Metal-organic frameworks with exceptionally high capacity for storage of carbon dioxide at room temperature.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show high CO2 storage capacity at room temperature. Gravimetric CO2 isotherms for MOF-2, MOF-505, Cu3(BTC)2, MOF-74, IRMOFs-11, -3, -6, and -1, and MOF-177 are reported up to 42 bar. Type I isotherms are found in all cases except for MOFs based on Zn4O(O2C)6 clusters, which reveal a sigmoidal isotherm (having a step). The various pressures of the isotherm steps correlate with increasing pore size, which indicates potential for gas separations. The amine functionality of the IRMOF-3 pore shows evidence of relatively increased affinity for CO2. Capacities qualitatively scale with surface area and range from 3.2 mmol/g for MOF-2 to 33.5 mmol/g (320 cm3(STP)/cm3, 147 wt %) for MOF-177, the highest CO2 capacity of any porous material reported.

Design, synthesis, structure, and gas (N2, Ar, CO2, CH4, and H2) sorption properties of porous metal-organic tetrahedral and heterocuboidal polyhedra.

A strategy based on assembling metal ions and organic carboxylate links has been applied for the design and synthesis of a new class of porous, truncated tetrahedral and heterocuboidal polyhedra, whose pore size and functionality can be systematically varied. The synthesis of this series of metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) employs sulfate-capped oxygen-centered iron-carboxylate trimers, Fe3O(CO2)3(-)(SO4)3, as rigid nodes separated by linear (phenyl, biphenyl, terphenyl, and tetrahydropyrene) or trigonal (benzenetriphenyl) links to yield five highly crystalline polyhedra of general formula [NH2(CH3)2]8[Fe12O4(-)(SO4)12(link)x(py)12].G (x = 6 for linear or 4 for trigonal, py = pyridine, G = guests). In this series, the size of each polyhedron has been varied from 20.0 to 28.5 A (on edge), and the corresponding pore diameter from 7.3 to 13.3 A. Gas sorption isotherms were measured for three members of this series to reveal significant uptake of gases (N2, Ar, CO2, H2, CH4) and benzene and exhibit Type I sorption behavior that is indicative of permanent porosity. The apparent surface areas for these compounds range from 387 to 480 m(2)/g.

Hydrogen sorption in functionalized metal-organic frameworks.

Five porous metal-organic frameworks based on linking zinc oxide clusters with benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate, naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylate, 4,5,9,10-tetrahydropyrene-2,7-dicarboxylate, 2,3,5,6-tetramethylbenzene-1,4-dicarboxylate, or benzene-1,3,5-tris(4-benzoate) were synthesized in gram-scale quantities to measure their hydrogen uptake properties. Hydrogen adsorption isotherms measured at 77 K show a distinct dependence of uptake on the nature of the link. At 1 atm, the materials sorb between 4.2 and 9.3 molecules of H2 per formula unit. The results imply a trend in hydrogen uptake with the number of rings in the organic moiety.
