Levels of serologic markers of celiac disease in patients with reflux esophagitis.

AIM: To investigate the prevalence of celiac disease serologic markers (antigliadin IgA, IgG, and anti-endomysial IgA) in patients with reflux esophagitis and to detect the relationship between reflux esophagitis and celiac disease (CD). METHODS: This study was performed prospectively between January 2003 and January 2004. Sixty-eight adult reflux esophagitis patients and 40 people as control group for symptoms related with gastrointestinal system were enrolled in this study. The diagnostic work-up included an accurate medical history with gastrointestinal symptoms, routine laboratory measurements, the detection of antibodies against gliadin (IgA and IgG) and endomysium (IgA), and an upper endoscopy with postbulbar biopsy. RESULTS: IgA-AGA and IgG-AGA were positive at 8.8% and 10.3% in patients with reflux esophagitis. In control group, it was found that 10% people had positive IgA-AGA, and 7.5% people had positive IgG-AGA. There was no significant relationship between patients and control group regarding positive IgA-AGA and IgG-AGA. The patients and persons in control group had no positive IgA-EMA. On postbulbar biopsies, no finding was detected concerning celiac disease. There were no symptoms and signs for gluten enteropathy in patients and control group. CONCLUSION: This review supports that an association does not exist between celiac disease and reflux esophagitis. We think these diseases exist independently from each other.

Hyperbaric oxygen enhances the efficiency of 5-aminosalicylic acid in acetic acid-induced colitis in rats.

The aim of this study was to assess the efficiency of hyperbaric oxygen alone and in combination with 5-aminosalicylic acid in the acetic acid-induced colitis model, a well-known experimental model of inflammatory bowel disease in rats. Rats were randomly divided into five groups. In the noncolitis control group, rats were given isotonic saline, while in the other groups rats were treated by intracolonic administration of 4% acetic acid. In group 2, the untreated control group, no additional therapy was applied. In groups 3, 4, and 5 hyperbaric oxygen, 5-aminosalicylic acid. and 5-aminosalicylic acid + hyperbaric oxygen therapies were applied, respectively. Administration of acetic acid caused an inflammatory response in all animals. Histopathologic score was significantly higher in group 2 than in any other group. 5-Aminosalicylic acid and hyperbaric oxygen significantly decreased the histopathologic score (P < 0.05). Myeloperoxidase activity was also reduced significantly by 5-aminosalicylic acid (P < 0.05) but not by hyperbaric oxygen. The most prominent ameliorative effect, however, was seen in group 5 and the histopathologic score and myeloperoxidase activity were significantly lower than in groups 3 (P < 0.05) and 4 (P < 0.001). Hydroxyproline level also increased significantly in group 5, but not in groups 3 and 4 (P < 0.001). These findings indicate that hyperbaric oxygen therapy is effective in reducing the extent of colitis induced by acetic acid, although it is not as potent as 5-aminosalicylic acid. The combination of hyperbaric oxygen and 5-aminosalicylic acid, however, led to a much more prominent reduction in the severity of colitis. Hyperbaric oxygen may have a promising place in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.

Diffuse pulmonary amyloidosis that mimics interstitial lung disease in a patient with familial Mediterranean fever.

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autosomal-recessive disorder characterized by recurrent attacks of fever, serositis, and arthritis. Amyloidosis, which mostly affects the kidneys, represents the most serious complication of the disease. The lungs, particularly after the onset of renal failure, may be asymptomatically involved in some of the patients with AA amyloidosis secondary to FMF. However, clinically detectable pulmonary amyloidosis is quite rare, and only 2 cases of pulmonary amyloidosis secondary to FMF have been reported so far. We describe a patient with pulmonary amyloidosis who had pulmonary hypertension and presented with clinical and radiologic features highly suggestive of interstitial lung disease. Amyloidosis was diagnosed only after lung biopsy. FMF was confirmed by molecular analysis.

