Preliminary research on possibility of bronchial asthma treatment with hyperbaric oxygenation.

The total of the persons examined was divided into 3 groups. There were 11 men and 5 women with various diseases diagnosed in Group I, 5 healthy men in Group II and 9 man and 2 women with allergy in Group III, the control group. The subjects were treated with hyperbaric oxygenation exposures from 1.8 to 2.5 ata O2 within a 60-90 minute period. The number of exposures ranged from 1-4 for Group II till 10-15 for Group I and Group III. In all the cases the following examinations were carried out: hematological tests (Hb, Ht, erythrocytes, leucocytes, and blood platelets counts, blood picture), immunological tests (IgG, IgM, IgA, IgD, IgE, C3 fraction of complement and hematolytical activity of complement--CH50) and all required additional clinical tests. These examinations were made before the series of hyperbaric exposures, after 4 exposures, after their completion and a month later. Full documentation in Group I was obtained in 6 cases and in the 10 remaining only before the exposures and after their completion. In Group II full documentation was available only in 1 person, but before the exposures and after their completion in the rest, and finally, in Group III full documentation was obtained in 7 persons, but before the exposures and after their completion in 4 others. Generally, it was in allergic states that a positive therapeutic effect of hyperbaric oxygenation was found. It had already been corroborated by the respective shifts of immunological coefficients, noted by other authors too. The above observations need to be confirmed in a wider material, in different periods of the disease and with other additional examinations employed.

[Alveolaro-capillary gas exchange. Considerations on the evaluation of carbon monoxide diffusion].

This study is based on 107 male individuals aged between 20 and 73 years, all of them exempt from any disease. They were submitted to instrument examination for measuring the CO pulmonary diffusing capacity with the single breath method. The data so obtained were then statistically elaborated considering the index value of CO transfer, the Helium partition (RHe) and the CO partition and diffusion (R&DCO). The CO transfer index has shown a particularly extensive range; if we take as normality level-20%, a consistent ratio of individuals (20,56%) falls in a range of deficitary pulmonary diffusion though in absence of aèny clinical evidence of pathology. The subsequent statistical elaboration of the data after logarithmic transformation, by the means of the linear regression model, has allowed to reduce the variance of the R&D CO index improving his classificative capability.

[40 cases of multiple sclerosis treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy].

40 patients affected by Multiple Sclerosis, all in a worsening phase, have been treated with cicles of HBO since 1979. The therapy consists of a first cycle of dayly treatment (5 in a week) for a total of 10-15 sessions (90' at 2 ATA) and subsequently, according to the case, 3-5 sessions every 1-2 months, or 1 monthly treatment. Six cases did not showed improvements; among these, 4 have received adequate treatment, but in 5 cases the clinical picture do not worsen. The resting 34 cases (85%) had remarkable improvements, complete or near total recovery of one or more symptoms after the first cycle or the following treatments. Improvements or recovery of symptoms can be temporary or permanent along the period of observation (from 3 to 33 months). In 8 subjects the improvement were progressive after successive cycles. Cerebellar, sensorial, and sphincterial symptoms are the most susceptible of positive changes. Walking improvements, hand use normalisation and a better bladder control have allowed many patients a very satisfactory recovery of autonomy.
