The relationship between skinfold thicknesses, body circumferences, plasma lipids and glucose in the elderly.

A total of 699 inhabitants of Ljubljana (269 men and 430 women) aged over 60 years were examined. Weight and height were measured, the body mass index (g/cm2) was summed, skinfold thickness on 14 sites (biceps, abdomen /on the right side/, subscapular, suprailiacal, thigh, calf, lower arm /on the right and left side/) and 8 body circumferences (chest, abdomen, upper arm, thigh and calf /on the right and left side/) were determined. Fasting venous blood was taken for determining plasma glucose, total plasma cholesterol, triglycerides and HDL-cholesterol. Plasma cholesterol, both in men and women, is not associated with predictors of fatness - skinfold thicknesses and body circumferences. There are statistically significant correlations between plasma triglycerides and predictors of fatness, particularly in the body, both in men and women. The correlation of plasma HDL-cholesterol is inversely proportional to the predictors of fatness (circumferences and skinfold thicknesses) at the central and peripheral sites of the subcutaneous fat, in both sexes. Relations between plasma glucose and parameters of fatness (body circumferences) are weak and less frequent. They are noticed only in the female population. Body circumferences, predictors of fatness and the distribution of body fat can be as good factors as skinfold thicknesses in the population aged over 60 years.

Vitamin E status in men and women aged 60-90 years.

The vitamin E status in men and women aged 60-90 years (62 men and 124 women) was examined. Plasma free vitamin E was analysed according to a modified version of the Hansen and Warwich method--a fluorometric micromethod for serum tocopherol. Serum cholesterol, triglycerides and HDL-cholesterol were quantified by the enzymatic methods on a Computer Directed Analyzer. Anthropometric data included the measurement of 13 skinfold thickness dimensions and Quetelet's index of obesity computed from weight (in g) and height (in cm2). The distribution of plasma free tocopherol level ranged from 10 mumol/1 to 69.9 mumol/1 for men and from 20 mumol/1 to 64.9 mumol/1 for women (median: 40-44.9 mumol/1 for both groups). Using the range of 12-46 mumol/1 free tocopherol of the plasma as the criterion, 78.5% of the subjects were classified as having the optimal vitamin E status. With the total free tocopherol levels above 49.9 mumol/1 of plasma, 21.5% of the subjects had an over average vitamin E status. It has also been found that there were correlations between the total free plasma tocopherol and plasma lipids (plasma triglycerides, plasma cholesterol, in men and women) and HDL-cholesterol in the male population.

Beneficial hemorheologic therapy of chronic peripheral arterial disorders with pentoxifylline: results of double-blind study versus vasodilator-nylidrin.

Pentoxifylline (Trental 400 mg coated tablets) and nylidrin HCl 3 mg were compared for clinical efficacy and safety in an 8-week randomized double-blind trial. The study was conducted in patients with peripheral arterial disease (Fontaine stage II or III), with 30 patients receiving pentoxifylline (23 returned for follow-up), and 30 patients receiving nylidrin HCl (24 returned for follow-up). Efficacy was assessed objectively in terms of walking performance (absolute walking time and walking distance on a treadmill ergometer) and by acral plethysmography. The clear improvement shown for both variables was greater and statistically significant (p less than or equal to 0.05) after treatment with pentoxifylline. Laboratory data provided no evidence to suggest any adverse effect of either treatment. Subjective side effects were reported by six patients in the pentoxifylline group and by three patients in the nylidrin HCl group.

Influence of moderate and strenuous daily physical activity on fibrinolytic activity of blood: possibility of plasminogen activator stores depletion.

Fibrinolysis was studied in 10 alpinists during regular physical activity of different intensity. Blood was sampled at rest and after exposure to submaximal workload on the treadmill on three occasions: before and after 6 months physical conditioning (moderate physical activity), and after 6 weeks of an alpinistic expedition (strenuous physical activity). Measurements included submaximal working capacity, fibrinogen, euglobulin clot lysis time (ELT), whole plasma clot lysis time, and estimations derived from ELT--percent increase in fibrinolytic activity after exercise (RFS), and absolute increase in fibrinolytic activity after exercise (PAR). Regular moderate activity increased the resting level of ELT, but strenuous activity decreased is. After each treadmill testing, a marked increase in fibrinolytic activity was observed. RFS was unaltered at all three testings. PAR increased after moderate activity, but decreased after strenuous activity. The results indicate that regular physical activity can lead from enhanced to decreased resting activity of plasminogen activator in blood. It is presumed that increased release of activator during prolonged stress causes partial depletion of endothelial stores with the consequence of decreased activator activity in the blood.