Abdominal heterotopic tissues: review of 24 cases diagnosed on postoperative histological evaluation.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Heterotopy is defined as abnormal localization of well-differentiated tissue. Heterotopic tissues usually tend to be asymptomatic and noncomplicated but sometimes may cause serious clinical problems. Malignancy potential is the most important issue in this clinical entity. In this study we reviewed medical records of 24 patients with heterotopic tissues. METHODS: Between 1995-2004, 24 patients with heterotopic tissues who were diagnosed during gastrointestinal system or abdominal wall surgery or upper gastrointestinal endoscopy were included in this study. Patients' medical data were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Sixteen patients with heterotopy were younger than 30 years and eight patients were older than 30 years. Nineteen (0.21%) heterotopic tissues were diagnosed in 8,945 patients who underwent gastrointestinal system surgery or upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, whereas five (0.21%) heterotopic tissues were diagnosed in 2,320 patients who underwent abdominal wall surgery. Overall, 24 (0.21%) heterotopic tissues were found in a total of 11,265 patients. The majority were pancreatic heterotopy, followed in decreasing order by gastric, adrenal and osseous heterotopy. In patients who underwent gastrointestinal surgery-endoscopy, pain was the main symptom (n=13)(68.4%), followed by dyspepsia (n=3)(15.7%) and vomiting- nausea (n=2)(10.5%). The main symptom in patients who underwent abdominal wall surgery was palpable mass. heterotopic tissues presented as wall thickening in 13, polypoid mass in five and whole solitary mass or intraparenchymal lesion in six patients. CONCLUSION: Although incidence of heterotopic tissues is low, in case of its suspicion or diagnosis, early treatment should be performed by surgical or endoscopic resection or patients must be followed up carefully due to risk of malignancy.

The feasibility of neoadjuvant high-dose chemotherapy and autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation in patients with nonmetastatic high grade localized osteosarcoma: results of a phase II study.

BACKGROUND: The primary and secondary objectives of the current study were to improve the > or = 90% tumor necrosis rate and assess the toxicity profile of the neoadjuvant high-dose chemotherapy (HDC) regimen, respectively. METHODS: Twenty-two patients with AJCC Stage IIB high-grade osteosarcoma were included in the current study. Two cycles of an induction chemotherapy regimen including cisplatin, doxorubicin, and ifosfamide followed by HDC and autologous peripheral blood stem cell support or transplantation (APBSCT) were given. After engraftment was achieved, the patients underwent limb-sparing surgery (LSS) followed by three to six cycles of postoperative chemotherapy depending on the tumor necrosis rate. RESULTS: The median follow-up, the total duration of treatment, and the time to surgery were 23.7 months, 5.96 months, and 3.03 months, respectively. The necrosis rate was at least 90% in 82% of the cases. The 3-year overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) rates were 83% and 70%, respectively. Leukopenia, anemia, thrombocytopenia, nausea and emesis, and mucositis were the most frequent Grade 3 and Grade 4 toxicities (according to the National Cancer Institute Common Toxicity Criteria [version 2.0]) of induction, high-dose, and adjuvant chemotherapies. At the time of last follow-up, no patient had died of chemotherapeutic toxicity. LSS was performed in all patients. Surgery-related complications were reported in 3 of 22 patients. Functional scoring results were excellent in eight patients, good in nine patients, fair in two patients, and poor in three patients. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the current Phase II study suggest that neoadjuvant HDC provides a greater than 90% necrosis rate with acceptable toxicity. A short duration of therapy and the feasibility of LSS in all patients are additional advantages of this approach.

Contribution of flavonoid antioxidants to the preventive effect of mesna in cyclophosphamide-induced cystitis in rats.

