Non-Gibbsian stochastic light-mode dynamics of passive mode locking.

We study a stochastic light-mode system with non-Gibbsian steady state statistics, unravelling global nonequilibrium phase transition properties. It relates to the onset of passive mode-locking in the general case of lasers with arbitrary dispersion and Kerr nonlinearity that includes the nonsolitonic regime. The solution is facilitated by a special stationarity criterion imposed by the system gain balance. We show that the mode-locking phase transition is generic, and give exact expressions for the pulse power and its stability map. We find that at the boundary of the mode-locking stability the pulse power is exactly one half of the total intracavity power, and that the parameter region for the most resistant pulses against noise destabilization is not at the soliton condition.

Role of many-electron dynamics in high harmonic generation.

High harmonic generation (HHG) in many-electron atoms is studied theoretically. The breakdown of the frozen-core single active electron approximation is demonstrated, as it predicts roughly the same radiation amplitude in all noble gases. This is in contradiction with experiments, where heavier noble gases are known to emit much stronger HHG radiation than lighter ones. This experimental behavior of the noble gases can be qualitatively reproduced when many-electron dynamics, within a simple approximation, is taken into account.

Three-step model for high-harmonic generation in many-electron systems.

The three-step model (TSM) of high-harmonic generation (HHG) is generalized to atomic and molecular many-electron systems. Using many-body perturbation theory, corrections to the standard TSM due to exchange and electron-electron correlations are derived. It is shown that canonical Hartree-Fock orbitals represent the most appropriate set of one-electron states for calculating the HHG spectrum. To zeroth order in many-body perturbation theory, a HHG experiment allows direct access, in general, to a combination of occupied Hartree-Fock orbitals rather than to the highest occupied molecular orbital by itself.

Quantitative modeling of single atom high harmonic generation.

It is shown by comparison with numerical solutions of the Schrödinger equation that the three step model (TSM) of high harmonic generation (HHG) can be improved to give a quantitatively reliable description of the process. Excellent agreement is demonstrated for the H atom and the H2(+) molecular ion. It is shown that the standard TSM heavily distorts the HHG spectra, especially of H2(+), and an explanation is presented for this behavior. Key to the improvement is the use of the Ehrenfest theorem in the TSM.

Experimental study of the stochastic nature of the pulsation self-starting process in passive mode locking.

We present an experimental study of the probabilistic nature of pulsation self-starting in passively mode-locked lasers. It is a Poissonian process that results from a noise-activated switching barrier. The switching rate from cw operation to pulsation when the laser pump level is turned on has an exponential dependence that is inversely proportional to the square of the laser power.

Critical behavior of light in mode-locked lasers.

Light is shown to exhibit critical and tricritical behavior in passively mode-locked lasers with externally injected pulses. It is a first and unique example of critical phenomena in a one-dimensional many-body light-mode system. The phase diagrams consist of regimes with continuous wave, driven parapulses, spontaneous pulses via mode condensation, and heterogeneous pulses, separated by phase transition lines that terminate with critical or tricritical points. Enhanced non-Gaussian fluctuations and collective dynamics are present at the critical and tricritical points, showing a mode system analog of the critical opalescence phenomenon. The critical exponents are calculated and shown to comply with the mean field theory, which is rigorous in the light system.

Solution of a statistical mechanics model for pulse formation in lasers.

We present a rigorous statistical-mechanics theory of nonlinear many mode laser systems. An important example is the passively mode-locked laser that promotes pulse operation when a saturable absorber is placed in the cavity. It was shown by Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 103901 (2002)] that pulse formation is a first-order phase transition of spontaneous ordering of modes in an effective "thermodynamic" system, in which intracavity noise level is the effective temperature. In this paper we present a rigorous solution of a model of passive mode locking. We show that the thermodynamics depends on a single parameter, and calculate exactly the mode-locking point. We find the phase diagram and calculate statistical quantities, including the dependence of the intracavity power on the gain saturation function, and finite size corrections near the transition point. We show that the thermodynamics is independent of the gain saturation mechanism and that it is correctly reproduced by a mean field calculation. The outcome is a new solvable statistical mechanics system with an unstable self-interaction accompanied by a natural global power constraint, and an exact description of an important many mode laser system.

Formation and annihilation of laser light pulse quanta in a thermodynamic-like pathway.

We present a theoretical and experimental study of multiple pulse formation in passively mode-locked lasers. Following a statistical-mechanics approach, the study yields a thermodynamic-like "phase diagram" with boundaries representing cascaded first order phase transitions. They correspond to abrupt creation or annihilation of pulses and a quantized rf power behavior, as system parameters (noise and/or pumping levels) are varied, in excellent accordance with the experiments. Remarkably, individual pulses carry an almost constant quantum of energy.

Statistical-mechanics theory of active mode locking with noise.

Actively mode-locked lasers with noise are studied employing statistical mechanics. A mapping of the system to the spherical model (related to the Ising model) of ferromagnets in one dimension that has an exact solution is established. It gives basic features, such as analytical expressions for the correlation function between modes, and the widths and shapes of the pulses [different from the Kuizenga-Siegman expression; IEEE J. Quantum Electron. QE-6, 803 (1970)] and reveals the susceptibility to noise of mode ordering compared with passive mode locking.

Inhibition of modulation instability in lasers by noise.

It is shown that additive noise can inhibit modulation instability in laser equations of motion. A related self-starting condition for pulsation is obtained by employing a fluctuation--dissipation relation between noise and losses and a statistical mechanics approach. Entropy considerations are shown to play a crucial role. The quantum limit for self-starting is estimated.

Phase transition theory of many-mode ordering and pulse formation in lasers.

A novel theory for the ordering of many interacting modes in lasers is presented. By exactly solving a Fokker-Planck equation for the distribution of waveforms in the laser in steady state, equivalence of the system to a canonical ensemble is established, where the role of temperature is taken by amplifier noise. Passive mode locking is obtained as a phase transition of the first kind and threshold is calculated, employing mean field theory backed up by a numerical study. For zero noise, compliance with the existing noiseless theory is shown.
