The vermiform appendix: not a useless organ.

The appendix has often been seen more as a nuisance rather than an important part of the human anatomy. Early misconceptions have led to the indiscriminate removal of the appendix from the body. Long thought to be an evolutionary remnant of little significance to normal physiology, the appendix has more recently been identified as an important component of mammalian mucosal immune function, particularly B-lymphocyte-mediated immune responses and extrathymically derived T-lymphocytes. This structure helps in the proper movement and removal of waste matter in the digestive system, contains lymphatic vessels that regulate pathogens, and lastly, might even produce early defences that prevent deadly diseases. The appendix is one of the guardians of the internal environment of the body from the hostile external environment.

Endothelial cell injury in newborn rat liver by antenatal chloroquine exposure.

OBJECTIVE: To see the effect of chloroquine on endothelial cells in developing liver of albino rats. DESIGN: Case control prospective study. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: Anatomy Department of Post Graduate Medical Institute, Lahore from September to December 2000. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twenty-four pregnant female albino rats were divided in 4 groups. The gestation period in rats ranges from 20-22 days, which was divided into three trimesters of seven days each. Oral dose of chloroquine 700 mg/kg body weight in first, second and third weeks of pregnancy was administered. Hepatic tissue of newborn rats were analyzed histologically. RESULTS: Chloroquine induced considerable endothelial cell injury in newborn rat liver. Central venular endothelial cells(CVECs) and sinusoidal endothelial cells(SECs) were specially involved. Livers from animals exposed to chloroquine during the third trimester showed many areas of intrahepatic hemorrhage due to complete destruction of endothelial lining of central veins. CONCLUSION: Chloroquine is toxic to endothelial cells of liver and should be avoided during pregnancy.

Unravelling the role of pineal gland.

The pineal gland has been classically considered as a vestigial organ with mystic properties. With the development of new methodical experiments, its physiologic actions are unravelled vary depending on the level of the phylogenetic scale. Since the discovery of melatonin as the principal hormone of the pineal gland, is an important hormone involved in the control of circadian rhythms and other diverse biological functions. Recent metabolic, receptor and functional studies have discovered melatoninergic system(s) in living organisms, its organization, physiology and a role in some pathologic conditions. The melatonin-generating system is characterized by three basic features: (1) photosensitivity, (2) diurnal (or circadian) rhythmicity (with highest levels of melatonin production occurring at night in darkness), and (3) age-related decline in its activity.