Cyclophosphamide (CP) is widely used, alone or in combination with other chemotherapeutic agents, for treatment of neoplastic diseases. Its urotoxicity may cause dose-limiting side-effects, for example hemorrhagic cystitis. The agent most often used to prevent this side-effect is mesna (2-mercaptoethane sulfonate). Overproduction of reactive oxygen species during inflammation is one reason for possible urothelial injury. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether combinations of quercetin and epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG), flavonoid antioxidants and mesna could prevent cystitis induced by cyclophosphamide, better than mesna alone. A total of 38 male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five groups. Four groups received single dose of CP (100 mg kg(-1)) intraperitoneally at the same time. Group 2 received CP only, group 3 received mesna (3 x 21.5 mg kg(-1)), group 4 received a single dose of mesna+EGCG (2 x 20 mg kg(-1)), and group 5 received a single dose of mesna+quercetin (2 x 20 mg kg(-1)), before and after CP injection. Group 1 (not treated) served as control. CP injection alone resulted in severe cystitis. Mesna resulted in some, but not full, protection against CP toxicity. Quercetin and catechine, together with mesna, resulted in full protection against CP toxicity, on the basis of histopathology of the urinary bladder. It was concluded that oxidants might be important in the pathogenesis of CP-induced cystitis, and that flavonoid antioxidants, used in addition to mesna, may help to ameliorate bladder damage.

Elevated urine neopterin levels in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to relate urine levels of neopterin, a marker of activation of the cellular immune system, with grading and staging of NASH. DESIGN AND METHODS: Urine concentrations of neopterin, routine tests, insulin and C-peptide levels were assessed in 50 patients with NASH, 25 patients with chronic viral hepatitis (CVH), and in 26 healthy controls. RESULTS: Urine neopterin levels were found elevated in the NASH and CVH groups compared with controls. There was no significant correlation between urine neopterin levels and inflammation grade in the liver. CONCLUSIONS: Urine neopterin levels are a marker of cellular immunity and are higher in patients with NASH. However, neopterin levels were not significantly associated with histopathological grade and stage of disease.

High resolution computed tomographic features of pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis (PAM) is a rare, chronic lung disease with unknown etiology and with a nonuniform clinical course. Nonuniformity of clinical course might be related to the degree of pulmonary parenchymal alterations, which can be revealed with high resolution computed tomography (HRCT). However, HRCT findings of PAM were not fully described in the current literature. AIM: The aim of this study was to interpret and to contribute to describe HRCT findings of PAM and to investigate a correlation between profusion of micro nodules (MN) and pulmonary parenchymal alterations in patients with PAM. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten male patients with PAM (mean age: 22+/-3.2) were included into the study. HRCT images were assessed for patterns, distribution, and profusion of pulmonary abnormalities. Dividing the lungs into three zones, profusion of abnormalities was assessed. A profusion score (1-4) was given and the scores of each zone were then summed to obtain a global profusion score for HRCT ranging from 0 to 12. Also a parenchymal alteration score (PAS) was defined with respect to profusion of abnormalities. Chest X-rays were also scored. RESULTS: All of ten patients with PAM had findings of interstitial lung disease in varying degrees on their HRCTs. HRCT findings of patients with PAM were as following: MN, parenchymal bands (PB), ground glass opacity (GGO) and, sub pleural interstitial thickening (SPIT) in 10 patients; interlobular septal thickening (ILST), in 9 patients; paraseptal emphysema (PSA) in 8 patients; centrilobular emphysema (CLA) in 7 patients; bronchiectasis (BE), confluent micro nodules (CMN) in 6 patients; peri bronchovascular interstitial thickening (PBIT) in 5 patients; panacinar emphysema (PANAA) in 3 patients; pleural calcification (PC) in 2 patients. A significant correlation between MN scores and PAS (r=0.68, p=0.031, MN scores and GGO scores (r=0.69, p=0.027) and, MN scores and CLA scores (r=0.67, p=0.034) was detected. We also found significant correlations between HRCT scores and results of pulmonary function tests (PFTs), HRCT scores and chest X-ray score (CXRS) and, CXRS and results of PFTs. CONCLUSION: We conclude that patients with PAM may have all findings of interstitial lung disease in varying degrees as well as MNs on their HRCTs. More importantly, this study suggests a proportional relationship between profusion of MNs and parenchymal alterations in patients with PAM. This study also suggests that the degree of parenchymal alterations closely related with the degree of pulmonary function loss in patients with PAM.

A custom-made distraction device for experimental mandibular distraction osteogenesis.

