Variational calculation of the limit cycle and its frequency in a two-neuron model with delay.

We consider a model system of two coupled Hopfield neurons, which is described by delay differential equations taking into account the finite signal propagation and processing times. When the delay exceeds a critical value, a limit cycle emerges via a supercritical Hopf bifurcation. First, we calculate its frequency and trajectory perturbatively by applying the Poincaré-Lindstedt method. Then, the perturbation series are resummed by means of the Shohat expansion in good agreement with numerical values. However, with increasing delay, the accuracy of the results from the Shohat expansion worsens. We thus apply variational perturbation theory (VPT) to the perturbation expansions to obtain more accurate results, which moreover hold even in the limit of large delays.

Analytical and numerical investigations of the phase-locked loop with time delay.

We derive the normal form for the delay-induced Hopf bifurcation in the first-order phase-locked loop with time delay by the multiple scaling method. The resulting periodic orbit is confirmed by numerical simulations. Further detailed numerical investigations demonstrate exemplarily that this system reveals a rich dynamical behavior. With phase portraits, Fourier analysis, and Lyapunov spectra it is possible to analyze the scaling properties of the control parameter in the period-doubling scenario, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Within the numerical accuracy there is evidence that the scaling constant of the time-delayed phase-locked loop coincides with the Feigenbaum constant delta approximately 4.669 in one-dimensional discrete systems.

High-order variational perturbation theory for the free energy.

In this paper we introduce a generalization to the algebraic Bender-Wu recursion relation for the eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions of the anharmonic oscillator. We extend this well known formalism to the time-dependent quantum statistical Schrödinger equation, thus obtaining the imaginary-time evolution amplitude by solving a recursive set of ordinary differential equations. This approach enables us to evaluate global and local quantum statistical quantities of the anharmonic oscillator to much higher orders than by evaluating Feynman diagrams. We probe our perturbative results by deriving a perturbative expression for the free energy, which is then subject to variational perturbation theory as developed by Kleinert, yielding convergent results for the free energy for all values of the coupling strength.

Variational perturbation theory for Markov processes.

We develop a convergent variational perturbation theory for conditional probability densities of Markov processes. The power of the theory is illustrated by applying it to the diffusion of a particle in an anharmonic potential.
