A guide to developing a systematic review.

Systematic reviews are used to gather information from a variety of sources and distill information based on best evidence synthesis, while also excluding poor quality studies via explicit validity checks. This article provides a roadmap to conducting a systematic review with the Cochrane Collaboration and uses an example of a completed systematic review. The literature is drawn upon to provide rationale for the processes undertaken. The aim of the sample systematic review was to identify and review all randomized controlled trials evaluating disposable surgical face masks worn by surgical team members during clean surgery to prevent postoperative surgical wound infection.

Theatre nursing in Portugal.

A recent opportunity to visit Porto, in Portugal, allowed Allyson Lipp to observe operating department nursing in that city. In this article, Allyson explains the background to her visit, identifies some of the practices observed and compares the operating department she visited in Portugal, and nursing in that country, with their counterparts in the UK.

The effectiveness of surgical face masks: what the literature shows.

The use and withdrawal of surgical face masks in recent years has occurred in an ad hoc manner that is incompatible with evidence-based practice. Much of the literature on masks consists of anecdotal evidence or summaries of previous studies. The rationale for wearing masks has shifted from protection of the patient to protection of the health care professional wearing the mask. Currently there is little evidence that wearing a surgical mask provides sufficient protection from all the hazards likely to be encountered in an acute health care setting: the use of a respirator and face shield should be considered depending on the circumstances.