Distraction osteogenesis has recently become popular in craniofacial reconstruction, after it was first described for long bones. Despite the widespread clinical use of this technique, currently, lack of an ideal experimental model for small animals hampers investigations focused on its molecular basis, which warrants further elucidation. The authors developed a new device for distraction of the rat mandible and, to asses its effectiveness, practiced on 30 animals assigned to either an acute 3-mm distraction group (n = 7) or a gradual distraction group (0.25 mm twice a day for 6 days; n = 23). The authors applied the devices to a localization that allowed them to perform the ostomies posterior to the molar teeth. Because of a U-shaped plate that the authors used for posterior pin fixation, their device maintained its stability until the end of the study, despite the delicate anatomy of the bone at the posterior part of the mandible. Additionally, the authors described a practical and easy method of transient mandibular stabilization method that facilitates the manipulations while the mouth is open for safer airway control during surgery. This new nutrition technique with enteral feeding solution solved the problem of progressive weight loss after surgery. Application of the device was easy and practical, without demanding complex manipulations. The authors did not observe any device dislodgement or a high rate of accidental fractures during the manipulations. They demonstrated that the device works properly and is able to create ossified regenerate bones that fill the entire distraction gap, which can be used for various investigations during distraction osteogenesis.

Elevated plasma homocysteine concentrations as a predictor of steatohepatitis in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Although steatosis is common in patients with severe hyperhomocysteinemia due to deficiency of cystathionine beta-synthase, there are no satisfactory data on homocysteine concentrations in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The main aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical significance of plasma homocysteine concentrations in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. METHODS: Seventy-one non-alcoholic fatty liver disease patients, 36 patients with chronic viral hepatitis and 30 healthy persons were enrolled in the study. Homocysteine levels were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography. Insulin, folate, vitamin B(12) and lipoprotein levels were also determined in all groups. RESULTS: Homocysteine in the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease group was found to be significantly higher than other groups. Homocysteine was found to be significantly higher in the non-alcoholic steatohepatitis group when compared with simple steatosis group. A positive correlation was found between homocysteine and triglyceride, very-low-density-lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol, insulin, and index of insulin resistance in the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease group, and a negative correlation was found between homocysteine and folate, or vitamin B(12) in all groups. The homocysteine threshold for the prediction of steatohepatitis was 11.935 ng/mL. Furthermore; plasma homocysteine was a statistically significant predictor for severity of necroinflammatory activity in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. CONCLUSIONS: The plasma homocysteine concentrations were significantly higher in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, while the concentrations were not affected by chronic viral hepatitis. Plasma homocysteine is a parameter for discriminating steatohepatitis from simple steatosis. Determining the plasma homocysteine concentrations may facilitate selection of steatosis patients in whom a liver biopsy should be performed.

Increased acylation stimulating protein concentrations in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease are associated with insulin resistance.

OBJECTIVES: As acylation stimulating protein (ASP) acts on adipocytes mainly as a paracrine factor to increase triglyceride synthesis and storage; hypothetically, it may play a similar role in the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). METHODS: Forty-six male patients with NAFLD (group A), age-matched 30 male patients with chronic viral hepatitis (group B) and 30 age-matched and body mass index (BMI)-matched healthy male subjects were enrolled in the study. RESULTS: Among the NAFLD patients, 10 patients (24.4%) had simple steatosis and 36 patients (69.6%) had nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The mean levels of ASP, complement 3, insulin, C-peptide, HOMA-IR, triglyceride, and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) were significantly higher in group A patients than both controls and group B. ASP levels correlated significantly in a positive manner with BMI, insulin, and HOMA-IR. CONCLUSIONS: Dysregulation of the ASP pathway may have important metabolic consequences in NASH and is associated with insulin resistance.

