[Monkeys as subjects for study of immunobiological preparations].

The parameters of colon microbiocenosis were evaluated in healthy animals belonging to 6 species of marmosets; its disorders typical of patients with different forms of acute intestinal infections were revealed. Bifidoflora of young monkeys was characterized. The study demonstrated multiple similarities of the microflora of monkeys and humans, including small children. A preclinical study of dry bifidin, a probiotic, revealed its advantages over the commercial bifidumbacterin. 90 monkeys were used for preclinical evaluation of complex immunoglobulin preparation (CIP) and a combination of CIP with interferon (kipferon in suppositories). The study demonstrated sanifying and microflora-normalizing effects, increase of anti-microbial antibodies and serum interferon after both parenteral and rectal administration. The protective activity of a new variant of the probiotic Acilact in exposure to ionizing radiation and anticancer chemotherapy under experimental conditions

[Immune and interferon status of primates].

The authors of the article have first determined standards of interferon (IFN) status of healthy primates (M. mullatta) belonging to different age groups, such as serum IFN, spontaneous IFN production, IFN-a and IFN-y production. They showed that old healthy primates have low ability of IFN-a and IFN-y production and high serum IFN level. The parameters of IFN status were compared to the number of B- and T-lymphocytes and their subpopulations; qualitative evaluation of protective properties of young and old healthy primates' immunity was carried out.

Immunophenotypical characteristics of permanent cultures of lymphoid cells from Papio hamadryas and Macaca arctoides.

Immunophenotypical characteristics of primate cells were studied by enzyme immunoassay and flow cytofluorometry using a panel of monoclonal antibodies to human B- and T-lymphocyte antigens. Specific features of immunophenotype of cultured cells were detected. Simian lymphoid cultures consist of a mixture of B- and T-cells with mosaic antigenic structure expressing markers of B and T cell specificity.

Age-associated changes in hormonal function of the pancreas and regulation of blood glucose in monkeys.

Age-associated changes in the concentrations of glucose, insulin, and DHEAS in peripheral blood plasma of female rhesus macaques were studied in intact animals and in response to a standard dose of glucose and insulin. Basal levels of insulin and glucose increased, insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance decreased, and pancreatic reaction to glucose load was impaired in old monkeys. Insulin level positively correlated with glucose concentration, body weight, and abdomen circumference and negatively correlated with DHEAS level.

Age-related endocrine dysfunction in nonhuman primates.

Peculiarities of functioning of some parts of the endocrine system (the pineal gland, pancreatic gland, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis) in an aging nonhuman primate model (Papio hamadryas and Macaca mulatta) are described in this article. It has been established that basal activity of some endocrine functions (glucocorticoid, corticotropic, pancreatic, male estradiol producing) varies little with age. Other functions significantly decrease (DHEA/DHEAS-producing, pineal, testicular) or increase (male gonadotropic) with age. In contrast with basal activity, pronounced age-related changes in response to specific stimuli were detected in all endocrine functions. Old baboons and rhesus monkeys exhibited a delay of the normalization of the pituitary-testicular axis, adrenal cortex, and pancreatic gland function after their activation in response to specific stimuli, such as LHRH, CRH, ACTH, and glucose. Old monkeys also demonstrate decreased HPA axis sensitivity to glucocorticoid regulation by negative feedback and the HPT axis to inhibitory effect of prolonged administration of LHRH agonist. Age-related changes in reactions of endocrine functions in response to specific stimulating and inhibiting stimuli indicate impaired resiliency of these functions. Age-related endocrine changes perhaps play a pathophysiological role in age function disorders of hormonocompetent tissues and organs and age pathology.

[Infectious pathology of monkeys: a brief description, potential experimental research, safety for attendants at primate care facilities and laboratories].

Infectious diseases of monkeys, including the bacterial anthroponosous and zoogenous as well as viral infections, are described in the paper. A bulwark of research resulted from authors' independent long-term observations of monkey pathologies at Sukhumi and Adler primatological facilities. Pathologies are elucidated, which are better to be modeled in monkeys; there are also diseases that can be studied only in monkeys. Monkey agents were isolated, which are dangerous to humans attending the animals at primatological facilities and laboratories.

Spontaneous infection of lower primates with hepatitis C virus.

We present serological and virological evidence of spontaneous infection in Old World lower monkeys with human hepatitis C virus or, maybe, antigenically related but genetically different simian virus strain. These data is of both theoretical and practical importance and can serve as the basis for further development of experimental model of hepatitis C on lower monkeys.

Age-associated endocrine dysfunctions and approaches to their correction.

This review discusses age-specific functional changes in different components of the endocrine system (pituitary, epiphysis, adrenals, and gonads), their role in aging and age-specific diseases, and possible approaches to correction of endocrine disorders and prevention of accelerated aging.

Changes of hormonal function of the adrenal and gonadal glands in baboons of different age groups.

The purpose of this study was to characterize the changes of hormonal function of the adrenals and gonads during aging in male baboons (Papio hamadryas). Basal levels of plasma dehydroepiandrosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, pregnenolone, and 17-hydroxypregnenolone progressively decrease with age from 10-15 years when analyzed by specific radioimmunoassay. However, no significant changes were found in cortisol and 11-desoxycortisol concentrations. The levels of sexual hormones did not differ in young and mature groups. In the 20-26-year-old animals, the concentration of testicular androgens showed a tendency to decrease, while the concentration of biologically active luteinizing hormone (LH) showed a tendency to increase. The old animals exhibited a decrease of plasticity of the pituitary testicular system, which was manifested in the deceleration of the decrease of LH and T concentrations after the peak values had been reached in response to luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) administration. The oldest male also developed some refractoriness of the pituitary gonadal system to the prolonged administration of LHRH agonist. The hormonal imbalance which develops with age may play an important role in the age-related involutional process.

A summary is provided of the major operations required to conduct the wide range of primate experiments on the Bion 11 mission, which flew for 14 days beginning December 24, 1996. Information is given on preflight preparations, including flight candidate selection and training; attachment and implantation of bioinstrumentation; flight and ground experiment designs; onboard life support and test systems; ground and flight health monitoring; flight monkey selection and transport to the launch site; inflight procedures and data collection; postflight examinations and experiments; and assessment of results.

[Cytogenic characteristics and virogenic status of lymphoid cells from malignant baboon lymphomas].

Four lymphoid cell cultures obtained from Papio hamadryads with malignant lymphomas were studied. The cultured cells produced two lymphotropic EBV-like herpes virus of Papio (HVP) and T-lymphotropic monkey retrovirus STLV-1 (HTLV-1 family) or HVP alone. More than 100 subcultured cell lines were shown to remain mixed B- and T-cellular, the levels of T cells of different subpopulations were 15-50%. Cytogenetic investigations showed that one of the 4 cultures was tumorogenic and the others were derived from the normal cells of monkeys with malignant lymphomas. It is suggested that the presence of a cultural virus (viruses) may affect the karyotypes of cells.
