Mercury, 101.

October 3, 2003, The Washington Post--Students steal a 250-milliliter container of mercury from a science lab and spread it around the school and grounds. As of October 28, 2003, the school has been shut down and decontaminated, five people showed some type of mercury exposure, more than 100 homes were tested and found contaminated, families were told to leave with the clothes on their backs, city buses were cleaned due to mercury contamination, 1,300 students were displaced and in temporary classrooms, and the cleanup and investigation costs are in the millions and still climbing. As the community nurse, would you know the health risks and could you assist students, parents, and educators?

Arsenic in a child's world.

Ten-year-old Tim P. presented at a local emergency room complaining of bloody diarrhea. Despite treatment, his diarrhea continued with additional symptoms of nausea, raspy voice, headaches, abdominal pain, tingling of the feet and hands, lethargy, and eczema. Do you recognize the health risks and clinical aspects of arsenic, and could you assist Tim and his family?

Indoor Air Quality: part II--what it does.

Newton, MA. A recent report indicated air quality samples taken from several rooms in the town's North High School had elevated CO2 levels of 2,000 parts per million (ppm) (Viser, 2004). State standards set 800 ppm as the optimum reading. Although not an immediate health issue, high CO2 levels are indicative of poor air circulation--clean air comes in but stale air is not vented out. Safety issues arise in the school setting when chemicals or toxic substances are in use and cannot be vented, therefore posing the health risk (Viser, 2004). Poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) in schools can result in decreased academic performance and days lost due to illness in the school age population (Environmental Protection Agency [EPA], 2003). As the school nurse at North High School, what would you do?
