Plaque and salivary pH changes after consumption of fresh fruit juices.

The concept of health has prevailed for centuries and the dietary habits are apparently changing with modernization. "Healthy eating" is now perceived to be important. The desirability of a healthful lifestyle has led to an increased consumption of juices. Drinking large amount of fruit juice is frequently practiced these days and the consumption of these juices is further modified with behavioral habits such as swishing and frothing the drinks around the mouth, sucking frozen fruit juices, use of feeder cups at bed time etc. Hence this study was conducted to find the acidogenic potential of the commonly consumed fresh fruit juices (Grapes, orange, and pineapple) and the juices stored at various temperatures (room temperature, refrigerator and freezer) on the plaque and saliva at various intervals. It was observed that grape juice was more acidogenic compared to orange and pineapple juice. Frozen fruit juices caused a greater drop in plaque and salivary pH followed by the refrigerated juice.

Sex identification from exfoliated primary teeth--a PCR study.

Teeth endure postmortem degradation and extreme changes in ambient temperature and pressure better than most human tissues. In the present day scenario the growing number of crime against children in the form of battering, physical/sexual abuse, abduction and kidnapping, the use of exfoliated primary teeth, become many times the only evidence available at the crime scene. Despite exposure of the body to burial, mutilation, explosion or incineration, it is usually possible to extract DNA from pulp tissue of tooth with sufficient quality and quantity. Hence the present study was undertaken to find out the sex of a child from exfoliated/extracted deciduous teeth using a Polymerase Chain reaction (PCR) based analysis. Tooth samples were stored in room temperature after double coding for various periods. Dental pulp tissue was collected from each sample and DNA was isolated by proteinase-k digestion and phenol chloroform extraction methods. PCR amplification was done with two sets of oligonucleiotide primers. Amplification of X (131bp) and Y-specific sequences (172bp) in males and that of the X-specific sequence in females was observed and compared with the template DNA showing male and female controls. Determination of sexes of all freshly collected samples within 24 hours and after 1 month of extraction respectively gave 100% result. However, PCR was not found to be an effective method for sex determination after 6 months post extraction.

Tuberous sclerosis: a case report.

A case of tuberous sclerosis (TS) with classic triad of seizures, mental deficiency and angiofibromas is presented. The child also presented with self-mutilating behavior, which resulted in the fracture of her anterior teeth. A comprehensive treatment was rendered to the patient under general anesthesia and a mouth guard was given to prevent further trauma to the teeth.

The developmental stages of the middle phalanx of the third finger (MP3): a sole indicator in assessing the skeletal maturity?

Assessment of skeletal maturity is an integral part of interceptive diagnosis and treatment planning. The present day methods of skeletal maturity assessment like the hand-wrist radiographs or cervical vertebrae radiographs are expensive, require elaborate equipment and accounts for high radiation exposure, especially for growing children. The present study was thus undertaken to provide a simple and practical method of skeletal maturity assessment using the developmental stages of the middle phalanx of the third finger (MP3) as seen on an IOPA film taken using a standard dental x-ray machine. The results of the study showed that this simple method was highly reliable and could be used as an alternative method to assess the skeletal maturity of growing children.

The removal of the smear layer using EGTA: a scanning electron microscopic study.

The smear layer associated with endodontic instrumentation is currently thought to be a thin layer that occludes the orifices of the dentinal tubules and covers the intertubular dentin of the prepared canal wall. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of ethylene glycol bis (beta-amino ethyl ether)-N, N, N', N'-tetra acetic acid (EGTA) and ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) on removal of the smear layer through the scanning electron microscopy. Twenty four single rooted teeth were selected, instrumented and irrigated with various solutions and the specimens were processed for scanning electron microscopy. It was found that though both EGTA and EDTA completely removed the smear layer, EDTA caused erosion and conjugation of the tubules, whereas, EGTA effectively removed the smear layer without inducing any erosion. It was thus concluded that EGTA can be effectively used as an alternative chelator for the removal of the smear layer.

Estimation of the fluoride concentrations in human breast milk, cow's milk and infant formulae.

Fluoride has a significant effect on the prevention of dental caries. The major dietary intake of the infants constitutes the breast milk cow's milk and infant milk formulations in which the fluoride contents varies widely. Hence it is important to identify the potential milk source of high fluoride intake in an infant's diet and to evaluate the need for the fluoride supplementation. The aim of the present study was to determine the fluoride concentrations in breast milk, cow's milk, infant formulae and water samples in Mangalore city, India, using fluoride electrode (Orion Model 940900). It was noted that minimal amount of fluoride was found to be present in breast milk and cow's milk samples, while the fluoride content of water samples was found to be below the optimum level. On the contrary the infant formulae were found to have equal or more levels of fluoride.

Dental caries status of children with bronchial asthma.

The purpose of the present study was to determine the dental caries status in children with bronchial asthma and to examine the correlation with the severity of asthma and the form of medication being taken. Two hundred and five asthmatic children of both sexes from three to eighteen years old participated in this study. Children were divided into groups: primary, mixed and permanent dentitions. They were also grouped depending on the severity of asthma into mild, moderate and severe asthma and depending on the form of medication being used into inhaler, syrup, tablet and combination group. In the primary dentition group, the asthmatic children had a mean deft of 5.02 +/- 3.05 and a caries prevalence of 75.75%, in the mixed dentition group, the mean deft was 3.45 +/- 2.89 and mean DMFT was 4.83 +/- 3.66 with a caries prevalence of 78.31%. In the permanent dentition the mean DMFT was 5.17 +/- 4.54 and a caries prevalence of 83.15%. Asthmatic children had a high caries prevalence and it increased with the severity of bronchial asthma. The caries prevalence was highest in those taking medication in the form of syrup.

Pulse oximetry: a diagnostic instrument in pulpal vitality testing.

One hundred children with normal maxillary central and lateral incisors were subjected to vitality tests each by electrical and pulse oximetry. As a control population to confirm the readings, 10 known nonvital anterior teeth with complete endodontic fillings were tested. The systemic oxygen saturation values measured on the index finger of the patient served as the control for the comparison of the oxygen saturation values measure on the teeth. The SaO2 values obtained on the teeth were correlated with the electrical test readings. The correlation between the SaO2 readings and electrical testing readings were found to be negative i.e. as the values of the electrical pulp testing reading increased, the SaO2 values decreased. Since a reproducible SaO2 level is obtainable on the vital teeth, pulse oximetry has immediate clinical value in providing base line vitality data for the traumatised teeth.
