Induction of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis in the NIH minipig.

Experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) was induced in the NIH minipig to create a large animal model of multiple sclerosis with a well-characterized immune system. Sixteen NIH minipigs were inoculated with minipig spinal cord homogenate (SCH). The clinical course was primarily monophasic, but re-induction was possible. CNS and blood lymphocytes specifically proliferated to SCH. Flow cytometry of CNS-isolated cells and SCH-stimulated PBMC revealed a shift to CD4(+) CD8(+) cells. Pathology demonstrated demyelination in the CNS white matter with perivascular mononuclear cell infiltrates of CD3(+)CD4(+)CD45(+) lymphocytes with a subset CD8(+). Pathology and in vitro SCH responses implicate a central role of CD4(+) lymphocytes in swine EAE.

Intracoronal esthetic splinting.

Splinting is a well-accepted clinical treatment that has been us many years to control irreversible tooth mobilities through mechanical stabilization. With contemporary demands for quality-of-life dentistry, extracoronal or unesthetic splints can fall short of patient expectations. This article examines the rationale and technique for placing an intracoronal esthetic splint when full coverage restorations are no indicated or desired. This type of splint using bondable ceramic ropes is imperceptible both visually and to the patient's tongue, lips, and cheeks proprioceptively.

Principles of esthetics.

Attaining the highest clinical level of cosmetic dentistry necessitates the development of artistic talents. Although some historical discussion is found in the literature, little has been written on the marriage of artistic theory and clinical illusions. An understanding of this relationship allows the clinician to design a smile or modify a flawed display artistically so that the patient may perceive it as more attractive. I introduced to the literature a framework for understanding artistic principles as they relate to clinical cosmetic dentistry, ie, shaping teeth and creating illusions (Singer, In Esthetic Dentistry: A Clinical Approach to Techniques and Materials. Lea & Febiger; 1993:5-13). The concepts of cultural and artistic perceptual biases and the law of the face are explained and illustrated. To enhance their further understanding, clinicians are encouraged to study related fields of beauty enhancement.

Defensiveness in exhibitionists.

Focuses on the excessive defensiveness and the psychodynamic factors that typify many exhibitionists. After reviewing some of the literature describing the marked guardedness of these offenders, a detailed discussion follows of the Rorschach protocol of an exhibitionist revealing his core emotional conflicts. These test results illustrate the value of the Rorschach in eiliciting material that in many cases would be difficult to obtain because of these patients' characteristically suspicious and defensive stance concerning their offense and their personal lives. The case demonstrates the significant role of psychological testing in the forensic process, particularly for defensive, less verbal, and unpsychologically-minded offenders.
