane, [Ru(2)(O(2)CCF(3))(4).(mu(2)-eta(2):eta(2)-C(16)H(16))](infinity). The magnetic susceptibility of 1 and 2 has been measured and compared in the range of 1.8-300 K. In addition, in the course of synthesis of 1 by the carboxylate exchange reactions, a new mixed-carboxylate diruthenium(II,II) core complex [Ru(2)(O(2)CCF(3))(3)(O(2)CC(2)H(5))] (3), bearing no exogenous ligands, has also been isolated and structurally characterized. It exhibits an interesting polymeric structure in which the ruthenium(II) centers selectively form axial interdimer contacts with the O-atoms of the propionate groups only.

Dimethyl selenoxide.

The title molecule, C2H6OSe, has a trigonal-pyramidal structure analogous to that of its sulfur analog, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The Se-O distance in dimethyl selenoxide (DMSeO) is 1.6756 (16) A [versus S-O of 1.531 (5) A in DMSO], consistent with a highly polar bond. In the solid state, the molecules of DMSeO are linked into centrosymmetric dimers formed by two C-H...O hydrogen bonds. These dimers further aggregate into a ladder-like supramolecular network via two additional intermolecular C-H...O interactions. As a result, each O atom of DMSeO acts as an acceptor of three hydrogen bonds.

1,4-Bis(p-tolylethynyl)benzene.

The rod-like molecule of the title hydrocarbon, C24H18, is centrosymmetric, with the centroid of the central benzene ring residing on an inversion center. The molecules display a planar conformation of the benzene rings and aggregate into stacks along the [010] direction via Csp(3)-H...pi(arene) interactions, thus forming a stair-like pseudo-two-dimensional network. Each molecule acts as both a C-H hydrogen donor and a pi-arene acceptor, forming four hydrogen bonds per molecule.

Bulk material vs. single crystal: powder diffraction to the rescue.

The crystal structure of bulk microcrystalline material obtained by interaction of two rigid building blocks, namely dirhodium(ii) tetra(trifluoroacetate), [Rh2(O2CCF3)4], and bis(4'-pyridyl)diphenylsilane, (C6H5)2Si(C5H4N)2, has been solved ab initio using X-ray powder diffraction data. The title product of the 1 [ratio] 1 composition, [Rh2(O2CCF3)4.(mu2-(C6H5)2Si(C5H4N)2)], is a one-dimensional zigzag polymer built on axial Rh...N interactions averaged at 2.16 A. Its structural characterization complements the previously reported product of the 2:1 composition obtained from the same reaction, namely {[Rh2(O2CCF3)4]2.(mu4-(C6H5)2Si(C5H4N)2)}. The latter has a 2D layered network revealed by the single crystal diffraction study. A combination of powder and single crystal X-ray techniques is shown to be methodologically important and complementary for understanding of product assembling in the system.
