Giant bubble pinch-off.

Self-similarity has been the paradigmatic picture for the pinch-off of a drop. Here we will show through high-speed imaging and boundary integral simulations that the inverse problem, the pinch-off of an air bubble in water, is not self-similar in a strict sense: A disk is quickly pulled through a water surface, leading to a giant, cylindrical void which after collapse creates an upward and a downward jet. Only in the limiting case of large Froude numbers does the purely inertial scaling h(-logh)(1/4) proportional tau(1/2) for the neck radius h [J. M. Gordillo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 194501 (2005)] become visible. For any finite Froude number the collapse is slower, and a second length scale, the curvature of the void, comes into play. Both length scales are found to exhibit power-law scaling in time, but with different exponents depending on the Froude number, signaling the nonuniversality of the bubble pinch-off.

Harmonic enhancement of single-bubble sonoluminescence.

It is known from experiment that the light emission from a sonoluminescing bubble can be increased by using more than one driving frequency. In this paper, a systematic method to determine the optimal conditions of pressure amplitude and relative phase for this effect is described. As a specific application, a two-frequency system--26.5 kHz and 53 kHz--is considered. It is found that the maximum temperatures achievable can be appreciably increased with respect to single-frequency drive, still maintaining spherical stability, provided the dissolved inert gas concentration is kept extremely low in order to maintain diffusive stability.

Vapor bubbles in flow and acoustic fields.

A review of several aspects of the interaction of bubbles with acoustic and flow fields is presented. The focus of the paper is on bubbles in hot liquids, in which the bubble contains mostly vapor, with little or no permanent gas. The topics covered include the effect of translation on condensation in a subcooled liquid, the action of pressure gradients on bubbles convected by a liquid flow, rectified heat diffusion on stationary and moving bubbles, the effect of permanent gas on this phenomenon, and the action of pressure-radiation (or Bjerknes) forces.

A nonlinear model of thermoacoustic devices.

This paper presents a nonlinear, time-domain model of thermoacoustic devices based on cross-sectional averaged equations. Heat transfer perpendicular to the device axis--which lies at the core of thermoacoustic effects--is modeled in a novel and more realistic way. Heat conduction in the solid surfaces surrounding the fluid medium is included. Contrary to the previous versions of this model [Watanabe et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 102, 3484-3496 (1997)], the present version does not require artificial damping and is numerically robust. The model performance is illustrated on several examples: a prime mover, an externally driven thermoacoustic refrigerator, and a combined prime mover/refrigerator system.