Systemic markers of lipid peroxidation and antioxidants in patients with nonalcoholic Fatty liver disease.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to examine the systemic parameters of oxidative stress and antioxidants in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and investigate the relationship between these parameters and clinical and biochemical outcomes. METHODS: Fifty-one male patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (group I), 30 age-matched and body mass index (BMI)-matched healthy male subjects, and 30 age-matched male patients with chronic viral hepatitis (group II) were enrolled in the study. RESULTS: Increased systemic levels of malondialdehyde and depletion of antioxidants such as coenzyme Q10, CuZn-superoxide dismutase, and catalase activity were observed in group I. Coenzyme Q10 and CuZn-superoxide dismutase correlated negatively with increasing necroinflammatory activity and fibrosis. Body fat was negatively associated with plasma coenzyme Q10 levels, while an inverse association was found between plasma catalase levels and TG. However, LDL was positively associated with plasma malondialdehyde levels. CuZn-superoxide dismutase levels were negatively associated with glucose, insulin, and HOMA-IR. In addition, the levels of CuZn-superoxide dismutase correlated significantly in a negative manner with BMI. CONCLUSIONS: Our results concerning correlations suggest that disturbances in BMI, body fat, and lipid metabolism may contribute to altered oxidative status in NAFLD, and insulin resistance may be related to decreased antioxidants in NAFLD as well as products of lipid peroxidation. However, although our results suggest interesting correlations, this different mostly "weak" relationships must be taken with caution.

The bisphosphonate zoledronic acid inhibits the development of plasmacytoma induced in BALB/c mice by intraperitoneal injection of pristane.

OBJECTIVES: Bisphosphonates (BPs) are mostly used in the palliative care of myeloma-associated osteolytic lesions. Recent studies have suggested that BPs may also exert direct antitumor effects on myeloma cells. We have investigated the effect of the potent bisphosphonate, zoledronic acid (ZOL), on the development of pristane (2,6,10,14-tetramethylpentadecane)-induced plasmacytoma (PCT) in six-week-old BALB/c mice. METHODS: Different groups of pristane-treated mice also received ZOL (100 microg/kg) commencing after the development of PCT or ZOL (20 microg/kg) from the first day. Control groups received pristane alone, ZOL alone (20 microg/kg), or phosphate-buffered saline. The study was terminated on day 300, and the remaining mice were autopsied and abdominal tissues were examined histologically for PCT. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Statistical analysis revealed a significant delay in PCT development in the group receiving pristane plus ZOL (20 microg/kg) from the first day compared to the groups receiving pristane alone and pristane combined with ZOL (100 microg/kg) after the appearance of PCT (Log-rank, P = 0.0001 and 0.0001; respectively). Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed a significant difference in survival between the group treated with pristane alone and the groups receiving pristane plus ZOL (20 microg/kg) from the first day or ZOL (100 microg/kg) after the appearance of PCT (Log-rank, P = 0.016 and 0.023; respectively). These results indicate a direct anti-tumor effect of ZOL in pristane-induced PCT development BALB/c mice, which may contribute to their significantly increased survival. This hypothesis should now be further investigated in clinical trials.

Protective effects of valproic acid against hypoxic-ischemic brain injury in neonatal rats.

Although controversial, protective and therapeutic effects of valproic acid in various types of cellular injury suggest a potential role for this agent in hypoxic-ischemic brain injury. We therefore investigated the effects of valproic acid in an experimental model of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injury. To examine the effect of valproic acid in this condition, hypoxic-ischemic brain injury was induced in 7-day-old rat pups by ligation of the right common carotid and then the pups were exposed to 1 hour of hypoxia in 8% oxygen. Low (200 mg/kg/day) and high (400 mg/kg/day) doses of valproic acid were administered in a 5-day regimen. Neuropathologic evaluation was performed using the hippocampus, cerebral cortex, and basal ganglia in the coronal plane. The 5-day regimen of valproic acid administration resulted in some protective and therapeutic effects on the brain damage and neuronal apoptosis in both hemispheres in a dose-dependent manner. Administration of valproic acid also decreased the percentage of apoptotic neurons in the contralateral hemisphere (P < .05). These results suggest that valproic acid can have therapeutic and protective effects in hypoxic-ischemic brain injury.

