The child abuse program in a child guidance center.

This paper is a case example of how one private child guidance clinic responded to problems of child abuse seen in the clinic and how the center moved from the "micro-level" of treating individual victims and their families to the "macro-level" of education and community involvement. The authors show how case-by-case treatment of abused families can be used as a guide for program development and community education.

Multiple calculi within noncommunicating pyelogenic renal cyst.

Multiple calculi were found within a cystic renal mass, which had no apparent communication with the renal collecting system. Radiography, sonography, and surgical examination suggested a serous cyst of the kidney. Histopathology proved the cyst to be pyelogenic origin. The origin and differences of serous and pyelogenic cysts of the kidney are discussed.

The psychological abuse of latency age children: a survey.

Most states have included sections on psychological abuse or emotional maltreatment in their child abuse statutes, however, interest in this type of abuse has lagged in litigation, treatment, or research. Lack of public sanctions to examine or prosecute these cases may be a reason for this reluctance. This research project aimed at identifying potential definitions of psychological abuse, by submitting vignettes with adult behaviors to be rated as abuse or not by a group of citizens and also comparing these results with a professional social work cohort. Both groups identified nine types of adult behavior to be abuse. There was no difference on the ratings between respondent groups (citizen-social work; age groups, experience with child abuse, and parenthood), except for gender. Female respondents rated the vignettes to be child abuse, serious, and wanted more drastic intervention than male respondents. Support existed for intervention in these cases.
