Characterization of polyvinyl alcohol/acrylamide holographic memories with a first-harmonic diffusion model.

Several theoretical models have been proposed to predict the behavior of photopolymers as holographic recording materials. Basically these models have been applied to study thin layers (around 100 microm thick). The increasing importance of holographic memories recorded in photopolymers (thickness of > 500 microm) makes it necessary to extend the ideas proposed by these models to study thick photopolymer layers. We calculate the temporal evolution of the diffraction efficiencies for thick layers using a first-harmonic diffusion model, and the results obtained are compared with the corresponding values for thin layers. Furthermore, the values of the average diffusivity of the polymer chains after the grating is formed are also obtained. In general, we find that the monomer and polymer diffusivity increases when higher values of thickness are used.

Modulation light efficiency of diffractive lenses displayed in a restricted phase-mostly modulation display.

We present an analysis of the diffraction efficiency of diffractive lenses displayed on spatial light modulators that depends on the modulation response of the display. An ideal display would produce continuous phase-only modulation, reaching a maximum phase-modulation depth of 2pi. We introduce the concept of modulation diffraction efficiency that accounts for the effect of nonlinearities only in the phase modulation of the display. We review a diffractive model with which to evaluate this modulation efficiency, including modulation defects such as nonlinear phase modulation, coupled amplitude modulation, phase quantization, and a limited modulation depth. We apply this diffractive model to Fresnel lenses and show that these modulation defects produce a lens multiplex effect. Finally we demonstrate that the application of a minimum Euclidean projection principle leads to high modulation diffraction efficiency even if the phase-modulation depth is much less than 2pi. We demonstrate that the modulation efficiency can exceed 90% for a modulation depth of 1.4pi and can exceed 40% (the equivalent for a binary phase element) for a modulation depth of only 0.7pi. Experimental results from use of a twisted nematic liquid-crystal display are presented to confirm these conclusions.

Diffusion-based model to predict the conservation of gratings recorded in poly(vinyl alcohol)-acrylamide photopolymer.

Photopolymers are interesting materials for use in recording information in holography. We study the holographic behavior and stability of volume holograms recorded in poly(vinyl alcohol)--acrylamide photopolymers with and without a cross linker. Using a first-harmonic diffusion model, we analyze the residual monomer that remains when volume diffraction gratings are recorded in photopolymer materials. The importance of this residual monomer to the stability of the gratings is evaluated.

Edge-enhanced imaging with polyvinyl alcohol/acrylamide photopolymer gratings.

We demonstrate edge-enhanced imaging produced by volume phase gratings recorded on a polyvinyl alcohol/acrylamide photopolymer. Bragg diffraction, exhibited by volume gratings, modifies the impulse response of the imaging system, facilitating spatial filtering operations with no need for a physical Fourier plane. We demonstrate that Kogelnik's coupled-wave theory can be used to calculate the transfer function for the transmitted and the diffracted orders. The experimental and simulated results agree, and they demonstrate the feasibility of our proposal.

Phasor analysis of eigenvectors generated in liquid-crystal displays.

We analyze optical systems for creating phase-only operation of a liquid-crystal display (LCD). We introduce a new formalism in which any input or output polarization state can be described in terms of a linear combination of the eigenvectors of the LCD. We use a phasor analysis to examine the linear combination of the eigenvectors and show how improved performance can be obtained with a new configuration. We experimentally compare the intensity and phase operation for two configurations with the same spatial light modulator and show the improved performance with the new configuration.
