Interdisciplinary researching: exploring the opportunities and risks of working together.

The aim of this paper is to explore the issues that present both opportunities and risks when working in an interdisciplinary research project. As the research context changes in the social reform environment, some scientists suggest it is time to forge new scientific working relationships, to open up the boundaries between disciplines. Interdisciplinary research is an alternative approach for nurses who might develop different ways of working with health researchers from other disciplines. The ideas in this paper come from a larger, grounded theory study on interdisciplinary teamwork. The changing research context, the meaning of interdisciplinary working, collaboration, and competence, integrating different disciplinary perspectives, interprofessional learning opportunities, and the relevance for nurses are explored in relation to interdisciplinary researching. Interdisciplinary researching is complex and potentially risky; however, it does offer nurses the opportunities for professional growth, development, and research work satisfaction. Many nurses are already well-trained researchers and might consider developing roles as interdisciplinary research project managers as well.

Cardiac pain or panic disorder? Managing uncertainty in the emergency department.

Emergency department admissions for chest pain might be related to a psychological problem, such as panic. Panic disorder adversely affects the person's lifestyle, general health, and psychological well-being. Panic disorder is difficult to recognize, so nursing assessment and management of these clients is important. This paper presents research findings from a New Zealand study that explored emergency nurses' differentiation of non-cardiac chest pain from panic disorder and raised significant issues in the nursing assessment and management of such clients. The data were gathered from focus group interviews and were analyzed thematically. Three themes, prioritizing time, managing uncertainty and ambiguity, and the life-threatening lens, were identified. The findings confirm that a panic disorder is not always diagnosed when biomedical assessment is used in isolation from a psychosocial assessment. Emergency nurses are pivotal in reversing the cycle of repeat presenters with non-cardiac chest pain. Recommendations for assessing and managing this complex condition are presented.

Designing a grounded theory study: some practicalities.

Grounded theory is an interpretative research methodology frequently used by social science researchers seeking to discover the underlying social processes shaping interaction. The methodology is useful to create knowledge about the behavioural patterns of a group. The aim of this paper was to discuss some practical issues that the prospective grounded theory researcher planning a small-scale project may consider. Discussion focuses on the basic premises, choosing a version of grounded theory, the research problem, the purpose of study, the research question and the place of the literature in a study. The specific skills required of the grounded theory researcher are considered and some cautions are exercised. The paper may assist student researchers in a critical care setting and may be of interest to their supervisors and experienced. grounded theory researchers.
