[Double-orifice mitral valve -- case report].

A case of 16 year old male with an initial diagnosis of the mitral stenosis is presented. The transthoracic echocardiography showed the complete bridge type double-orifice mitral valve with a larger medial orifice.

[The analysis of refractive error in children and adolescents from 6-15 years of age based on 1000 examinations in two major Polish regions].

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to present the results of screening examinations of refractive errors, taken on 1002 of school children ranging from 6 to 15 years of age. MATERIAL AND METHODS: As the result of Internet screening visual acuity and color perception tests named "I can see..." in 10,021 children from randomly chosen schools in Poland in the year 2002, the group of 1002 children was chosen. In this group, the subjective and objective refractive error examination was taken as well as the visual acuity test, color perception with the use of Ishihara tables and full ophthalmologic examination. RESULTS: Average visual acuity was RE: 0.72 (SD +/- 0.31) and LE: 0.72 (SD +/- 0.31). The prevalence of emmetropia was 34%. In the examined group myopia in 17%, hyperopia in 20%, astigmatism in 5.5% of children was found, and in 24.5% of patients complex errors occur such as myopic and hyperopic astigmatism.

Some biochemical properties of fungi from genera Rhodotorula and Trichosporon isolated from Sulejów Reservoir bath water.

The hydrolytic activity of Rhodotorula and Trichosporon strains isolated from Sulej6w Reservoir water and sediments were studied. Also tolerance of high concentrations of natrium chloride and biogenic compounds was evaluated. Fungi from genera Rhodotorula and Trichosporon showed the activity of 12 and 10 from 19 hydrolases of API Zym test, respectively. Tolerance tests showed high resistance of Rhodotorula glutinis to hypertonic saline solutions and very high resistance of both Rhodotorula and Trichosporon strains to nitrate, ammonium and phosphate compounds. These properties of fungi may influence the distribution and the quantity of fungi in aquatic reservoirs.

[Lipomatous hyperthrophy of the atrial septum - two case reports].

Lipomatous hyperthrophy of the atrial septum is a rarely diagnosed but not rarely occurring benign hyperplasia of the lipomatous tissue. Apart from possible arrhythmias and single description of superior vena cava obstruction by extremely hypertrophied septum, lipomatous hyperthrophy does not seem to have any significant clinical importance. The potential danger is however associated with a false diagnosis of malignant tumor of the heart and unnecessary selection for cardiac surgery. We present two patients with the final diagnosis of benign lipomatous hyperthrophy of the atrial septum, referred to our center with an initial diagnosis of right atrial tumor.

Prevalence of potentially pathogenic fungi in the bathing sites of the Sulejów Reservoir.

Progressive degradation of water ecosystems may contribute to the propagation of fungi pathogenic to humans and animals. The aim of this study was a quantitative evaluation and identification of species of potentially pathogenic fungi in the littoral zone of the Sulejów Reservoir used as recreation site. We studied samples of surface water and sediments collected from 6 sampling sites of the reservoir in the years 2000 and 2001. In 2000, fungi were isolated from 82.7% of samples, while in 2001 from as many as 95.4%. There were 28 species representing genera: Candida, Cryptococcus, Geotrichum, Kloeckera, Rhodotorula, Saccharomyces, and Trichosporon. The most common species were Rhodotorula glutinis and Candida guilliermondii. The density of the population of identified species depended on the season and sampling site and ranged from 80 to 328000 cells/dm3 (also uncountable growth). The waters of the Sulejów Reservoir may be a covenient place of anamorphic developmental forms, for the 15 cultured species which can also propagate in humans and other mammals.
