[Fractures of the canines require attention].

Hardly any attention was paid to a barely visible fracture of a canine tooth (104) in an 18-month-old dog. When the dog was 6-years old, a fistulous opening was seen on the bridge of the nose. A year later, radiography revealed a periapical process. The investigations performed and treatment given are described, as is the correct way to handle fractures of the canines.

[The cat with exposed tooth roots: a missed diagnosis?].

The distal roots of the mandibular molars (309 & 409) are often exposed in cats with chronic, recurrent inflammation of the oral mucous membranes. The disorder can be easily detected during a thorough investigation under light sedation. Some reasons are given why the diagnostic investigation is sometimes performed incompletely.

[Dentition of the older animal].

Ageing is accompanied by the natural loss and wear of hard and soft dental tissues. While ageing can influence pathological processes affecting the dentition, it is not the cause of these processes. The development, growth, attrition, abrasion, and loss of teeth is determined in part by ageing. Periodontal disease is the result of the accumulation of dental plaque and can occur in young animals. Unfortunately, gingivitis or periodontitis is often not diagnosed or diagnosed too late by pet owners and veterinarians.

[Animals go to the veterinarian, people go to the dentist].

The Dutch law and other regulations provide that only registered veterinarians can treat animals. Moreover, by law only registered individuals may use the title veterinarian or dentist. The veterinary professional should be open to advice, help, and technical assistance from other professionals working with human or animals patients. The dental treatment of animal patients must not be carried out in a dental surgery or hospital used by human patients.
