Incidence of anaerobic bacterial infection following transurethral instrumentation.

Total 300 patients undergoing transurethral instrumentation had their urine culture for aerobic and anaerobic organism pre-operatively and post-operatively. An increase in the incidence of anaerobic urinary tract infection from 2% pre-operatively to 14% post-operatively following transurethral instrumentation was documented. It was concluded that transurethral instrumentation increases the incidence of anaerobic urinary tract infection and patients having symptoms of urinary tract infection following such procedures with sterile urine for aerobic bacteria should be studied and treated appropriately for anaerobic urinary tract infection.

Prevalence of bacterial prostatitis in benign prostatic hyperplasia.

To define the prevalence of bacterial prostatitis and urinary tract infection (U.T.I) among benign prostatic hyperplasia patients (B.H.P) undergoing prostatectomy trans urethral resection of prostate (T.U.R.P.), 100 consecutive patient has their preoperative and post-operative urine cultures along with tissue culture of the resected prostatic tissue. Our data suggests that significant incidence (42%) of bacterial growth in prostatic tissue-occurs in patients with B.H.P. Pre-existing U.T.I. is not a reliable indicator by which this group could be identified pre-operatively and prostatic infection could be treated.

Unipapillary kidney: a case report.

Congenital anomalies constitute a large proportion of clinical practice in urology, while the unipapillary kidney is a rarity. It is associated with significant morphological or functional abnormalities of the urinary system. We report on a unipapillary kidney and review the literature.

Gunshot wounds of the male external genitalia.

The explosive increase of violence in our society has imposed hazards of gunshot injuries on the civilian population. The genitourinary system is no longer exempted from such assaults. Although male external genitalia are amongst less commonly involved organs, in a span of 14 months, 4 such cases were managed at our institute. Our experience of such injuries is being highlighted so as to draw attention to their increasing incidence and association with injuries of other organs. Three patients had haemorrhagic shock at initial presentation. They were managed by resuscitation, debridement and repair of wounds Urethral injuries were dealt initially by diversion and subsequently urethroplasty was performed. In a follow-up of 6-12 months, all the patients were reported to be having normal erections and none of them have developed urethral stricture.

Zoon's balanitis.

Superficial lesions of the glans penis can cause diagnostic difficulties. Zoon's balanitis can be distinguished by characteristic histological changes affecting the epidermis and the dermal vasculature. A 44-year-old male presented after having blood-staining of his underclothes for 5 months. Upon examination, the glans showed a red, moist plaque. Circumcision was performed, and the biopsy showed plasma cell balanitis. Following circumcision, the lesion healed completely.
