Suppression of radiative losses of surface polaritons on nanostructured thin metal films.

The strong electromagnetic coupling between surface plasmon polariton modes on opposite interfaces of a finite thickness periodically nanostructured metal film has been studied. Surface polariton dispersion and associated electromagnetic field distributions have been analyzed. It was shown that at a frequency that corresponds to the crossing of film Bloch modes of different symmetries, the radiative losses of surface polaritons that are related to the polaritons' coupling to light during propagation on the structured surface are suppressed.

Far-field optical microscopy with a nanometer-scale resolution based on the in-plane image magnification by surface plasmon polaritons.

A new far-field optical microscopy capable of reaching nanometer-scale resolution is developed using the in-plane image magnification by surface plasmon polaritons. This approach is based on the optical properties of a metal-dielectric interface that may provide extremely large values of the effective refractive index neff up to 10(3) as seen by surface polaritons, and thus the diffraction limited resolution can reach nanometer-scale values of lambda/2neff. The experimental realization of the microscope has demonstrated the optical resolution better than 60 nm at 515 nm illumination wavelength.

Near-field second-harmonic generation.

Near-field microscopy of second-harmonic generation combines high surface sensitivity of the nonlinear optical process and high spatial resolution of the near-field optics. It enables investigation of nonlinear optical phenomena at the nanoscale and provides an opportunity to develop a highly sensitive optical technique for materials characterization. In this paper we overview apertured and apertureless near-field approaches for local studies of second-harmonic generation. Near-field second-harmonic generation at metal surfaces and nanostructures and related electromagnetic field enhancement and confinement effects are considered. The latter demonstrates the feasibility of achieving nanoscale light sources using second-harmonic generation. Applications of second-harmonic near-field microscopy for characterization of magnetic and ferroelectric materials are also discussed. Nonlinear nano-optics can lead to the development of novel photonic devices on the sub-wavelength-scale as well as new tools for imaging and local optical studies of materials, chemical and biological species.

Single-photon tunneling in photonic crystals with deep defect states.

A new design for a single-photon tunneling device based on tunneling of light through a gap in a photonic crystal linear waveguide containing a deep defect state is suggested. Unlike recently observed single-photon tunneling through nanometer scale nonlinear pinholes in a thick gold film, in the device described here the photon current should be strictly conserved. By appropriate design of the barrier width, defect level position in the bandgap, and defect spatial position in the barrier, a desired photon tunneling rate can readily be engineered.
