Finalization of rule removes uncertainty.
Although the deadline for compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act Privacy Rule is only a few months away, some hospitals and other covered entities have essentially placed HIPAA compliance efforts on hold for the past several months because of the perceived uncertainty surrounding the rule's requirements. A new final rule was released on Aug. 9, removing this uncertainty and maintaining the April 14, 2003, deadline.

Recognizing and reducing risks: HIPAA privacy and security enforcement.
With the passing of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) privacy rule deadline and the security rule deadline looming, many covered entities are left wondering if they are doing enough to prevent privacy and security breaches and what type of exposure their organization could face in the event of a breach.
