Characterizing strange nonchaotic attractors.

Strange nonchaotic attractors typically appear in quasiperiodically driven nonlinear systems. Two methods of their characterization are proposed. The first one is based on the bifurcation analysis of the systems, resulting from periodic approximations of the quasiperiodic forcing. Second, we propose to characterize their strangeness by calculating a phase sensitivity exponent, that measures the sensitivity with respect to changes of the phase of the external force. It is shown that phase sensitivity appears if there is a nonzero probability for positive local Lyapunov exponents to occur. (c) 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Local Lyapunov exponents for spatiotemporal chaos.

Local Lyapunov exponents are proposed for characterization of perturbations in distributed dynamical systems with chaotic behavior. Their relation to usual and velocity-dependent exponents is discussed. Local Lyapunov exponents are analytically calculated for coupled map lattices using random field approximation. Boundary Lyapunov exponents describing reflection of perturbations at boundaries are also introduced and calculated.

The simplest case of chaotic wave scattering.

We consider scattering of nondispersive linear waves on a discrete nonlinear element. The problem reduces to the dynamics of a forced damped nonlinear oscillator. Chaotic motions of the oscillator produce chaotic reflected and transmitted waves.
