In nine patients with hemolytic-uremic syndrome, the plasma activity and plasma concentrations of antithrombin III were determined on admission to the hospital and during the clinical course of the disease. Hemodialysis was necessary in six of the patients. In seven children the plasma AT III activity was moderately to markedly below the lower limit of normal at 75%, and did not rise after plasmapheresis with fresh frozen plasma. Replacement therapy with AT III concentrate was started in these patients. During the first 2 days an average dose of AT III concentrate of 2.1 U/kg in 24 h was necessary to raise plasma AT III activity by 1%. No side effects were observed. An already pre-existing procoagulant status and the administration of heparin may lead to AT III deficiency in hemolytic-uremic syndrome.
The Pediatric Early Elementary Examination (PEEX) is a neurodevelopmental assessment designed to evaluate children with learning problems between the ages of 7 and 9. The current study of this procedure focused on a sample of youngsters from two middle-class communities and a group of children referred for learning problems to the School Function Program, a specialty clinic at The Children's Hospital in Boston. During prior pilot testing, diagnostic criteria had been established for specific areas of development assessed on the Pediatric Early Elementary Examination. Findings were expressed as "areas of concern" or developmental weaknesses suggesting the need for further monitoring or referral. It was found that nearly half of the children in the community had at least one such finding. These areas of concern were spread fairly evenly over the seven developmental areas of concern correlated with results of the revised Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-R) and the California Achievement Test in the community. Youngsters referred to the School Function Program with learning problems also were more likely to have multiple areas of developmental concern. Results suggest that the Pediatric Early Elementary Examination shows promise as a reliable and valid system of observation for use by health care professionals.
Within a population of children referred for school-related problems, youngsters with significant attention deficits were compared with children having other types of learning problems. Using data from parent and teacher questionnaires as well as results of multidisciplinary team assessments, each patient was assigned either to a group with significant attention deficits or to one with learning problems, but fewer, if any, problems with attention. Disagreement between observation sources was demonstrated. Children qualifying for the significant attention deficit group were characterized by a greater likelihood of having behavioral problems during the toddler and preschool years. They also had a higher prevalence of minor neurologic signs and difficulty on tests of language development. Their current behavioral and adjustment problems seemed to be more severe and widespread than those of the youngsters with whom they were compared. No major intergroup differences were observed with regard to age at referral, socioeconomic status, family history of learning and behavior problems, perinatal health risks, or psychosocial difficulties. There was considerable historic and symptomatic overlap between the two groups, suggesting that the clinical picture characteristic of significant attention deficits is relatively nonspecific and is either a primary or secondary finding in a large proportion of a heterogeneous population of children experiencing difficulties in school.

22 patients with bioptically found severe fibrou inflammatory changes of the pancreas underwent an after examination in order to exclude endocrine disturbances of the pancreas. The biopsy of the pancreas was carried out during an operation of the bile-duct. A restriction of the glucose tolerance was to be proved the more frequently the more distinct were the histological changes of the pancreas and the older were the patients. Post-operative increases of the fasting blood sugar appeared above all transitorily and rarely led to a manifestation of diabetes. It is recommended to exclude an endocrine functional disturbance of the pancreas not only when a typical symptomatology of pancreatitis is present, but also when there are possibly clinically not expected bioptical findings of a severe fibrous inflammatory change of the pancreas.

A trial was performed in which 273 piglets received a liquid milk diet between the 12th and 30th day of age. This was compared with a liquid experimental diet, in which 60% of the milk was replaced by fish meal and wheat. Both diets were given as sole feed under practical feeding conditions. The experimental diet produced a weight increase of 81,9% relative to that of the milk diet; milk consumption was 53.7% the required amount of dry matter 117.4%, milk consumption per kg of weight gain 61.5% and expenditure on feed per kg of weight gain 78%. The general growth development of the piglets was quite good irrespective of the different rates of weight increase. The weight gains after 30 days were 6.6 kg+/-1.5 kg for the experimental diet and 7.0 kg+/-1.2 kg for the milk diet. Losses among the piglets amounted to 0.7% and 2.9%. On the basis of the results of the present trial and of previous experiments the authors believe that under practical conditions of feeding 50% of the milk contained in a liquid milk diet fed to piglets that are 12 to 30 days of age could be replaced by wheat and fish meal.
40 piglets were reared in separate cages from the 13th to the 28th day of age and received a liquid milk diet (controls) or a substituted liquid diet. Half of the protein requirements of the young pigs were covered from skim milk, the other half was supplied through fish meal, extracted soya bean meal or a combination of both meals. Whole wheat meal was used as source of substitution energy. The ration containing extracted soya bean meal reduced all the digestibility coefficients with the exception of NFE. As a result, the levels of energy and nutrient intake and the rates of weight increase were lower in the experimental groups receiving the soya bean meal diet than in the control group. The same performance level as with the control diet was achieved when 50% of the skim milk in the experimental diet were replaced by wheat and fish meal.
15 trials were carried out with 600 young pigs receiving a type of liquid skim milk diet from the 12th to the 28th day of age. 0% to 75% of the proportion of dietary milk were replaced by wheat and fish meal. The experimental rations used in the trial exhibited a high digestibility of crude nutrients. No transitional feeding period was necessary between the feeding of the milk diet and that of the substituted ration. Whole meal from crude wheat was found to be equivalent in quality to whole meal made from cooked wheat. A liquid feed in which about 50% of the dietary milk is replaced by wheat and fish meal is well suited for being fed to young pigs when these are between 13 and 28 days of age.

In the tumorous phase of TAA-induced cirrhosis of the liver comparative studies on the mitotic index, on the frequency of binucleated liver cells and on nuclear volume showed approximately similar values in the small pseudolobuli and in several hepatomas. Obviously "minimum deviation hepatomas" had developed. Decrease of ploidy characteristic for hepatomas was observed. In thioacetamide hepatomas the phenomenon of quadrupling of the cell nuclei due to dysfunctional nuclear edema occurred whereas the normal nuclei of liver cells can only double in volume in all phases of thioacetamide-intoxication. Particular karyometric aspects of the nuclear-nucleolar metabolism of hepatoma cells following thioacetamide intoxication are discussed.
A case of primary endogenous genitalactinomycosis with an IUD in situ is reported. 200 cases of actinomycosis of the female genital organs have so far been reported in literature. The mode of infection are discussed. In this case the ascension from the vagina and uterus are most probable. The treatement completely cured the patient.