Prognostic value of GLUT-1 expression in ovarian surface epithelial tumors: a morphometric study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the reported increase in the expression of the glucose transporter GLUT-1 in borderline and malignant ovarian epithelial tumors and its relationship to prognosis. STUDY DESIGN: In this study, areas in which immunohistochemical membranous staining with GLUT-1 were most evident were selected, and the proportions of GLUT-1 expression in 46 benign, 11 borderline and 42 malignant cases of ovarian epithelial tumors were determined quantitatively with a computer and Zeiss Vision KS 400 3.0 (Göttingen, Germany) for Windows (Microsoft, Redmond, Washington, U.S.A.) image analysis. RESULTS: GLUT-1 expression was determined in all borderline tumors (11 of 11) and in 97.6% of malignant tumors (41 of 42). No GLUT-1 expression was observed in benign tumors. The intensity of GLUT-1 staining was lower in borderline tumors than in malignant cases. This was statistically significant (p = 0.005). As differentiation in malignant tumors increased, proportions of GLUT-1 expression showed a relative increase, but this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.68). CONCLUSION: When GLUT-1 expression in borderline and malignant ovarian epithelial tumors was analyzed against prognosis, no statistically significant difference was identified. Assessment of GLUT-1 expression using the image analysis program was more reliable, with higher reproducibility than in previous studies.

Contribution of antioxidants to preventive effect of mesna in cyclophosphamide-induced hemorrhagic cystitis in rats.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether combination of antioxidants and mesna may prevent cystitis induced by cyclophosphamide better than mesna alone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 46 male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into six groups. Five groups received single dose of cyclophosphamide (CP, 100 mg/kg) intraperitoneally with the same time intervals: group 2 received CP only, group 3 received mesna (21.5 mg/kg for three times), group 4 beta-carotene (20 mg/kg for two times) and mesna, group 5 received alpha-tocopherol (20 mg/kg for two times) and mesna, and group 6 received melatonin (5 mg/kg for two times) and mesna on the day of CP injection. Group 1 served as control. RESULTS: CP injection resulted in severe cystitis. Mesna has showed meaningful but not full protection against CP toxicity. Although beta-carotene did not show any additional beneficial effect when combined with mesna, alpha-tocopherol and especially melatonin with mesna resulted full protection that the pathologist, blinded to the slides, could not differ from sham control. CONCLUSION: Oxidants may be important in the pathogenesis of CP-induced cystitis. Melatonin and alpha-tocopherol may help to ameliorate bladder damage along with other drugs such as mesna and diuretics.

Effect of mesalazine, metronidazole and gentamicin on bacterial translocation in experimental colitis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: In inflammatory bowel disease it has been established that enteric microorganisms are present in the final stage of the active inflammatory process. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of mesalazine, and metronidazole-gentamicin combination, on bacterial translocation in an animal colitis model. METHODS: Fifty rats were stratified into five groups. The control group (group NC) was given only 2 mL saline enema and the remaining four groups were given 2 mL acetic acid enema. Group CC was the diseased control group. The treatment regimens started on the fifth day: mesalazine enema in group MesC, metronidazole-gentamicin in group MGC, and mesalazine + metronidazole + gentamicin in group MesMGC. After death on day 10, 2.5-cm colonic segments from all groups were weighed separately. In all rats, histopathological scoring was done, and samples from feces, blood, liver and spleen underwent microbiological analyses. RESULTS: For all diseased rats, both mean weight loss and colonic segment weight/bodyweight ratio was significantly higher than that in the sham group. As compared with other groups, body and colonic segment changes as well as histopathological scoring in rats receiving mesalazine enema either solely or in combination with the antibiotics were lower. No bacterial growth was found in the blood, liver and spleen of the rats in the control group while enteric bacteria, mainly Escherichia coli (35%) were the most common bacteria translocated to that in the latter. Antibiotic combination, alone or in combination with mesalazine was effective in reducing the bacterial translocation while mesalazine administration did not properly influence its regression. CONCLUSIONS: Gram-negative enteric bacteria, predominantly E. coli, was the most common bacteria isolated in bacterial translocation occurring in acetic acid-induced colitis. This trial showed that mesalazine alone did not incorporate the reduction of infectious events, despite its beneficial effect on inflammatory changes in experimental colitis. Metronidazole and gentamicin combination given intraperitoneally was more effective than topical mesalazine in decreasing bacterial translocation.
