Field theories and exact stochastic equations for interacting particle systems.

We consider the dynamics of interacting particles with reaction and diffusion. Starting from the underlying discrete stochastic jump process we derive a general field theory describing the dynamics of the density field, which we relate to an exact stochastic equation on the density field. We show how our field theory maps onto the original Doi-Peliti formalism, allowing us to clarify further the issue of the "imaginary" Langevin noise that appears in the context of reaction-diffusion processes. Our procedure applies to a wide class of problems and is related to large deviation functional techniques developed recently to describe fluctuations of nonequilibrium systems in the hydrodynamic limit.

Spatially heterogeneous dynamics in a model for granular compaction.

We suggest the emergence of spatially correlated dynamics in slowly compacting dense granular media by analyzing analytically and numerically multipoint correlation functions in a simple particle model characterized by slow nonequilibrium dynamics. We show that the logarithmically slow dynamics at large times is accompanied by spatially extended dynamic structures that resemble the ones observed in glass-forming liquids and dense colloidal suspensions. This suggests that dynamic heterogeneity is another key common feature present in very different jamming materials.

Possible test of the thermodynamic approach to granular media.

We study the steady state distribution of the energy of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model driven by a tapping mechanism which mimics the mechanically driven dynamics of granular media. The dynamics consists of two phases: a zero temperature relaxation phase which leads the system to a metastable state, then a tapping which excites the system thus reactivating the relaxational dynamics. Numerically, we investigate whether the distribution of the energies of the blocked states obtained agrees with a simple canonical form of the Edwards measure. It is found that this canonical measure is in good agreement with the dynamically measured energy distribution. A possible experimental test of the Edwards measure based on the study here is proposed.
