Serum trypsin inhibitory capacity and alpha 1-antitrypsin levels in liver cirrhosis and hepatoma.

alpha 1-Antitrypsin levels were measured in sera of 134 patients with cirrhosis and in 64 with cirrhosis and hepatoma. S-TIC was determined in 105 patients with cirrhosis and in 54 with cirrhosis and hepatoma. The mean alpha 1-at and S-TIC values in patients with cirrhosis were 369.59 +/- 14.072 mg% and 1,808 +/- 0.05 mg/ml respectively. In patients with cirrhosis and hepatoma the mean alpha 1-at level was 406.595 +/- 17.834 mg% and the S-TIC mean values was 2.064 +/- 0.82 mg/ml. Although these values are higher than those found in the healthy controls, the differences are not statistically significant.

Serum levels and alpha1-antitrypsin phenotypes in active pulmonary tuberculosis.

alpha1-at phenotypes and serum levels were studied in 100 Greek patients of pulmonary TBC by starch-gel electrophoresis and radial immunodiffusion. The mean value of alpha1-at (315 +/- 77) was significantly lower (p less than 0.005) than in the control group. An attempt is made to explain this finding based on the alpha1-at phenotypes distribution in the TBC patients.

The incidence of gallstones in Greece; an autopsy study.

In the fifty-year period, from 1925 to 1974, 6596 autopsies were performed at three departments of Pathology in Athens. The incidence of gallstones was 5.97% in the total material. The incidence in females was 8.86% and in males 4.52%, with a ratio 2:1. An increase of the incidence has been noticed since 1925. Under the presented data Greece could be included among the countries with an intermediate frequency of gallstones, but with a tendency to follow the Western countries pattern. The significance of the Greek standard of living and the dietary surveys on the gallstone formation, are briefly discussed.

Alpha 1-antitrypsin phenotypes in cirrhosis and hepatoma.

The phenotypic distribution of alpha-1-antitrypsin variants has been studied in 101 patients with cirrhosis and in 50 with cirrhosis plus hepatoma. 504 healthy Greeks served as controls. The ZZ and MZ phenotypes were found only once in the group of cirrhosis. The very low PiZ gene frequency suggests that the association of PiZ gene with cirrhosis is fortuitous. The FM phenotype has been observed in 14% of patients with hepatoma arised on cirrhosis and this incidence differed significantly between the two groups of patients and the controls. It is possible that cirrhotic patients phenotypically FM develop for as yet unknown reasons hepatoma in high percentage.

Distribution of Gm and Inv factors in two samples of the Greek population.

Gm and Inv polymorphism has been investigated on a sample of the general Greek population (N = 256) and on a sample of the Achaia population of Northwestern Peloponnusus (N = 150). The estimated frequencies were, respectively in the two groups: Gm1, 0.156 vs. 0.180; Gm1,2,0.010 vs. 0.017; Gm4,12, 0.834 vs. 0.803; Inv (+1), 0.125 vs. 0.140.

The red cell acid phosphatase polymorphism in Greek b-thalassemia patients.

Red cell acid phosphatase polymorphism was studied by starch gel electrophoresis in 70 b-thalassemia patients and in 310 healthy Greeks. Our results gave the following gene frequencies; b-thalassemia patients: pa 0.321, pb 0.643, pc 0.036; healthy Greeks: pa 0.302, p b 0.653, pc 0.045. No statistically significant differences were found between the two groups.
