Factors that influence students in choosing rural nursing practice: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Nursing shortages continue globally and are especially critical in rural and remote communities. Attracting nurses to work in less populated regions presents challenges that differ from those in urban areas. METHODS: This pilot study focused on self-identified factors of nursing students who expressed an interest in rural practice post-graduation. The sample included students from the USA and Canada, who were enrolled in graduate and under graduate programs of nursing, and were attending an international rural nursing conference. RESULTS: Findings from the pencil and paper short answer survey found those who have life experiences and connections in small communities are more likely to choose this setting. Post-graduation employment preference was reinforced by ongoing exposure to rural theory and practice settings in their programs of study. Nursing scholars may find this study useful to further examine students' employment preferences, and to develop targeted strategies to better prepare those having an interest in rural practice. CONCLUSION: Evidence based findings are critically needed to recruit and retain nurses to address critical nursing shortages in rural regions in North America and globally.

International perspectives on rural nursing: Australia, Canada, USA.

This article compares and contrasts nursing practice in rural areas based on selected publications by nurse scholars from Australia, Canada and the USA. By no means is the analysis complete; rather this preliminary effort is designed to provoke interest about rural nursing in the global village. The information can be used to examine the rural phenomenon in greater depth from an international perspective and challenges nurses to collaborate, study, develop and refine the foundations of rural practice across nations and cultures.

Creating nursing research opportunities in rural healthcare facilities.

Advanced practice registered nurses, and clinical nurse specialists in particular, play a critical role in creating an institutional research culture and developing nurses' knowledge about the research process, implementing evidence-based care, and participating in continuous quality improvement initiatives. This article focuses on creating nursing research opportunities in small healthcare facilities located in rural settings.

Interventions that address cancer health disparities in women.

Health disparities exist in cancer incidence and mortality rates among certain populations. Women of low socioeconomic status and minority women are at particular risk for not adhering to recommended cancer screening guidelines. Such behaviors may contribute to disparities when cancers are discovered at later stages, contributing to higher mortality rates in these women. Barriers to screening tests exist and are factors in preventing women from accessing available screening tests for breast and cervical cancer. Once barriers are identified, interventions can be developed to reduce certain health disparities. This article is a review of the literature that focuses on interventions that have been successful in addressing barriers that interfere with cancer screening in women.

Roles, responsibilities, and outcome expectations of endowed chairs in nursing.

This study, using a modified Delphi approach, examines the purpose, roles, responsibilities, and outcomes of endowed chairholders in nursing. Deans and faculty who hold endowed chairs participated in this 3-phased study. While the ranking of importance varied between these 2 groups of experts, common themes emerged relative to the phenomenon under investigation. Findings from this preliminary work can be used by deans and chairholders to develop job descriptions and evaluate the impact of endowments in a program of nursing.

Case management: considerations for working with diverse rural client systems.

In recent years citations on case management have proliferated; however, only a few address this model relative to rural settings. There is wide variability in the definition of rural, but one constant remains; it can be demanding and costly to provide services in more remote regions. Accessibility issues are associated with low population density, transportation, and communication infrastructures coupled with great distances between healthcare services and providers. Such factors pose challenges for urban-based providers of health-related services to meet the needs of rural residents in their catchment areas. This article highlights demographic, geographic, economic, and socio-cultural considerations that could assist case managers to better meet the needs of their rural-based clients. The information herein is a synthesis of the literature, anecdotal reports by case managers who work with rural client-systems (a client and whomever he/she includes in their immediate support system), and the author's personal and professional experience in rural communities.
