Colonization of Lactobacillus acidophilus in gnotobiotic chicks.

Germ-free chicks hatched in flexible film gnotobiotic isolators were dosed orally at 2 days of age with a pure culture of Lactobacillus acidophilus. The chicks monoassociated with L. acidophilus were killed at 2 weeks of age to obtain gastrointestinal tract specimens for histological sectioning. Both light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were performed to determine colonization and adhesion of lactobacilli. This strain of L. acidophilus was found associated with epithelium from three segments of the gastrointestinal tract (crop, proventriculus, and duodenum) of the gnotobiotic chick. The electron micrographs showed not only a close relationship between the Lactobacillus organism and the crop epithelia, but also an attachment through physical contact.

In vivo inhibitory effects of Lactobacillus acidophilus against pathogenic Escherichia coli in gnotobiotic chicks.

Chicks were hatched germfree in gnotobiotic isolators to determine the inhibitory effects of Lactobacillus acidophilus towards pathogeneic Escherichia coli in vivo. Twelve trials were conducted in two flexible film isolators utilizing a total of 221 chicks. One treatment consisted of inoculating 2-day-old chicks with L. acidophilus, then challenging with pathogenic E. coli with subsequent dosing with L. acidophilus. The other treatment consisted of challenging with the E. coli at 2 days of age, then subsequently dosing with L. acidophilus. Statistical analysis of the data showed initial dosing with L. acidophilus prevented excessive mortality when chicks were challenged with E. coli. Also, continued dosing with L. acidophilus lowered the pH in the crop, cecum, and rectum whether chicks were initially given L. acidophilus or E. coli. This strain of L. acidophilus was capable of competing with E. coli in the gut of gnotobiotic chicks.

Level of education, diagnosis and race-related differences in MMPI performance.

MMPIs were obtained from eight groups of black and white, schizophrenic and nonschizophrenic, and highly educated and poorly educated psychiatric patients. Profiles were classified blindly by use of two rules (Sc greater than 70; Sc greater than PT). All but poorly educated blacks were classified correctly beyond a chance level. Almost half of the poorly educated black nonschizophrenics were misclassified as schizophrenic. Implications for diagnostic work were discussed.

Bioactive fatty acids: role in bone biology and bone cell function.

Bone is a unique tissue providing support, movement, and mineral balance for the body. Bone growth is achieved in the young by a process called modeling, and maintained during adulthood by a process termed remodeling. Three types of cells are responsible for the formation of cartilage and bone; the chondrocyte, osteoblast, and osteoclast. These cells are under the influence of a plethora of regulatory molecules, which govern their action to provide an individual optimal bone mass. Interruption of this homeostatic machinery, especially in the elderly, often results in a loss of bone mass (osteoporosis) or cartilage damage (rheumatoid arthritis). Many pharmacological agents have been made available in an effort to prevent or alleviate these pathologies, however, one vector often overlooked is the diet. This review focuses on the relationship between dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids and bone biology, both in vivo and in vitro.

Antigenic expression by cells derived from human gliomas does not correlate with morphological classification.

We have found that cell populations derived from human gliomas can be divided into antigenic classes which are not predictable on the basis of standard morphological analysis and which, most frequently, do not support the lineage assignations of various tumours as determined by traditional neuropathological methods. For example, only 6/60 cultures derived from astrocytomas expressed glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), an astrocyte specific marker, and all six of these cultures were derived from morphological categories which more frequently gave rise to populations which did not express GFAP. None of the seven oligodendrogliomas or four oligo-astrocytomas examined expressed antigens specifically expressed by oligodendrocytes. Most tumour-derived populations, from all classes of tumour and all grades of malignancy, expressed cell-surface fibronectin, an extracellular matrix protein only rarely found on the surfaces of CNS macroglia; such cells did not express glial-specific antigens (e.g., GFAP) in vitro. Investigation of antigen expression in tumour biopsies indicated that some tumours also consisted largely or wholly of cells which expressed fibronectin in situ. Fibronectin-expressing cells were aneuploid and were not contact inhibited in their growth, indicating that they were transformed cells. We have also identified two previously unknown antigenic phenotypes among the gliomas.
