[The materials and border-zone micromorphology of a glass-ionomer cement cavity lining material].

The combination of various possibilities for sample preparation and investigation--the tinting penetration method, the ion beam slope cutting, the light and scanning electron microscopy--allow statements at the grind after different drying of the preparation mainly to the bond but also surface and filler shape of glass-ionomer cements. The dentine in the area of enamel-dentine-junction and of superficial root area is effectively closed by Ketac-Bond. Likewise, the bond with cover filling (Visio-Molar) can be considered without gaps except a single case. Crack propagations from the cement surface seem to related to pores and occur independently of type of drying especially in case of mechanical after treatment of already hardened cavity lining [correction of underfilling] material.

[Clinical basic documentation in surgery].

Clinical basic documentation allows a cost lowering and personal saving application of modern data processing technology within the clinical routine. The concept presented in this article has been successful for ten years. Soon after its installation this documentation provides its user with valuable data for internal quality control. Listings of diagnosis, surgical procedures, length of stay and frequencies of complications can be created without extensive knowledge of data processing and computer programming. Based on this concept special documentations for statistical analysis of certain patient groups or diseases are easily established.

[10 years of dental care of hemophiliacs].

Increased consciousness of oral hygiene, improvement of sanitation degree and decrease of the number tooth extractions have been proved a success and an expression of high compliance within the scope of long-term interdisciplinary care of haemophilic patients. At the same time both patients registration and concentration at an out-patient department facilitate cooperation with the paediatricians and internal specialists being in charge of them, in addition a change-over from children to adult dispensary care is ensured. Haemophilic patients suffering from hepatitis B or HTLV-III/HIV antibodies carrier may be registered immediately. All patients undergoing dispensary care are subject to preventive test obligations.

[Polarization microscopic studies of the dental enamel margin diagonal following the use of various preparation instruments and an etching gel].

The composite enamel bond considerably depends on mechanical produced surface beside the chemical conditioning. Polarization microscopic investigations at thin planes let recognize different profiles of surfaces, variations of medium etching depths and variable frequencies of enamel fractures in the area of enamel margin bevel after application of a preparing diamond cutter, a finishing diamond cutter, a wound geared tungsten carbide finisher and the combination of a preparing diamond cutter with a tungsten carbide finisher on the same conditioning with an etching gel of 37% phosphoric acid. The only application of a wound geared tungsten carbide finisher is not indicated if the enamel etch technique is used. There the combination of a preparing diamond cutter with a tungsten carbide finisher proved a success both relating to profiles of enamel bevel after acid etching, small disturbed enamel structure and as to clinical handling.

[Clinical morphology of bond zone in bonding agent composite systems].

Three composites--Colténe DRS, P-10, Silux--and their bonding agents (enamel bond systems, Scotchbond) have been investigated. To this purpose the usual examination of "margin close" according to Lutz in 1977 was modified in "morphology of bond zone" (bm). After one year the phosphonated bonding agents has shown better results dependent on composites than enamel bond systems. A year later the "bons zoné's morphology" of various composites did not differ from another because P-10 underlied a heavy occlusal wear. In spite of that the phosphonated bond to enamel has proven better results than to dentin. Replication technique was applied in some chosen cases with clinical acceptable bond zones.

[Mortality and rate of low birth weight in multiple pregnancies--some statistical problems].

By means of statistical methods there will be demanded the increased rate of prematures and mortality of multiple pregnancies. Mortality by birthweight and percentiles by birthweight to gestational age are used at this study. The special position of multiple pregnancies has been discussed and compared with singletons related to the different distribution of birthweight and the associated problems.

Characterization of proteins associated with hepatitis delta virus.

The number and size of proteins associated with hepatitis delta virus (HDV) from serum and liver (human, chimpanzee and woodchuck) in the acute and chronic stages of HDV infection were analysed by immunoblotting. HDV particles in serum were separated from serum proteins by gel filtration and peak fractions of HDV antigens were subjected to PAGE. Immunoblotting with human anti-HDV-positive sera and 125I-labelled Protein A revealed two bands of 27K and 29K. It was not possible to identify any core-like structure from liver homogenates by CsCl gradient centrifugation. HDV proteins from such gradients were degraded to a size of 14K as determined by immunoblotting. HDV RNA was found in fractions at a density of 1.5 g/ml. However, direct homogenization of liver tissue in gel electrophoresis sample buffer, followed by PAGE and immunoblotting resulted in identification of HDV-associated proteins of 27K and 29K, indicating that HDV proteins in liver tissue are the same size as those in serum, but that they degrade rapidly. There was no difference in size of HDV proteins in liver samples from humans, chimpanzees or woodchucks.

Demonstration of a transient rheumatoid factor in the acute phase of hepatitis non A, non B.

The evaluation of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test designed to detect antigens of hepatitis non A, non B (HNANB) revealed that a rheumatoid factor (RF)-like reaction was interfering. This RF-like reaction was not detectable by routine screening methods for RF, such as latex agglutination or the Waaler Rose test. Testing of sequential sera of chimpanzees with acute HNANB showed that this RF-like reaction was present in the acute phase of HNANB simultaneously with alanine aminotransferase (ALT) elevations. Characterization of this RF-like reaction revealed the presence of an IgM antibody against human IgG that banded in CsCl at 1.3 g/ml and at 19S in sucrose gradients. Absorption with IgG-coated latex particles and anti-human IgM gave further evidence of an RF. By testing sera of patients with different forms of acute viral hepatitis, it was demonstrated that an RF-like factor was also present in seven sera from 9 patients with acute hepatitis A, in two sera from 11 patients with hepatitis B, and seven sera from 11 patients with acute HNANB. The rise of RF in the acute phase of hepatitis A may be an effect of polyclonal stimulation of IgM producing B lymphocytes. The high prevalence of RF in HNANB remains unclear as no polyclonal stimulation of IgM has been observed.

Q-T prolongation and torsades de pointes in a patient with subarachnoid hemorrhage.

An extreme Q-T prolongation in a patient with subarachnoid hemorrhage was observed. Multiple torsades de pointes occurred. Lidocaine, metoprolol, and atropine were not effective in controlling the arrhythmia, whereas shortening the Q-T interval by intravenous administration of orciprenaline or overdrive ventricular pacing was successful. The occurrence of T wave alternations was a sign of increased sympathetic activity.
