As discussed here, HCFA mortality information is not a simple index of hospital performance. The data included are just one indicator of patient outcome for just one group of the total in-patient hospital population. With growing public interest in the quality of healthcare, however, it is in a hospital's best interest to analyze HCFA mortality data and respond to public inquiries regarding quality of care.
