Young boys who commit serious sexual offenses: demographics, psychometrics, and phenomenology.

This study reports on a population of early adolescent male sexual offenders 9 to 14 years of age compared with a clinic control group matched for age, sex, ethnic status, and the presence of a DSM-III-R conduct disorder. The sex offenders were found to exhibit a significant history of nonsexual antisocial behavior, physical and sexual abuse, and psychiatric comorbidity. The two groups did not differ in number and category of comorbid psychiatric diagnoses, the number of nonsexual aggressive and nonaggressive symptoms of conduct disorder, symptoms of major depressive disorder or dysthymia, and symptoms of anxiety disorders. The EGTC group demonstrated significantly lower mathematic achievement. There is evidence that sexual offending behavior in this population is one aspect of a pattern of antisocial behavior. Sixty-five percent of the index group had a history of early sexual victimization.

Effects of acute inhalation of the bronchodilator, albuterol, on power output.

This study was designed to examine the effects of acute inhalation of the bronchodilator, albuterol (Proventil, Schering Corp.), on high intensity power output. Fifteen healthy nonasthmatic subjects (eight male, seven female, 18-33 yr) performed four supramaximal 15-s rides on a bicycle ergometer. Rides were arranged in pairs with a 10-min rest interval. Each pair of rides was preceded by a 5-min warm-up. Sessions were separated by a minimum of 48 h. The study design was fully randomized and double blind. Ten minutes prior to each pair of rides subjects inhaled two metered doses (180 micrograms) of albuterol (A) or a placebo (P). Individual ANOVAs revealed a significant difference between the A and P treatment for peak power (A = 886.6 W, P = 858.3 W) and fatigue (A = 27.2%, P = 24.4%). Mean changes in FEF25-75% (A = 0.712, P = 0.040 l.s-1), FEV1.0 (A = 0.188, P = 0.007 l), and PEF (A = 0.573, P = -0.155 l.s-1) were also statistically significant; however, these changes did not correlate to the anaerobic performance changes. No significant differences were found between treatments for heart rate increases resulting from the power test (A = 56.73 bpm, P = 53.20 bpm). These results indicate an ergogenic effect of the bronchodilator on short-term power output independent of impact on respiratory smooth muscle, with no effect on cardiac response.

Development of a differential volume reactor system for soil biodegradation studies.

A bench scale experimental system was developed for the analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) degradation by mixed microbial cultures in PAH contaminated Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) soils and on sand. The reactor system was chosen in order to provide a fundamental protocol capable for evaluating the performance of specific mixed microbial cultures on specific soil systems by elucidating the important system variables and their interactions. The reactor design and peripherals are described. A plug flow differential volume reactor (DVR) was used in order to remove performance effects related to reactor type, as opposed to system structure. This reactor system could be well represented mathematically. Methods were developed for on-line quantitative determination of PAH liquid phase concentrations. The mathematical models and experimental data are presented for the biodegradation of naphthalene on artificial and MGP soils.

An investigation of somatic anxiety and intelligence in children using the Kaufman-ABC and an Apple IIe program measuring heart rate.

Somatic anxiety during intelligence testing was examined for 43 children in Grades K through 5 by assessing each child's heart rate with an Apple IIe computer program during an administration of the Kaufman-ABC. Heart rate (a measure of somatic anxiety) decreased steadily during the course of the test administration, except for an increase when the one timed subtest (Triangles) was administered. Heart rate during each separate subtest did not correlate significantly with performance on any task. Implications of these preliminary findings are discussed.

Effects of background event rate on sustained attention of mentally retarded and nonretarded adults.

Mentally retarded and nonretarded adults performed four, 60-minute visual vigilance tests in which single digits were presented at either a fast or slow rate. The target event was a "skipped" digit. During two tests the event rate shifted without warning to the alternate event rate after 30 minutes of the vigil. Retarded observers detected fewer targets and made more false alarms than did nonretarded observers in all test conditions. Shifts in event rate influenced the frequency of false alarms made by retarded observers. The differences in performance of retarded and nonretarded adults favor a memory deficit explanation.

Molecular diagnostics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon biodegradation in manufactured gas plant soils.

Traditional methods for quantifying specific catabolic bacterial populations underestimate the true population count due to the limitations of the necessary laboratory cultivation methods. Likewise, in situ activity is also difficult to assess in the laboratory without altering the sample environment. To circumvent these problems and achieve a true in situ bacterial population count and activity measurement, new methods based on molecular biological analysis of bacterial nucleic acids were applied to soils heavily contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). In addition, a naphthalene-lux reporter system was used to determine bioavailability of naphthalene within these soils. DNA extracted from seven PAH-contaminated soils and hybridized with the nahA gene probe indicated that the naphthalene degradative genes were present in all samples in the range of 0.06 to 0.95 ng/100 microliters DNA extract which was calculated to represent 3.2 x 10(6) to 1.1 x 10(10) cells/g soil (assuming one copy of these genes per cell). 14C-naphthalene mineralization was observed in all contaminated soils with 14CO2 mineralization rates ranging from 3.2 x 10(-5) to 304,920.0 x 10(-5) micrograms g soil-1 h-1. Phenanthrene, anthracene, and benzo(a)pyrene were mineralized also in several soils. Messenger RNA transcripts of nahA were isolated and quantified from 4 soils. Only one soil tested, soil B, was inducible with salicylate above the in situ nahA gene transcript level. Two of the soils, C and G, were already fully induced in situ. The naphthalene mineralization rate correlated positively with the amount of nahA gene transcripts present (r = 0.99). Naphthalene was bioavailable in soils A, D, E, G, and N as determined by a bioluminescent response from the naphthalene-lux reporter system. Taken together, these data provided information on what the naphthalene-degrading bacterial population was experiencing in situ and what approaches would be necessary to increase activity.
