The nature of leisure in the lives of older adults with intellectual disability.
The purpose of this study was to examine the nature of leisure in a sample of older adults with intellectual disability. Twenty-nine older adults participated in indepth interviews. An interview guide was utilized which included topics relating to leisure participation and social interaction in a variety of environments. Data were analysed according to the constant comparative method. The most pronounced theme that emerged from the data was lack of self-determination in leisure. Participants had few opportunities to freely choose leisure in any aspect of their lives. In many cases, opportunities for self-determined leisure were further constricted by age-related changes in the participants' lives.
Validity and reliability of the Leisure Assessment Inventory.
The validity and reliability of the Leisure Assessment Inventory, a tool developed to measure leisure behavior as it applies to adults with mental retardation, was examined. Leisure behavior was assessed using four indexes: Leisure Activity Participation, Leisure Preference, Leisure Interest, and Leisure Constraints. The inventory was administered to 92 adults, ages 30 and older, with mild to moderate mental retardation. Two indexes (Leisure Activity Participation and Leisure Interest) demonstrated higher reliability from test to retest whereas the remaining two (Leisure Preference and Leisure Constraints) showed only moderate consistency. Overall findings provide evidence of the inventory's stability, consistency, convergent and discriminant validity, and construct validity.
Depression and dementia in aging adults with Down syndrome: a case study approach.
Patterns of symptoms associated with depression and dementia were examined in 3 aging adults with Down syndrome. A case study approach (Yin, 1994) was employed to identify and link these symptoms. Results of the case analyses provide further insight into distinguishing between depression and dementia in older persons with Down syndrome.
Validity and reliability of a Five Dimensional Life Satisfaction Index.
Validity of the Five Dimensional Life Satisfaction Index (Hawkins, Eklund, Kim, & Greene, 1994), which was developed to measure life satisfaction as it applies to adults with mental retardation, was examined. The index was administered to 48 adults with moderate mental retardation. Results showed (a) alternate forms reliability and internal consistency, (b) convergent and discriminant validity, and (c) construct validity.

Planning processes and outcomes for an aging population with developmental disabilities.
Needs analysis research and planning projects were reviewed for the purpose of identifying planning concepts, processes, outcomes, and issues regarding the growing population of older adults with developmental disabilities. Themes and issues identified through a content analysis of planning reports and documents were presented along with goals for future planning and public social policy development efforts.
Aging and developmental disabilities: interagency planning for an emerging population.
In 1987 the Indiana Task FOrce on Aging and Aged Persons with Developmental Disabilities was formed to address interagency planning and public policy issues related to this newly emerging population. Data were collected from major state agencies now serving either the aged or individuals with developmental disabilities to assess the portion of the population currently receiving services. These data were compared to population projections for 1990. Service needs in health care, residential services, day programming, and other support areas were identified. We discuss direct planning outcomes and indirect process outcomes related to increased interaction among state-agency employees.
