Suture foreign body granuloma masquerading as renal neoplasm.

Foreign body granulomas and pseudotumors due to retained surgical linen are well known in surgical practice. These lesions usually correspond to the actual size of residual foreign body and have characteristic presentation according to the anatomy involved. Renal suture granuloma is a rare postoperative complication of renal surgery due to persistence of sutures used to close the pelvicalyceal system/nephrotomy incisions and usually present as incidentally detected small mass lesions. This case of a suture foreign body granuloma presenting with hematuria, large peripheral mass lesion and characteristic computed tomography picture of renal cell carcinoma confounded the diagnosis and underwent laparoscopic radical nephrectomy. In retrospect, such lesions warrant the use of selective needle biopsy and intraoperative frozen section confirmation to clinch diagnosis. Mass lesions occurring in a previously operated kidney should have granuloma as a differential diagnosis.

Constitutive expression of hyaluronan binding protein 1 (HABP1/p32/gC1qR) in normal fibroblast cells perturbs its growth characteristics and induces apoptosis.

Hyaluronan binding protein 1 (HABP1) is a ubiquitously expressed multifunctional phospho-protein that interacts with a wide range of ligands and is implicated in cell signalling. Recently, we have reported that HABP1 is an endogenous substrate for MAP kinase and upon mitogenic stimulation it is translocated to the nucleus in a MAP kinase-dependent manner (Biochem. Biophys. Res. Commun. 291(4) (2002) 829-837). This prompted us to investigate the role of HABP1 in cell growth or otherwise in low MAP kinase background. We demonstrate that HABP1, when overexpressed in normal rat skin fibroblasts, remained in the cytosol, primarily concentrated around the nuclear periphery. However, HABP1 overexpressing cells showed extensive vacuolation and reduced growth rate, which was corrected by frequent medium replenishment. Further investigation revealed that HABP1 overexpressing cells undergo apoptosis, as detected by TUNEL assay, induction of Bax expression, and FACS analysis, and they failed to enter into the S-phase. Periodic medium supplementation prevented these cells from undergoing apoptotic death. We also demonstrate that upon induction of apoptosis in HeLa cells by cisplatin, HABP1 level is upregulated, indicating a correlation between HABP1 and cell death in a normal cellular environment.

Value-added food: single cell protein.

The alarming rate of population growth has increased the demand for food production in third-world countries leading to a yawning gap in demand and supply. This has led to an increase in the number of hungry and chronically malnourished people. This situation has created a demand for the formulation of innovative and alternative proteinaceous food sources. Single cell protein (SCP) production is a major step in this direction. SCP is the protein extracted from cultivated microbial biomass. It can be used for protein supplementation of a staple diet by replacing costly conventional sources like soymeal and fishmeal to alleviate the problem of protein scarcity. Moreover, bioconversion of agricultural and industrial wastes to protein-rich food and fodder stocks has an additional benefit of making the final product cheaper. This would also offset the negative cost value of wastes used as substrate to yield SCP. Further, it would make food production less dependent upon land and relieve the pressure on agriculture. This article reviews diversified aspects of SCP as an alternative protein-supplementing source. Various potential strains and substrates that could be utilized for SCP production are described. Nutritive value and removal of nucleic acids and toxins from SCP as a protein-supplementing source are discussed. New processes need to be exploited to improve yield. In that direction the solid state fermentation (SSF) method and its advantages for SCP production are highlighted.
