'Respiratory epilepsy'--does it exist?

Past literature suggests a possible relationship between two recurrent illnesses: bronchial asthma and epilepsy. Only one preliminary study, performed 30 years ago, demonstrated epileptiform EEG activity in patients with bronchial asthma who were treated successfully for their asthma with antiepileptic drugs. We demonstrated epileptiform activity in six out of 24 (25%) children with bronchial asthma who had no history of neurological illnesses or epilepsy, compared to one out of 24 (4.2%) children in the control group. This relatively high percentage of EEG abnormalities raises the possibility that there is a subgroup of patients with bronchial asthma, in whom the asthma might be considered as an 'epileptic equivalent'. These patients possibly deserve a different, unique therapeutic approach.

Comparative experimental study on the use of the carbon dioxide laser beam in partial nephrectomy.

A report is given on an experimental study in 20 dogs designed to compare the use of the CO2 laser beam as a cutting instrument in resection of the kidney parenchyma, with the simple scalpel and the cutting diathermy current. It was found that the laser can be used with impunity. It shortens the time of operation by facilitating hemostasis, diminishes blood loss, and does not interfere with the final kidney function. The damage to the kidney parenchyma compares favorably with the produced by the other instruments.

The clinical use of CO2 laser beam in the surgery of kidney parenchyma.

Encouraged by the experimental work done on 40 kidneys in 20 dogs using the CO2 laser beam for partial nephrectomies, we decided to use the laser in four patients. Three of them underwent lower partial nephrectomy, and the fourth underwent bivalving of kidney through the anatrophic line. The use of this new instrument was very helpful in reducing blood loss, shortening the time of hemostasis, and minimizing parenchymal damage. Case No. 1 is the first published case of xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis that underwent partial nephrectomy with success.

Correlation of selective angiography and pathology in cavernous hemangioma of the kidney.

Angiographic and pathologic findings are presented and correlated in a case of renal cavernous hemangioma, and considered in relation to 3 other cases published previously. A normal angiogram does not exclude a cavernous hemangioma. Those tumors with a large arterial component may be demonstrated in the arterial phase of the angiogram. A discrete tumor may show an area of hypovascularity by displacing normal renal tissue but a diffuse cavernous hemangioma is likely to yield a normal angiogram.
