Selective molecularly imprinted polymer obtained from a combinatorial library for the extraction of bisphenol A.

In the present work, an analytical methodology based on molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction (MISPE) has been developed for the determination of bisphenol A (BPA) in environmental and food samples. In order to select the optimum material, a combinatorial library of molecularly imprinted polymers in small-scale (mini-MIPs) was prepared using BPA as template. Different monomers (methacrylic acid or 4-vinylpyridine), crosslinkers (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate or trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate) and porogens (methanol, acetonitrile or toluene) were used leading to 24 different polymerisation mixtures. After BPA removal, the ability of mini-MIPs to recognise BPA was evaluated by equilibrium rebinding-elution experiments. The copolymer of 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP) and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TRIM) prepared in toluene showed the higher affinity for the template. Subsequently, a scaled-up version of the optimum polymer was prepared and used in the development of MISPE procedures for the extraction of BPA. The optimised MISPE protocols were successfully applied to the selective extraction of BPA from soils and aqueous canned peas samples.

Molecular imprinting technology in capillary electrochromatography.

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are tailor-made synthetic polymers with a predetermined selectivity for a given analyte, or group of structurally related compounds, that make them ideal materials for use as stationary phases in affinity chromatography. However, extensive peak broadening and tailing, especially of the more retained compound (normally the template) are often observed. Thus, huge efforts have been made during recent years to use MIPs in capillary electrochromatography, which is inherently a more efficient chromatographic technique than conventional HPLC. Accordingly, this paper gives an overview of the attempts carried out in the recent past to improve the chromatographic performance of MIPs in capillary electrochromatography as well as more recent applications. It is concluded that MIPs are very promising materials for use as selective stationary phases in CEC.

Assessment of the cross-reactivity and binding sites characterisation of a propazine-imprinted polymer using the Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm.

In this paper, the Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm is used to model the interaction of several triazines (desethylatrazine, desisopropylatrazine, simazine, atrazine, propazine and prometryn) with a propazine-imprinted polymer and to explain the observed cross-reactivity. Different rebinding experiments (each herbicide alone or all together in a mixture) were carried out and the experimental binding isotherms were fitted to the Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm. The fitting coefficients obtained (total number of binding sites, mean binding affinity and heterogeneity index) allowed the description of the kind of binding sites present in the imprinted polymer under study. It was concluded that the recognition mechanism was mainly governed by the molecular size although slight differences in the molecular structure may also play an important role. The obtained results suggest that the use of this new methodology can open new pathways for understanding how molecular recognition in imprinted polymers takes place.
